Intravitreal cilium associated with retinal detachment 40 years following penetrating eye injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The presence of an intraocular cilium is very rare and the response of the eye to the cilium is variable. We present the case of a patient with a cilium found in the vitreous cavity during vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment 40 years following penetrating eye injury. To our knowledge, this is the longest reported presence of a cilium in the vitreous cavity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old Caucasian woman presented to the emergency department of our hospital complaining of sudden visual impairment and floaters of her right eye initiated 2 weeks earlier. Ophthalmic his

[Treatment of severe caustic injuries of the anterior segment of the eye with limbal stem cell transplantation, penetrating keratoplasty and amnionic membrane transplantation].

The concept of limbal stem cells (LSC) opened new possibilities for the treatment of severe caustic damage of the anterior segment. These possibilities include transplantation of LSC, perforating keratoplasty, possibly transplantation of the amniotic membrane. In three patients with severe caustic damage of the anterior segment of the eye the authors implemented transplantation of LSC, perforating keratoplasty and in one patient also transplantation of the amniotic membrane. Where only one eye was damaged LSC for transplantation were obtained from the sound eye (autotransplantation, in case of

Stick a Needle in My Eye: A Case Report of Penetrating Needlefish Injury Causing Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis and Carotid Cavernous Fistula.

While swimming in the ocean on vacation in Cuba, a previously healthy 17-year-old female was unexpectedly stabbed through her orbit and into her brain by a needlefish. This is a unique case of a penetrating injury causing orbital cellulitis, retro-orbital abscess, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and carotid cavernous fistula. After initial management at a local emergency department, she was transferred to a tertiary care trauma centre where she was treated by a team of emergency, neurosurgery, stroke neurology, ophthalmology, neuroradiology and infectious disease physicians. The patient faced

CD4+ T cell/CD8+ T cell ratio in the anterior chamber of the eye after penetrating injury and its comparison with normal aqueous samples.

We have recently reported that significantly more CD8+ T-cell activity is present in the aqueous humor compared to peripheral blood. The aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of the ocular trauma on the number of the T lymphocyte subsets in the aqueous humor. CD4+/CD8+ T-cell ratios in the aqueous and blood samples of 12 patients who suffered from traumatic iridocyclitis because of a corneal perforation were compared to those of patients with senile cataracts. We found a relatively higher CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio in the aqueous samples of traumatized patients than cataractous patie

Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography-guided 25G Microamount Trajectory Vitrectomy for the Treatment of Penetrating Ocular Injury Caused by a Foreign Body in the Right Eye: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time three-dimensional tomography optical imaging technology that uses near-infrared waves to take cross-sectional pictures of the retina and other tissues. A few studies have reported the use of intraoperative OCT navigation for the removal of foreign bodies from the eyeball during surgery. The objective is to present a single case with a small foreign body (not embedded in the retina) treated with intraoperative OCT guided 25G micro-amount trajectory vitrectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: The examination of a 25-year-old man, who suffered fro

The role of eye protection in work-related eye injuries.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: A recent survey of general hospitals by the Victorian Injury Surveillance System found that ocular trauma represented 15% of work-related injuries. As circumstances surrounding occupational eye injuries have been poorly documented previously, their associations to occupation, industry and work-safety practices, including safety eyewear use, need to be identified to develop appropriate preventive strategies for high-risk groups. DESIGN AND SETTING: From a prospective cross-sectional survey of all eye injuries treated at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, work-related

Ocular BB injuries.

Data from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission indicate that air-powered guns were responsible for 22,800 injuries treated in emergency rooms during 1981, of which 1255 were eye injuries. From 1970 to 1981, 32 patients have undergone surgical intervention at the Wilmer Eye Institute for airgun-related eye injuries. Of the 22 patients with penetrating injuries from the pellets, 19 eyes were enucleated; final vision in the three remaining eyes was worse than 5/200. Of seven patients with nonpenetrating injuries, six had final vision of 20/40 or better. All three patients with pen

Explosive eye injuries: characteristics, traumatic mechanisms, and prognostic factors for poor visual outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Explosions can produce blast waves, high-speed medium, thermal radiation, and chemical spatter, leading to complex and compound eye injuries. However, few studies have comprehensively investigated the clinical features of different eye injury types or possible risk factors for poor prognosis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all consecutive records of explosive eye injuries (1449 eyes in 1115 inpatients) in 14 tertiary referral hospitals in China over 12 years (between January 2008 and December 2019). Data on demographics, eye injury types, ocular findings, treatments, and fac

Eye injury in the Israeli Defense Force: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

BACKGROUND: The eye occupies 0.1% of the total body surface yet it accounts for 8-13% of battle injuries in modern warfare worldwide. Protective eyewear can prevent over 90% of these eye injuries in both military and civilian settings. This study presents an analysis of a military casualty database and describes the proportion and distribution of eye injuries among Israel Defense Force (IDF) Soldiers. METHODS: All trauma patients recorded in the IDF Trauma Registry (ITR) in whom ocular injury related to combat or to training was documented were reviewed. RESULTS: There were 129 patients with

An Unusual Transorbital Penetrating Injury by House-key (lock): A Case Report with a Small Review of Literature.

Penetrating injuries of the brain are quite uncommon, comprising approximately 0.4% of all head injuries. In our case, a four-year-old boy who fell forward on a house-key (lock) accidentally while playing with some other children sustained a left sided penetrating transorbital brain injury. After hospital admission, the patient had a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 15/15, no visual loss but restriction of upward gaze (left eye) and profuse bleeding from the wound site. Firstly, the metallic key was removed in emergency operation theatre and haemostasis secured. Next day we did a combined sur

Traumatic dislocation of the eye into the brain-a "harrowing" experience-a rare case report with literature review.

Traumatic dislocation of the eye into the cranial cavity is a rare phenomenon described in the literature. Trans-orbital penetrating brain injuries are significant injuries accounting for 0.4% of all head injuries. Agriculture farm-related injuries are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the rural population. Cranio-orbito-facial injuries can occur with farming vehicles, equipment, heavy machinery, and animals. Challenges in managing these trans-orbital penetrating brain injuries include hemorrhagic contusion, loss of vision, meningitis, abscess formation, CSF leak, encephalocele
