Relation of coxarthrosis to stresses and morphogenesis. A finite element analysis.

We calculated subchondral deformations and stresses in the femoral head and acetabulum during weight bearing using finite element models. Areas of high joint contact pressures on the femoral head were shown to correspond to high hydrostatic compression in subchondral bone. The magnitude of the subchondral bone compressive hydrostatic stress correlated with cartilage thickness and was highest in the superior femoral head and moderate at the acetabular roof. The seldom contacting surfaces of the medial-inferior and peripheral areas of the femoral head and the roof of the acetabulum had lower hyd

Mechanistic analysis of fracture-controlled canola dehulling via finite element modeling.

Canola is an important oilseed crop valued for its oil and protein, both of which reside primarily in the kernel. Dehulling separate the hull from the kernel and is important for improving product quality. This study aimed to engineer a controlled fracture-propagation pathway that maximizes hull removal while preserving kernel integrity. Canola was first hydrated and dried using a fluidized bed dryer (FBD) to tailor the mechanical properties, followed by mechanical loading using a roller machine that generated either compression-dominated or shear-dominated stresses. Finite element modeling an

Finite element analysis of asymmetrical retinal hemorrhages in shaken baby syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common association between bilateral retinal hemorrhage and shaken baby syndrome (SBS), unilateral retinal hemorrhage does not necessarily exclude this diagnosis. This study used computational simulations to elucidate the biomechanical phenomena within the eye under asymmetrical shaking forces. METHODS: Finite element analysis (FEA) incorporating the vitreous, vitreoretinal interface, retinal layers, and retinal vessels was performed under asymmetrical shaking conditions. To assess the stress-strain response at the preretinal, intraretinal, and subretinal locations, we

[Modeling and finite element analysis of human trabecular meshwork outflow pathways].

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with its primary risk factor arising from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) due to an imbalance between aqueous humor production and outflow. This study aims to establish quantitative correlations among IOP, iris mechanical properties, channel microstructures, and aqueous humor dynamics through three-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis, overcoming the limitations of conventional experimental techniques in studying aqueous flow within the trabecular meshwork (TM) outflow pathway. A three-dimensional fluid-structur

Finite element analysis of various fixation patterns in mandible bone fracture.

Mandibular fractures are among the most serious injuries to the maxillofacial region, with controversy surrounding their diagnosis, classification, and management Fixation mini-plate systems are commonly used for treatment of mandibular fractures. Previous studies have examined plate configurations with various locking systems. However, the impact of plate thickness on the performance of unlocking screw mechanisms has not been investigated in the literature. Also, there exist conflicting findings concerning the impact of the locking and unlocking screw mechanisms on the concentration of stress

Comparative analysis of orthopaedic scaffold fixation methods - a finite element study.

Purpose: Critical-size bone defects (CSBD) are a serious challenge in current orthopaedics. Natural healing processes are insufficient, leading to complications such as muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, impaired limb function and reduced quality of life. Currently used autologous or allogeneic bone grafts have disadvantages, such as long surgery time, secondary injuries and immunological reactions. A promising alternative in the treatment of CSBD is the use of a scaffold. The key element of the effective use of scaffolds is their proper anchoring in the bone defect. The article presents numeric

Finite element analysis on implant-supported bar with different geometric shapes.

BACKGROUND: The selection guideline for the implant-supported bar connectors (ISBC) of hybrid denture is lacking. This study investigated the maximum von Mises stress (vMS), stress distribution, and displacement of various geometric ISBC in mandibular hybrid dentures, as well as the maximum principal stress (σmax) in the acrylic resin part, through finite element analysis. METHODS: Four different geometric cross-sectional patterns for mandibular ISBC-L, Y, I, and Square-of equal volume, based on the "All-on-4" concept, were created. Titanium alloy was used for ISBC with an acrylic resin wrapa

A parametrical finite element analysis for functionally graded material overlay restoration.

