Enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot analysis of excretory-secretory proteins of Fascioloides magna and Fasciola hepatica.

Fasciola hepatica is a parasite of cattle (Bos taurus), but not of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), while Fascioloides magna is a parasite of white-tailed deer which also infects cattle as dead-end host. Adult parasites were collected from naturally infected white-tailed deer or cattle. Excretory-secretory proteins (ESP) were obtained from each parasite. Protein banding patterns were analysed on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and probed using sera from experimentally infected deer of cattle using enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB, a

Ascaris spp. and Capillaria caudinflata infections in captive-bred crested ibis (Nipponia nippon) in China.

Crested ibis (Nipponia nippon), an endan gered native bird, was called the "precious stone" of oriental birds. N. nippon was considered a critically endangered species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and a first-class national protected animal in China. The Chinese government had exerted considerable effort to protect the N. nippon population. An effective approach to increase the number of these birds was captive breeding. However, several pathogens, including parasites, could jeopardize the health of this species. The present study used the fecal flotation method to determine prev

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for the diagnosis and treatment of biliary Fasciolopsis buski: A rare case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Fasciolopsis buski can cause fasciolopsiasis, which usually parasitizes the duodenum and jejunum in humans, the biliary tract is rarely reported. However, as most infections are asymptomatic or present with nonspecific symptoms, they are often not diagnosed or sometimes even misdiagnosed. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the rare case of a 59-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital with a history of recurrent and unexplained abdominal pain for ≈11 years and worsening symptoms for 5 days. DIAGNOSES: Following laboratory tests, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, endoscop

[Incidence and control of the American giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, in a population of wild ungulates in the Danubian wetlands east of Vienna].

Fascioloides magna, the giant liver fluke, is an introduced parasite imported to Europe with infected game which is endemic in the Austrian wetlands of the Danube from Vienna to the Slovakian border. Due to its pathogenicity (especially in roe deer) and its potential of transmission to domestic ruminants a project on the epidemiology and control of this parasite was carried out between 2000 and 2005. To assess distribution faecal droppings from red deer were collected in an area along the Danube and livers of red and roe deer shot or found dead were examined. Simultaneously, triclabendazole-med

An expanding population of the giant liver fluke (Fascioloides magna) in elk (Cervus canadensis) and other ungulates in Canada.

Giant liver fluke (Fascioloides magna) populations readily expand under suitable conditions. Although extirpated from the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the early 1960s, the fluke reappeared following natural spread through mountain passes from British Columbia. Herein, we assessed epizootiology of the fluke population two decades later. Between 1984 and 1991, 534 ungulates, including 381 elk (Cervus canadensis), 68 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus), 54 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and 31 moose (Alces alces) from adjacent areas of Alberta (AB) and Briti

Intestinal infestation with Fasciolopsis buski leading to acute kidney injury.

Fasciolopsis buski is the largest intestinal fluke infecting human beings. This trematode is endemic in certain parts of the country. Migration poses the risk of spread of the worm to other parts of the country. We report fasciolopsis buski in a migrant from Bihar working in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Acute kidney injury following intestinal obstruction occurred in this case which was never described before.

A Novel Clonorchis sinensis Mitogenome: Elucidating Multiregional Strain Phylogeny and Revising the Digenean Mitochondrial Genome Tree.

Clonorchis sinensis, a parasitic liver fluke, is the primary aetiological agent of clonorchiasis, a disease predominantly characterized by liver-related clinical manifestations. Currently, research on the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of local C. sinensis populations remains inadequate. Thus, in this study, we sequenced and annotated the mt genome of fish-borne C. sinensis (Cs-c2) from Changchun, Jilin Province, China, a strain not previously described. This mt genome is 14,136 bp in length and harbours 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), an

[Prevalence Of Intestinal Parasites In Korea].

A survey of intestinal parasites infection among Korean people has been carried out during July 1969 to December 1970. A total of 2,250 stool specimens (male 1,101, female 1,146) was collected from all the provinces and Seoul city in Korea. The specimens were examined routinely by direct fecal smear, zinc sulfate flotation and formalin-ether sedimentation techniques. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Of 2,250 specimens examined, l,803(80.l %) were positive for intestinal parasites. 2. The positive rates of intestinal helminths were 1,644(73.1 %) among 2,250; Ascaris lumbricoides 46.0 %

Pulmonary embolization of immature Fascioloides magna causing fatal hemothorax confirmed by molecular technique in a heifer in the United States.

The current report describes the use of a molecular technique to identify immature Fascioloides magna An 18-month-old Brangus heifer was found dead in the field without any prior clinical signs. The cause of death was exsanguination into the thoracic cavity associated with pulmonary embolization and infection by immature Fascioloides magna resulting in 2 large foci of pulmonary necrosis and focal arteriolar and lung rupture. The liver had a few random migratory tracts with typical iron and porphyrin fluke exhaust, but no identified fluke larvae. A single immature fluke was found in the lungs,

Pharmacological and morphological characteristics of the muscular system of the giant liver fluke (Fascioloides magna - Bassi 1875).

