Direct pharmacy access to hormonal contraception: California physician and advanced practice clinician views.

BACKGROUND: The United States has high rates of unintended pregnancy, and many women report difficulties in obtaining contraception. Pharmacy access would expand access to hormonal contraception. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative study using a structured interview guide was conducted with 20 reproductive health practitioners including physicians and advanced practice clinicians in California in 2008-2009. RESULTS: Most respondents considered the current prescription-only model of access to hormonal contraception to be too restrictive. Some reported a preference for a pharmacy access model where wo

Community pharmacist-provided opioid intervention frequencies and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacists are well-positioned to engage in opioid-related harm reduction activities (i.e., opioid interventions). However, several barriers to providing these interventions have been identified. Comparing the frequencies of opioid interventions and identifying which barriers are perceived to have the highest impact in providing interventions will yield valuable information for increasing opioid use disorder (OUD) care access within pharmacies. OBJECTIVES: To (1) characterize the frequency of 9 opioid interventions in community practice settings and (2) assess community

Pharmacists' perspectives on MedSMA℞T: A serious game to educate youth about opioid safety.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent opioid misuse has been recognized as a dire public health issue. Despite efforts to address the opioid epidemic in the United States, opioid-related morbidity and mortality have continued to rise. Few interventions have been tailored to prevent adolescent opioid misuse. MedSMA℞T: Adventures in PharmaCity (MedSMA℞T), is a serious game that educates the end-user by challenging them to make applicable decisions in a low-stakes environment. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to characterize pharmacists' perspectives on using MedSMA℞T to educate adolescents and families about opioid

Knowledge, attitude and practice of pharmacists and health-care workers regarding oral contraceptives correct usage, side-effects and contraindications.

Despite the success of the Iranian family planning programme, the number of unwanted pregnancies remains high. To investigate whether health workers in Tabriz are providing correct information and counselling about OCP use, the current study was planned to examine the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of OCP providers. A sample of 150 health-care workers in health houses and 150 community/hospital pharmacists answered a questionnaire about knowledge of correct use of OCP, side-effects, contraindications, danger signs/symptoms and non-contraceptive benefits, and whether they counselled

The Pharmacist's Paradox: Burnout, Financial Optionality and Career Sustainability.

Burnout, workforce dissatisfaction, and concerns regarding career sustainability continue to affect the pharmacy profession. At the same time, pharmacists' earnings exceed that of the average US employee, creating a professional paradox in which high earning potential coexists with workforce and career sustainability challenges. Despite growing literature surrounding pharmacist wellbeing, limited attention has been given to how financial literacy, financial independence, and financial optionality may influence career decision-making and sustainability within pharmacy education and practice. [Alzheimer's disease and pharmacists in contact with the public].

All healthcare professionals are concerned by Alzheimer's disease, which in France will affect, in just a few years, over one million persons, mainly women. Pharmacists have shown particular interest, irrespective of their sector of activity. Here, we wanted to better define the role of colleagues who are constantly in contact with the public, i.e. in France in drug dispensaries and biology laboratories. Within the framework of the French pharmacy committee for health and social education, Cespharm, the Ethics and Communications working group of the 2008-2012 Alzheimer Disease Committee headed

Cost impact of different treatment regimens of brolucizumab in neovascular age-related macular degeneration: A budget impact analysis.

BACKGROUND: Brolucizumab is a new anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) approved for treating neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Multiple treatment regimens are available for treating nAMD. These regimens include manufacturer-recommended regimens, pro re nata (PRN) regimens, and treat-and-extend (T&E) regimens, which are based on clinical practice guidelines and data observed in the real-world clinical setting, classified as real-world evidence (RWE). Most budget impact models predict the financial consequences of adding a new drug to the formulary based on the

Beyond descriptive SWOT in pharmacy strategy: A quantitative framework for leaders, managers and educators from prioritization to strategic response.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis is widely used in pharmacy strategy because it is simple, familiar, and adaptable across practice, education, and management settings. However, descriptive SWOT often stops at factor identification, offering limited support for prioritization, stakeholder comparison, and strategic action in multi-stakeholder pharmacy contexts. This article develops a conceptual-methodological framework for advancing SWOT through quantification, stakeholder-sensitive comparison and strategic translation. An illustrative mixed-methods university-i

The 2024 Saudi Pharmacotherapy Didactic Curriculum Toolkit: A Modified Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Several pharmacy schools in Saudi Arabia (S.A.) refer to the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) pharmacotherapy toolkit in developing their pharmacotherapy curriculum. However, the ACCP toolkit does not specifically address the healthcare needs of the Saudi population. A tailored pharmacotherapy curriculum that offers graduates the essential competencies to better serve the nation's needs is warranted. This study aims to develop a population-centered didactic pharmacotherapy toolkit for the Saudi population to assist pharmacy schools in designing pharmacotherapy course co

[Knowledge regarding Proper Use Guidelines for Benzodiazepines].

Benzodiazepines (BZs) work by agonising gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-BZ-receptor complex and thereby produce sedation and anti-anxiety effects. BZs are commonly used in several clinical areas as hypnotics or anti-anxiety drugs. However, these drugs once supplied by medical institutions often lead to abuse and dependence. Thus it is important for institutions to supply and manage BZs properly. At Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital educational activities about proper use of BZs are performed by not only medical doctors but also pharmacists. We coordinate distribution of leaflets and run

Sterile syringe availability in Georgia pharmacies remained rare, despite policy change permitting sales.

BACKGROUND: Numerous states, including Georgia in April 2019, have advanced policies designed to increase availability of sterile syringes in pharmacies for people who inject drugs (PWID); however, the extent to which pharmacies are willing to sell syringes to PWID is unclear. We examine sterile syringes sales practices in Georgia pharmacies to PWID following a recent policy change and pharmacists' cited reasons for these practices. METHODS: We conducted a telephone survey from October 2020 through May 2021 of one pharmacist (staff or manager) per pharmacy in a sample of Georgia retail pharma
