Preliminary evidence for performance enhancement following parietal lobe stimulation in Developmental Dyscalculia.

Nearly 7% of the population exhibit difficulties in dealing with numbers and performing arithmetic, a condition named Developmental Dyscalculia (DD), which significantly affects the educational and professional outcomes of these individuals, as it often persists into adulthood. Research has mainly focused on behavioral rehabilitation, while little is known about performance changes and neuroplasticity induced by the concurrent application of brain-behavioral approaches. It has been shown that numerical proficiency can be enhanced by applying a small-yet constant-current through the brain, a no

Impaired acuity of the approximate number system underlies mathematical learning disability (dyscalculia).

Many children have significant mathematical learning disabilities (MLD, or dyscalculia) despite adequate schooling. The current study hypothesizes that MLD partly results from a deficiency in the Approximate Number System (ANS) that supports nonverbal numerical representations across species and throughout development. In this study of 71 ninth graders, it is shown that students with MLD have significantly poorer ANS precision than students in all other mathematics achievement groups (low, typically, and high achieving), as measured by psychophysical assessments of ANS acuity (w) and of the ma

Operation-specific ERP dynamics of arithmetic processing in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is associated with persistent arithmetic difficulties, but the temporal dynamics of operation-specific arithmetic processing remain unclear. This study examined operation-locked event-related potentials (ERPs) during addition, subtraction, and multiplication in 76 children aged 8-12 years, including 37 children with DD and 39 typically developing (TD) controls. ERPs were time-locked to the onset of the second operand, when the complete arithmetic expression became available. Children with DD showed lower accuracy and longer reaction times across all operations. E

Severe developmental topographical disorientation associated with ADHD and dyscalculia: A case report.

We report the clinical case of AB, a right-handed 19-year-old woman who presents severe developmental topographical disorientation, a relatively rare syndrome, leading to difficulties in navigating in familiar (and novel) environments. This symptomatology appears without acquired cerebral damage (MRI described as normal) nor more global cognitive disability (high degree of education achieved). An extensive assessment of spatial cognition with different aspects of underlying cognitive processes is first presented. Second, the patient's preserved cognitive abilities and her major difficulties in

Functional and structural alterations of the intraparietal sulcus in a developmental dyscalculia of genetic origin.

Cognitive theories of numerical representation suggest that understanding of numerical quantities is driven by a magnitude representation associated with the intraparietal sulcus and possibly under genetic control. The aim of this study was to investigate, using fMRI and structural imaging, the interaction between the abnormal development of numerical representation in an X-linked condition, Turner syndrome (TS), and the development of the intraparietal sulcus. fMRI during exact and approximate calculation in TS showed an abnormal modulation of intraparietal activations as a function of number

Answer-locked ERP dynamics during arithmetic verification in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Children with developmental dyscalculia (DD) show persistent difficulties in arithmetic, yet the temporal characteristics of neural processing after the presentation of a proposed answer remain insufficiently understood. This study used an answer-locked event-related potential (ERP) design to examine neural dynamics during arithmetic verification in 76 children aged 8-12 years, including 37 children with DD and 39 typically developing (TD) children. Participants completed addition, subtraction, and multiplication verification problems while electroencephalography was recorded. Peak amplitude a

Ordinal processing differences between children with persistent dyscalculia and typically performing children.

Ordinal number processing skills are important for adults and children. Recent work demonstrates that children have difficulty with judging the ordinality of sequences that are in-order but do not match the typical count-list (i.e., in-order non-adjacent sequences, such as 2-4-6). Limited evidence in the literature suggests that dyscalculic children show a similar pattern of behavior. In the present study, we sought to explicitly test the hypothesis that children with developmental dyscalculia struggle primarily with extending notions of ordinality to sequences outside of the count-list. We te

Dyscalculia and dyslexia: Different behavioral, yet similar brain activity profiles during arithmetic.

Brain disorders are often investigated in isolation, but very different conclusions might be reached when studies directly contrast multiple disorders. Here, we illustrate this in the context of specific learning disorders, such as dyscalculia and dyslexia. While children with dyscalculia show deficits in arithmetic, children with dyslexia present with reading difficulties. Furthermore, the comorbidity between dyslexia and dyscalculia is surprisingly high. Different hypotheses have been proposed on the origin of these disorders (number processing deficits in dyscalculia, phonological deficits

Reduced 2D form coherence and 3D structure from motion sensitivity in developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a specific learning disability affecting the development of numerical and arithmetical skills. The origin of DD is typically attributed to the suboptimal functioning of key regions within the dorsal visual stream (parietal cortex) which support numerical cognition. While DD individuals are often impaired in visual numerosity perception, the extent to which they also show a wider range of visual dysfunctions is poorly documented. In the current study we measured sensitivity to global motion (translational and flow), 2D static form (Glass patterns) and 3D struct

Developmental Dyscalculia and Automatic Magnitudes Processing: Investigating Interference Effects between Area and Perimeter.

The relationship between numbers and other magnitudes has been extensively investigated in the scientific literature. Here, the objectives were to examine whether two continuous magnitudes, area and perimeter, are automatically processed and whether adults with developmental dyscalculia (DD) are deficient in their ability to automatically process one or both of these magnitudes. Fifty-seven students (30 with DD and 27 with typical development) performed a novel Stroop-like task requiring estimation of one aspect (area or perimeter) while ignoring the other. In order to track possible changes i

Impaired arithmetic facts but intact conceptual knowledge--a single-case study of dyscalculia.

