Anatomical and technical aspects of harvesting the auricle as a neurovascular facial subunit transplant in humans.

BACKGROUND: Auricular transplants from cadaveric sources may be a viable alternative for difficult auricular reconstruction once immunologic problems are largely solved. The authors report on the neurovascular anatomy and technical details of harvesting the auricle as a single facial subunit. METHODS: Nine auricles were studied in latex-injected (n = 5) and fresh cadaveric heads (n = 4). In latex-injected heads, dissection in the neck and auricular region and microdissection within the substance of the auricle were performed under loupe magnification. The arterial network was exposed and meas

Therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells transplantation on traumatic facial nerve paralysis in two horses.

Cell-based therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for treating peripheral nervous system (PNS) injuries across different species. However, there is a scarcity in the literature regarding the transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for treating PNS injuries in horses. This report aims to describe the therapeutic potential of equine MSC transplantation in two horses with chronic traumatic facial nerve paralysis. Both horses presented with lip ptosis and right deviation of the nostril and upper lip, being clinically diagnosed with left facial nerve paralysis. Due to the refractorine

Transplantation of Olfactory Stem Cells with Biodegradable Hydrogel Accelerates Facial Nerve Regeneration After Crush Injury.

Olfactory mucosa contains neural stem cells, called olfactory stem cells (OSCs), which produce trophic support required for promoting axonal regeneration after nerve injury. However, the local tissue environment can reduce the viability/function of transplanted cells when placed directly on the injury. Although gelatin hydrogels have been shown to aid cell survival during transplantation, such OSC-hydrogel combinations have not been extensively tested, particularly during recovery from facial nerve palsy. In this study, OSCs were isolated from the olfactory mucosae of newborn mice and were sho

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in an Infant with Immunodeficiency, Centromeric Instability, and Facial Anomaly Syndrome.

Immunodeficiency, centromeric instability, and facial anomaly (ICF) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive genetic condition with severe immunodeficiency, which leads to lethal infections if not recognized and treated in early childhood. Up-to-date treatment regimens consist of prophylactic and supportive treatment of the recurrent infections. Here, we report the case of a 1-year-old boy of Moroccan consanguineous parents, who was diagnosed at 4 months of age with ICF syndrome with a homozygous missense mutation in the DNMT3B gene. He was initially admitted to the hospital with recurrent pulmo

A functional periorbital subunit allograft: vascular, anatomic, and technical considerations for future subunit facial transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the face can result in the loss of critical specialized structures (the eyelids, lips, ears and nose). Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) allows the surgeon to replace exactly what has been lost. The success of the clinical face transplants suggests the possibility of transplanting specialized units of the face. In this study we explore the neurovascular anatomy and technical specifics for harvest of a functional composite eyelid subunit flap. METHODS: 12 fresh cadaver heads were studied, each yielding two flaps (N = 24). The facial (FA) and superficial tem

Reconstruction of Multiple Facial Nerve Branches Using Skeletal Muscle-Derived Multipotent Stem Cell Sheet-Pellet Transplantation.

Head and neck cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages, and surgical resection with wide margins is generally indicated, despite this treatment being associated with poor postoperative quality of life (QOL). We have previously reported on the therapeutic effects of skeletal muscle-derived multipotent stem cells (Sk-MSCs), which exert reconstitution capacity for muscle-nerve-blood vessel units. Recently, we further developed a 3D patch-transplantation system using Sk-MSC sheet-pellets. The aim of this study is the application of the 3D Sk-MSC transplantation system to the reconstitution of

[Recovery of facial nerve function using sural nerve transplantation after its injury in acoustic nerve surgery].

INTRODUCTION: Statoacoustic n. neurinoma is a benign, slow-growing and usually unilateral tumor. During its growth the tumor exerts pressure on the surrounding anatomic forms within the pontocerebellar angle: cranial nerves, pons, cerebellum. Therefore the first clinical symptoms are ear buzzing and deafness, vision disorders, occipital headache or walking difficulties. The diagnosis of such conditions must be precise, whereas CT (computerized tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are the methods of choice. Surgical tumor removal is the only therapy, but during surgery facial nerve
