Ethylenediamminetetraacetatonickel(II) (EDTA-Ni(II)) has emerged as a significant soil and groundwater contaminant due to the increasing agricultural and industrial activities, posing environmental challenges. This study focuses on addressing the reactivity of green rust (GR), which can be hindered by oxidation with oxygen, limiting its effectiveness in remediation processes. To overcome this limitation and enhance the adsorptive capacities, the combination of sulfate green rust (SO4-GR) with various Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios with a high-surface-area adsorbent, MoS2, resulting in the formation of

The presence of ferrous minerals has been demonstrated to have a significant impact on the destiny, migration, and availability of uranyl (U(VI)) in natural surroundings. The iron oxide/Fe(II) system is a multifaceted iron reduction system anchored to surfaces, encompassing various forms of iron and ferrous ions. Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of adsorbed ferrous iron on iron-based minerals to facilitate the reduction of heavy metal ions and radioactive nuclides. A range of techniques for characterization, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Mössbauer spec

Lignin is a common soil organic matter that is present in soils, but its effect on the transformation of ferrihydrite (Fh) remains unclear. Organic matter is generally assumed to inhibit Fh transformation. However, lignin can reduce Fh to Fe(II), in which Fe(II)-catalyzed Fh transformation occurs. Herein, the effects of lignin on Fh transformation were investigated at 75°C as a function of the lignin/Fh mass ratio (0-0.2), pH (4-8) and aging time (0-96 hr). The results of Fh-lignin samples (mass ratios = 0.1) aged at different pH values showed that for Fh-lignin the time of Fh transformation i

Fe(II) has been extensively studied due to its importance as a reductant in biogeochemical processes and contaminant attenuation. Previous studies have shown that ligands can alter aqueous Fe(II) redox reactivity but their data interpretation is constrained by the use of probe compounds. Here, we employed mediated electrochemical oxidation (MEO) as an approach to directly quantify the extent of Fe(II) oxidation in the absence and presence of three model organic ligands (citrate, nitrilotriacetic acid, and ferrozine) across a range of potentials (EH) and pH, thereby manipulating oxidation over

The one-electron reduction of the nonheme iron(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [FeIII (OOH)(L5 2 )]2+ (L5 2 =N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine), carried out at -70 °C results in the release of dioxygen and in the formation of [FeII (OH)(L5 2 )]+ following a bimolecular process. This reaction can be performed either with cobaltocene as chemical reductant, or electrochemically. These experimental observations are consistent with the disproportionation of the hydroperoxo group in the putative FeII (OOH) intermediate generated upon reduction of the FeIII (OOH) starting complex. In this study, natural pyrite (NP) was used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for imidacloprid (IMD) degradation. NP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Effects of key reaction parameters (NP dosage, PDS concentration and initial pH) and co-existing ions on IMD degradation in the NP/PDS system were investigated. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests identified the existence of sulfate radical (SO4•-), hyd

The coordination polymer, (Zn(II)-CP, 1), {[Zn(2,6-NDC)(4-Cltpy)](H2O)4} (1) (2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid and 4-Cltpy = 4'-chloro-[2,2';6',2″]terpyridine) is structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement and other physicochemical studies (PXRD, FTIR, thermal analysis, microanalytical data). 4-Cltpy acts as end-capping ligand, and NDC2- is a carboxylato bridging motif to constitute ZnN3O2 distorted trigonal bipyramid core that propagates to construct 1D chain. The bacterium Comamonas terrigena strain HJ-2 has been reported as a nitrate-dependent iron-oxidizing bacterium, surprisingly with Fe(III) reduction ability. The control of iron redox cycling by the strain HJ-2 in the Fe(II)-Fe(III) co-existing system is mysterious and worthy of exploration. The present study demonstrates that HJ-2 utilizes nitrate as an electron acceptor to rapidly oxidize Fe(II), with negligible Fe(III) reduction, under neutral pH and anaerobic conditions in a co-existing Fe2+ and ferrihydrite system. Nitrate significantly influences the iron transformation mediated by HJ-2.

Mercury contamination is a global concern, and the degradation and detoxification of methylmercury have gained significant attention due to its neurotoxicity and biomagnification within the food chain. However, the currently known pathways of abiotic demethylation are limited to light-induced photodegradation process and little is known about light-independent abiotic demethylation of methylmercury. In this study, we reported a novel abiotic pathway for the degradation of methylmercury through the oxidation of both mineral structural iron(II) and surface-adsorbed iron(II) in the absence of lig

Structural Fe in clay minerals is an important, potentially renewable source of electron equivalents for contaminant reduction, yet our knowledge of how clay mineral Fe reduction pathways and Fe reduction extent affect clay mineral Fe(II) reactivity is limited. Here, we used a nitroaromatic compound (NAC) as a reactive probe molecule to assess the reactivity of chemically reduced (dithionite) and Fe(II)-reduced nontronite across a range of reduction extents. We observed biphasic transformation kinetics for all nontronite reduction extents of ≥5% Fe(II)/Fe(total) regardless of the reduction pat