We present the case of a young, highly educated patient who showed severe problems in basic arithmetic after a bone marrow transplant followed by extensive irradiation and chemotherapy. Despite his inability to resolve arithmetical fact problems (as 2 + 3), he showed intact processing of algebraic expressions and excellent understanding of complex arithmetic text problems. He perfectly knew arithmetic principles and applied them in various tasks. The performance of the patient suggests that conceptual knowledge (in addition to arithmetical fact knowledge and arithmetic procedures) is a functio

Symbolic and non-symbolic geometric abilities across development and in individuals with dyscalculia and dyslexia.

Geometry is fundamental to mathematical thinking, yet its foundations and difficulties in learning disorders remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the development of geometric abilities and their relationship with developmental dyscalculia and dyslexia. Seventy-nine children and adults, including individuals with and without learning difficulties, completed behavioral measures of non-symbolic geometry and a paper-and-pencil assessment of symbolic geometry. Geometric abilities continued to develop from early adolescence into young adulthood and non-symbolic geometry predicted symbolic

The nature of order processing deficits in developmental dyscalculia: The influences of familiarity and the count-list.

Children with developmental dyscalculia often show impaired performance on number order processing tasks. Recent findings suggest these deficits are not general in nature, but instead specific to certain kinds of sequences. In particular, one proposal is that dyscalculic children struggle specifically to understand that "in order" can refer to sequences outside of the (ascending-consecutive) count-list (e.g., 1-3-5 is in order). However, previous findings in support of this view were limited by (i) only considering ascending sequences and (ii) not accounting for other factors known to influenc

Probing the nature of deficits in the 'Approximate Number System' in children with persistent Developmental Dyscalculia.

In the present study we examined whether children with Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) exhibit a deficit in the so-called 'Approximate Number System' (ANS). To do so, we examined a group of elementary school children who demonstrated persistent low math achievement over 4 years and compared them to typically developing (TD), aged-matched controls. The integrity of the ANS was measured using the Panamath (www.panamath.org) non-symbolic numerical discrimination test. Children with DD demonstrated imprecise ANS acuity indexed by larger Weber fraction (w) compared to TD controls. Given recent findi

Are dyslexia and dyscalculia associated with Rolandic epilepsy? A short report on ten Italian patients.

Rolandic epilepsy (RE) is the most common childhood epilepsy syndrome with a good, long-term outcome. Nevertheless, some studies indicate that children with RE have more scholastic and neuropsychological problems than controls. The purpose of this study was to describe neuropsychological findings in a small group of Italian children with RE, focusing on dyslexia and dyscalculia. Possible correlations between these findings and the age-at-onset of seizures, duration of active epilepsy, frequency, type and localization of epileptic discharges were examined. Children affected by RE, aged nine to

Reduced cue-context modulation of Fz/Cz theta in children with developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) may involve difficulty using prior context during cognitive control. We tested whether children with DD showed reduced cue-context modulation of theta recorded at Fz and Cz. Single-trial electroencephalographic data were analyzed from 143 children aged 6-11 years, including 71 with DD and 72 typically developing (TD) children. The task was a Cue/Uncue Go/No-Go paradigm. The primary contrast compared S6 and S8, two no-response conditions with the same current stimulus category but different preceding cue contexts. To address the original montage asymmetry, all rev

Dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and left-right confusion from a left posterior peri-insular infarct.

The Gerstmann syndrome of dyscalculia, dysgraphia, left-right confusion, and finger agnosia is generally attributed to lesions near the angular gyrus of the dominant hemisphere. A 68-year-old right-handed woman presented with sudden difficulty completing a Sudoku grid and was found to have dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and left-right confusion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a focus of abnormal reduced diffusivity in the left posterior insula and temporoparietal operculum consistent with acute infarct. Gerstmann syndrome from an insular or peri-insular lesion has not been described in the

Mathematical skills in heritage bilingual children with and without developmental dyscalculia: A comparative study.

This study examined how basic numeracy skills relevant for identifying developmental dyscalculia (DD) differ between heritage bilingual (HB) children and monolingual peers, given the well-established links between language experience and numerical cognition. We compared sociolinguistic background, cognitive abilities, and mathematical performance in 311 primary school children, divided into four groups: HBs with a Specific Learning Disorder in mathematics (SLD-DD; n = 72), HBs with typical development (TD; n = 86), monolinguals with SLD-DD (n = 56), and monolinguals with TD (n = 97). Developmental dyscalculia: the progress of cognitive modeling in the field of numerical cognition deficits for children.

The study of dyscalculia requires an analysis of the current developed hypotheses which describe the cognitive mechanisms involved in this neurodevelopmental disorder. The objective of our review is to determine any progress in modeling developmental dyscalculia. The first hypothesis suggests that dyscalculia is the consequence of a specific deficit level number on the precise number system and the approximate system. Then, the second hypothesis states that developmental dyscalculia is linked to a failure to process non-symbolic representations of numbers. On the other hand, the third suggests
