The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of a nurse practitioner in geriatrics, working in the emergency department of a tertiary referral hospital, to assess high-risk elderly patients comprehensively. A secondary aim was to explore patient characteristics associated with referral to community aged care services. Of 469 patients assessed by the nurse, 327 (70%) were admitted to the hospital. A comprehensive set of data was obtained for 334 (71%) patients. For 142 patients not admitted, 163 new referrals were made, mostly to the Aged Care Assessment Team. Those referred were m

INTRODUCTION: Nurses working in emergency departments during disaster situations (eg, mass casualty incidents) must cope with intense and often traumatic experiences while providing rapid, lifesaving care. This challenging environment requires significant physical, psychological, and emotional resilience and exposes nurses to a variety of influences while fulfilling their professional roles. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of resilience among emergency nurses in disaster contexts and the factors shaping their resilience, with the aim of informing strategies to support their

An oncological emergency may be the initial presentation of a cancer, a sign of cancer progression, or a complication of cancer treatment. The most frequently encountered paediatric oncological emergencies include neutropenic sepsis, hyperleukocytosis, brain tumours presenting with raised intracranial pressure, tumour lysis syndrome and superior mediastinal syndrome. These are all life-threatening conditions that require urgent recognition and management. Health professionals working in an emergency department (ED) are likely to be involved in managing these children. This article brings toget

BACKGROUND: It has been identified that ineffective nurse-patient communication in the emergency department can lead to frustration, mistrust and inadequate pain management. Therefore, it is important to recognise the potential barriers to effective communication, including nurse and patient-related factors.
AIM: To identify what emergency nurses perceive as barriers to nurse-patient communication, and if there is any difference in the perception of communication barriers between nurses' demographic subgroups.
METHOD: A total of 199 emergency nurses were recruited using convenience sampling,

BACKGROUND: the incidence of epistaxis has increased secondary to increased life expectancy and morbidities. This study sought to assess the knowledge, practice and opinion relating to adequacy of training of advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) and staff nurses (SNs) in the emergency department.
METHODS: a national survey was distributed over an 8-week period; this included a 3-point scoring system based on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Clinical Knowledge Summaries guidance on epistaxis management to assess overall performance.
RESULTS: analysis included 109 ANPs and

Physical violence against nurses has become an endemic problem affecting nurses in all settings. The purpose of this study was to describe acts of physical violence against emergency nurses perceived as stressful using a qualitative descriptive design with a national sample of emergency nurses. The guiding conceptual model for the study was the Ecological Occupational Health Model of Workplace Assault. Narrative accounts of physical violence were analyzed using a constant comparative analysis method. Key findings included risks related to employee, workplace, and aggressor factors, and descrip

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate emergency nurses' experiences and perceptions of violence from patients and visitors in US emergency departments (EDs).
BACKGROUND: The ED is a particularly vulnerable setting for workplace violence, and because of a lack of standardized measurement and reporting mechanisms for violence in healthcare settings, data are scarce.
METHODS: Registered nurse members (n = 3,465) of the Emergency Nurses Association participated in this cross-sectional study by completing a 69-item survey.
RESULTS: Approximately 25% of respondents reported ex

Emergency contraception refers to pregnancy prevention methods initiated after unprotected sexual intercourse. Research has shown that 75% of the 3.5 million unintended pregnancies that occur in the United States every year could be prevented through use of emergency contraception. Hormonal methods and postcoital insertion of intrauterine devices have been shown to be safe and effective. Nurses play an essential role in the distribution of emergency contraception as patient educators, advocates, and support persons.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of a modified emergency nursing pathway based on the shared decision-making model during alteplase thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke and provide a reference for establishing a nursing system in the emergency department. Eighty patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with alteplase thrombolysis in our hospital from October 2023 to August 2024 were selected as the study subjects. They were divided into a control group (receiving conventional emergency care) and an observation group (receiving the modified emergency nursing pathway based on the shar

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of emergency nursing methods on the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
METHODS: A total of 100 patients with AMI were divided into emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) group (group A, 50 cases) and non-emergency PCI control group (group B, 50 cases). The clinical outcome, average left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), angina pectoris, heart failure, and reperfusion arrhythmia after myocardial infarction were compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: The average hospitalization days of emergency PCI group were less than those of th

BACKGROUND: Emerging technologies (ET), including virtual, augmented, mixed, and extended reality alongside simulation-based tools, are increasingly available for undergraduate nursing education, yet their institutional and pedagogical integration remains uneven. Nursing faculty are central to this process, but their own experiences and perceptions of adopting ET have received limited empirical attention.
AIM: To explore nursing faculty's experiences and perceptions of integrating emerging technologies into undergraduate nursing education.
DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive study with a context

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine nursing students' and registered nurses' teamwork skills whilst managing simulated deteriorating patients.
BACKGROUND: Studies continue to show the lack of timely recognition of patient deterioration. Management of deteriorating patients can be influenced by education and experience.
DESIGN: Mixed methods study conducted in two universities and a rural hospital in Victoria, and one university in Queensland, Australia.
METHODS: Three simulation scenarios (chest pain, hypovolaemic shock and respiratory distress) were completed in teams of three by 97 nursing st

INTRODUCTION: Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. However, in 2025, the country experienced the highest number of cases reported in more than 2 decades. Furthermore, early 2026 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate a continued increase in case counts. Emergency nurses and emergency medical technicians frequently serve as the initial health care professionals who assess patients with fever and rashes. Prompt identification and swift isolation are essential to curtail measles transmission. This narrative literature review aims to provide prac