Nanometric core@shell wüstite@ferrite (Fe1-x O@Fe3 O4 ) has been extensively studied because of the emergence of exchange bias phenomena. Since their actual implementation in modern technologies is hampered by the low temperature at which bias is operating, the critical issue to be solved is to obtain exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic@ferrimagnetic nanoparticles (NPs) with ordering temperature close to 300 K by replacing the divalent iron with other transition-metal ions. Here, the effect of the combined substitution of Fe(II) with Co(II) and Ni(II) on the crystal structure and magnetic pr

Fe(II) redox chemistry is a pivotal process of biogeochemical Fe cycle and the transformation of organic pollutants in subsurface aquifers, while its interfacial reactivity on iron oxides with varying surface chemistries remains largely unexplored. In this study, the redox processes of Fe(II) on two hematite with highly exposed {001} and {110} facets and their impacts on the transformation of nitrobenzene were investigated. Results suggest that Fe(II) adsorption is the rate-limiting step of the redox chain reactions, controlling the reduction potential (EH). Nitrobenzene activates the facet el

Tooeleite [FeIII6(AsIIIO3)4SO4(OH)4.4H2O] is an important As(III) host phase in diverse mining-impacted environments. Tooeleite has also received attention as a target phase for immobilizing As(III) in environmental and engineered settings. However, little is known regarding tooeleite's environmental stability, with no previous research examining the possible role of Fe(II) in inducing tooeleite transformation (as occurs for Fe(III) oxide minerals). We investigated shifts in solid-phase Fe and As speciation and associated As mobilization into the aqueous phase during exposure of tooeleite to a

Nitrene transfer reactions have emerged as one of the most powerful and versatile ways to insert an amine function to various kinds of hydrocarbon substrates. However, the mechanisms of nitrene generation have not been studied in depth albeit their formation is taken for granted in most cases without definitive evidence of their occurrence. In the present work, we compare the generation of tosylimido iron species and NTs transfer from FeII and FeIII precursors where the metal is embedded in a tetracarbene macrocycle. Catalytic nitrene transfer to reference substrates (thioanisole, styrene, eth

The Koopmans-based (KB) approximation is used to investigate the ionization potentials of ferrocene and dibenzene chromium in density functional theory. As to the energies of low-lying temporary anion states of these transition metal complexes, the stabilization method coupled with KB approximation (S-KB) is adopted. Here, the stabilization is accomplished by varying the exponents of appropriate diffuse functions. Results indicate that the S-KB method is much more successful than other methods in predicting absolute and relative energies of temporary anion states. Furthermore, the ionization p

The transformation of phosphate (P)-bearing ferrihydrite is critical for regulating iron (Fe) speciation and P availability in anaerobic soils and sediments. However, the effects of low P/Fe molar ratios (<0.1) on Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation and the associated fate of P remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigated the influence of varying P/Fe molar ratios (0-0.05) and P incorporation modes (adsorption vs coprecipitation) on the Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation of dispersed and aggregated ferrihydrite and evaluated the resulting redistribution and availability

Early-stage chlorosis due to iron deficiency is a critical limitation in direct-seeded rice (DSR) cultivation under aerobic and alkaline soil conditions, where iron bioavailability is severely restricted. This study presents a nano-engineered FeS-palygorskite composite (Fs-Pg) as a sustainable alternative to conventional ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), enabling prolonged ferrous ion availability under alkaline conditions. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimized a controlled release of 2.13 mg/kg iron over 29.6 days for Fs-Pg, maintaining higher ferrous ion content (0.43 mg/kg), in contrast to Fe

In this study, a novel material, iron sulfide modified by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (FeS-CMC), was successfully synthetized for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation to remove bisphenol A (BPA). Characterization results showed that FeS-CMC had more attachment sites for PDS activation due to its higher specific surface area. A stronger negative potential contributed to preventing nanoparticles from reuniting in the reaction and improving the interparticle electrostatic interactions of the materials. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) analysis of FeS-CMC suggested that the coordinati

Three chemicals-ferrous sulfate (FeSul), calcium oxide (CaO), and aluminum sulfate (alum)-were applied at different rates to stabilize P in fresh, anaerobically digested biosolids (FBS) obtained from an activated sewage treatment plant. A modified Hedley fractionation procedure was used to assess P forms in these sludge-borne materials and in a biosolids compost (BSC) prepared from the same FBS. Each biosolids material exhibited a unique pattern of P distribution among fractions. The most available P forms, namely: (i) water-soluble P (WSP); (ii) membrane-P; and (iii) NaHCO(3)-P, were stabiliz

Most of the chemical and physical interactions of interest to the astrobiology community are influenced by the mineralogy of the systems under consideration. Often, this mineralogy occurs in sediment or sediment-like aqueous microenvironments in which the early minerals differ dramatically from the mature version that results from a long diagenesis, which are tied to complex interactions of pH, redox state, concentration, and temperature. This interconnectedness is difficult to reproduce in a laboratory setting yet is essential to understanding how the physical and chemical demands of living s
