Dual use of cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems during pregnancy and the risk of small for gestational age neonates.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of cigarette smoking and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use during pregnancy on small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: We used data from the 2016-2017 Arkansas Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, estimated the risk ratio (RR) for SGA for maternal prenatal cigarette smoking-only use, cigarette smoking, and ENDS use (i.e., dual use), with no prenatal tobacco use as referent, accounting for the complex survey design. We also explored these effects for women who stopped smoking cigarettes during pregnancy among

Exposure to Toxicologically Relevant Inorganic Elements and Nicotine Content Variability in Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) E-Liquids.

In recent years, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have gained prominence as alternatives to conventional cigarettes, raising concerns due to the increasing number of lung injury cases associated with their use. These devices rely on e-liquids composed primarily of propylene glycol, glycerin, flavorings, and nicotine, which are heated to produce inhalable aerosols. In this context, the present study aimed to quantify nicotine concentrations and assess the presence of toxicologically relevant inorganic elements in e-liquids to evaluate potential inhalation-related risks. Nicotine was

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use across the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive regimen: A proof-of-concept intensive longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Exogenous and endogenous ovarian hormones (e.g., estradiol, progesterone) may influence nicotine use. Prior research has focused on combustible cigarettes and yielded mixed results, which may be due to a lack of granular assessment of nicotine use across the menstrual cycle or oral contraceptive (OC) regimen. We conducted a small proof-of-concept study on Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS). Our goals were to examine the utility of intensive longitudinal methods to assess ENDS use in a ~month long protocol, and explore ENDS use levels and variability among naturally cycli

"I Get the Flavors and It Makes Me Love Vaping More": How and Why Youth Users Modify Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems.

INTRODUCTION: Youth in the United States are using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) at a high rate. Modifications to ENDS by youth can introduce additional health hazards which have not been previously considered. To better understand these risks, we need more information on what these modifications are, the motivations behind them, and the sources of information on modifications. AIMS AND METHODS: Utilizing a trained moderator, in 2020-2021, we conducted one-on-one interviews with 19 youth ENDS users aged 16-17 living in the United States and analyzed their responses using a quali

An association between electronic nicotine delivery systems use and a history of stroke using the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are growing in use and many of the health implications with these devices remain unknown. This study aims to assess, using a survey representative of the USA general population, if an association exists between a history of ENDS use and a history of stroke. This cross-sectional study was a secondary data analysis using the 2016 behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey. The main exposure variable of the study was a self-reported history of ENDS use. The main outcome was a self-reported history of stroke. Covariates included sex, race, traditio

Use of and perceptions about electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) among people with mental health conditions or serious psychological distress, 2018.

BACKGROUND: People with mental health conditions (MHC) experience health disparities related to combustible tobacco use, and recent studies suggest disproportionately high use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS, e.g., e-cigarettes) among adults with MHC. Continued surveillance of ENDS use by MHC status is needed, as well as in-depth examinations of why adults with versus without MHC are using ENDS. METHODS: Using 2018 U.S. nationally representative data (N = 5878), this study examined associations between MHC and serious psychological distress (SPD) with ENDS use. Among current END

Regulatory, excise tax, and institutional governance of electronic nicotine delivery systems in low- and middle-income countries: A comparative policy analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a major global cause of preventable mortality, with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have entered these markets rapidly, but governance frameworks remain fragmented, unstable, and poorly compared across LMIC settings. This study examined variation in the regulatory, excise tax, and institutional governance of ENDS across eleven LMICs and identified the structural patterns underlying that variation. METHODS: We conducted a structured comparative policy analysis of Bangladesh, Brazi

Tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery system, nicotine replacement therapy, and cannabinoid use during pregnancy: A descriptive cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is associated with adverse health outcomes for both pregnant women and their offspring. Smoking cessation counseling is an effective method to help women quit smoking. Developing a targeted smoking cessation intervention could benefit those who struggle to quit tobacco and potentially reduce the harm due to any co-occurring tobacco use. Assessing the prevalence of tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and cannabinoid use in pregnancy is key to developing such interventions. Thus, we aimed to assess the prevalence

General and Specific Risk and Protective Factors for Cigarette and Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS) Use.

Electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS or e-cigarette) use is at least as common as cigarette use among today's young adults. However, most prevention approaches are based on risk and protective factors (RPFs) that were identified with respect to cigarette use alone. To the extent that RPFs differ for cigarette and ENDS use, tailored approaches are needed to reduce the burden of nicotine use. In the current study, we examined both shared general RPFs and substance-specific RPFs across a developmental period spanning early adolescence to young adulthood, with the goal of identifying upstream

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems and Cardiovascular Health: A Narrative Review of E-Cigarettes, Heated Tobacco Products, and the Challenge of Disentangling Risk.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), encompassing e-cigarettes, pod devices, and heated tobacco products (HTPs), have attained considerable global prevalence in recent years. While the cardiovascular consequences of conventional tobacco smoking are well characterized, the corresponding risks associated with ENDS remain incompletely understood. This review synthesizes the available evidence across device categories, drawing upon prospective cohort studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acute physiological effects, and experimental mechanistic research. Current evidence does not

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems: An Updated Policy Statement From the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Combustible tobacco use has reached historic lows, demonstrating the importance of proven strategies to reduce smoking since publication of the 1964 Surgeon General's report. In contrast, the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), specifically e-cigarettes, has grown to alarming rates and threatens to hinder progress against tobacco use. A major concern is ENDS use by youth and adults who never previously used tobacco. While ENDS emit fewer carcinogens than combustible tobacco, preliminary evidence links ENDS use to DNA damage and inflammation, key steps in cancer development. Fur

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) dependence among Texas Young Adults, 2014-2019: Increasing trajectory after the 2017 surge in vape pod popularity.

INTRODUCTION: Use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) increased significantly after 2017. The increase is attributed to a surge in popularity of vape pods containing nicotine salts, which are high nicotine concentration ENDS that may heighten risk for dependence. However, little is known about changes in ENDS dependence before and after the 2017 surge. We examined the trajectory of ENDS dependence among young adults from 2014 to 2019. METHODS: Participants were 1700 18-25-year-olds (57.6 % female) from 24 Texas colleges who reported past 30-day ENDS use in at least one of eight stu

The Rodent Electronic Nicotine Delivery System: Apparatus for Voluntary Nose-Only E-Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of death globally and in the U.S. After decades of decline, driven by decreases in combusted tobacco use, nicotine product use has increased due to Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, also known as e-cigarettes or vapes. Preclinical models of nicotine self-administration can serve as important lodestars in the search for effective intervention and prevention tactics. Current variants of the task have substantial limitations, however. Therefore, we created the Rodent Electronic Nicotine Delivery System, a novel low-cost non-proprietary nose-only preclinical mo