Motility is required for feeding, reproduction and maintenance of the fluke in the host's liver. According to that, the neuromuscular system can be an attractive drugable target for chemotherapy. Musculature of the Fascioloides magna is organized into three layers, an outer circular layer, beneath this layer the longitudinal layer, and third, the oblique, or diagonal layer underlies the longitudinal layer. In our study, the administration of atropine or caffeine did not cause classic muscle contractions of F. magna muscle strips. However, the Electrical Field Stimulation (EFS) induced stable a

Food-borne trematodiases in Southeast Asia epidemiology, pathology, clinical manifestation and control.

The food-borne trematodiases are an important group of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Over 40 million people are infected with food-borne trematodes and 750 million (>10% of the world's population) are at risk of these NTDs. Here, we review the life cycles, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, pathology and pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention and control of the major food-borne trematodiases in Southeast Asia. We focus particularly on opisthorchiasis caused by Opisthorchis viverrini and clonorchiasis caused by Clonorchis sinensis, which people contract by ingestion of met

Fasciolosis, a foodborne zoonotic trematode infection in cattle in Bangladesh: multifaceted validation of parthenogenecity and anthelmintic efficacy.

Parthenogenic Fasciola (Trematoda: Fasciolidae) flukes have been developed by the hybridization of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. They are aspermic (asF) but capable of clonal expansion through parthenogenesis and are spreading rapidly throughout the globe. Here, we unambiguously prove the occurrence of parthenogenic Fasciola in cattle in Bangladesh, along with their ex vivo culture protocol and anthelmintic efficacy. By employing multiple conventional and molecular tools, we confirmed the presence of both the spermic F. gigantica (sFg) (31.7%; 814/2575) and asF (68.3%; 1761/2575) i

Molluscicidal activity of Solanum elaeagnifolium seeds against Galba truncatula intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica: Identification of β-solamarine.

CONTEXT: The persistence of fascioliasis in many developing countries urges the search for simple, cheap, and effective substances. In this view, plants provide interesting molluscicidal activities thanks to the secondary metabolites they produce. The genus Solanum is known for its potent effect on vector snails. OBJECTIVE: The molluscicidal activity of Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav. (Solanaceae) seeds against Galba truncatula Müll. (Lymnaeidae), intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica L. (Fasciolidae), was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Solanum elaeagnifolium seeds were powdered and successi

Fascioliasis and other plant-borne trematode zoonoses.

Fascioliasis and other food-borne trematodiases are included in the list of important helminthiases with a great impact on human development. Six plant-borne trematode species have been found to affect humans: Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica and Fasciolopsis buski (Fasciolidae), Gastrodiscoides hominis (Gastrodiscidae), Watsonius watsoni and Fischoederius elongatus (Paramphistomidae). Whereas F. hepatica and F. gigantica are hepatic, the other four species are intestinal parasites. The fasciolids and the gastrodiscid cause important zoonoses distributed throughout many countries, while W

Health Status and Drivers of Endoparasite Infection in a Low-Density Moose (Alces alces) Population.

At their southern range limits in North America, moose (Alces alces) experience increased overlap with white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and associated parasites through shared habitat use. Moose persist at low densities in New York state, USA, and are incidental hosts to multiple pathogenic endoparasites. Understanding the contributions of endoparasitism to moose morbidity and mortality requires investigation into their health status and drivers of parasite infection. We summarized health data from 60 live-captured and 191 opportunistically necropsied moose (spanning 2000-23) and use

Identity of Fasciola spp. in sheep in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: In Egypt, liver flukes, Fasciola spp. (Digenea: Fasciolidae), have a serious impact on the farming industry and public health. Both Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica are known to occur in cattle, providing the opportunity for genetic recombination. Little is known on the identity and genetic variability of Fasciola populations in sheep. METHODS: This study was performed to determine the prevalence of liver flukes in sheep in Menofia Province as a representative area of the delta region in Egypt, as measured by postmortem examination of slaughtered animals at three abattoirs

Molecular phylogeny and systematics of the Echinostomatoidea Looss, 1899 (Platyhelminthes: Digenea).

The Echinostomatoidea is a large, cosmopolitan group of digeneans currently including nine families and 105 genera, the vast majority parasitic, as adults, in birds with relatively few taxa parasitising mammals, reptiles and, exceptionally, fish. Despite the complex structure, diverse content and substantial species richness of the group, almost no attempt has been made to elucidate its phylogenetic relationships at the suprageneric level based on molecules due to the lack of data. Herein, we evaluate the consistency of the present morphology-based classification system of the Echinostomatoide

[Emergence in humans of fascioliasis (from Fasciola gigantica) and intestinal distomatosis (from Fasciolopsis buski) in Laos].

Distomatoses due to Fasciola spp. and Fasciolopsis buski are very common in the developing countries of Southeast Asia. The flukes in Laos have not yet been completely studied and described, however. In 2004, we began screening for these two distomatoses in the province of Savannakhet, in southern Laos. Our initial results showed that the causal agent of fascioliasis in humans and animals is Fasciola gigantica. The infestation rate of fascioliasis in cattle in slaughterhouses ranged from 17 to 57%, with higher percentages in buffalo (75-100%) than in cows (0-25%). In Laotian villages, the prev
