The short-term results obtained with the Pearce tripod stitchless lens in 250 cases of senile and pre-senile cataract are discussed. In only 2 cases was a complication related to the implant observed, i.e. dislocation of the implant due to malpositioning.

BACKGROUND: The Arrow LionHeart LVD 2000 left ventricular assist device is the first fully implantable system designed for destination therapy. We report on 2 years of experience with this device, which we implanted for the first time in October 1999.

More than 30,000 firefighters are injured on the fireground each year. Literature suggests that injury often occurs when protective gear is not used properly. This study focused on providing power for implantable medical devices (IMDs) using a microbial fuel cell (MFC) implanted in human transverse colon. PURPOSE: To evaluate the power profile of multifocal contact lenses (CLs) using a new technology based on quantitative deflectometry.
METHODS: The Nimo TR1504 was used to analyze the power distribution of multifocal CLs. The CLs under study were: Air Optix Aqua Multifocal Low, Medium and High Addition and Focus Progressives. Three lenses of each model were considered.
RESULTS: All multifocal CLs showed a power profile characterized by a change toward more positive power values when aperture sizes become smaller. The near refractive addition of the lenses under study was +2.61 D, +1.44 D, +1.

A new multilayer-coated varied line-spaced grating, JS4000, was fabricated and tested for extending the upper limit of a grating X-ray spectrometer for electron microscopy. This grating was designed for 2-3.8 keV at a grazing incidence angle of 1.35°.