The main cause of failure in bonded ceramic restorations is material fracture due to excessive stress concentration at the base of the prosthesis. The design of restorative functionally graded materials (FGM) could represent a major advance in dissipating mechanical stresses during occlusal contacts. The aim of this paper is to carry out a complete factorial design of finite element analyses to optimize a multilayer FGM introduced at the bottom of an overlay prosthesis. The number and thickness of layers vary within a spectrum compatible with ceramic shaping processes whereas Young's moduli va

Finite element analysis of stress allocation for designing different root canal.

It is known that vertical root fractures are influenced by the canal diameter. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the stress distribution in three distinct root canal taper designs using finite element analysis. We used a Hyflex Nickel Titanium (NiTi) rotary file to clean and shape a few lower incisor teeth with single canals. Three designs were developed, including a 4% tapered canal preparation, a 6% tapered canal preparation and an 8% tapered canal preparation. Every tooth sample underwent cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans and any stresses were found using finite element anal

Comparative finite element analysis of the first thoracic vertebra in artiodactyls.

Artiodactyls exhibit a striking diversity of the cervical vertebral column in terms of length and overall mobility. Using finite element analysis, this study explores the morphology at the cervico-thoracic boundary and its performance under loads in artiodactyls with different habitual neck postures and body sizes. The first thoracic vertebra of 36 species was loaded with (i) a compressive load on the vertebral body to model the weight of the head and neck exerted onto the trunk; and (ii) a tensile load at the spinous process to model the pull via the nuchal ligament. Additional focus was laid

Biomechanical behavior of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty: a finite element analysis.

Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) is a surgical procedure used to restore sight and manage corneal diseases by replacing cloudy corneal tissue with allogeneic normal corneal tissue or artificial corneal material. However, the limited availability and mechanical defects of artificial corneal materials pose challenges in DALK. To predicting postoperative mechanical behavior of Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK), a three-dimensional finite element model of the postoperative DALK cornea with suture holes was developed. The postoperative corneal displacement and von Mises (VM) stre

Finite element analysis of two skeletally anchored maxillary molar distalisation methods.

OBJECTIVE: To compare two methods of maxillary molar distalisation with skeletal anchorage using finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: Two digitised models were created: the miniscrew-anchored distaliser, which consisted of a distalisation method anchored in a buccal miniscrew between the first molar and second premolar (Model 1), and the miniscrew-anchored palatal appliance, which consisted of a distalisation method anchored in a miniscrew on the anterior region of the palate (Model 2). FEA was used to simulate both methods, assessing teeth displacements and stress concentration. RESULTS:

Material properties in regenerating axolotl limbs using inverse finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The extracellular mechanical environment plays an important role in the skeletal development process. Characterization of the material properties of regenerating tissues that recapitulate development, provides insights into the mechanical environment experienced by the cells and the maturation of the matrix. In this study, we estimated the viscoelastic material properties of regenerating forelimbs in the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) at three different regeneration stages: 27 days post-amputation (mid-late bud) and 41 days post-amputation (palette stage), and fully-grown time point

Biomechanics of calcaneus impacted by talus: a dynamic finite element analysis.

This paper aimed to investigate the biomechanical changes during the talus impact with the calcaneus at varying velocities. Various three-dimensional reconstruction software was utilized to construct a finite element model that consisted of the talus, calcaneus, and ligaments. The explicit dynamics method was used to explore the process of the talus impacting on the calcaneus. The velocity of impact was altered from 5 m/s to 10 m/s with a 1 m/s interval. Stress readings were collected from the posterior, intermediate, and anterior subtalar articular (PSA, ISA, ASA), calcaneocubic articular (CA

Finite Element Analysis of Normal and Dysplastic Hip Joints in Children.

From a surgical point of view, quantification cannot always be achieved in the developmental deformity in hip joints, but finite element analysis can be a helpful tool to compare normal joint architecture with a dysplastic counterpart. CT scans from the normal right hip of an 8-year-old boy and the dysplastic left hip of a 12-year-old girl were used to construct our geometric models. In a three-dimensional model construction, distinctions were made between the cortical bone, trabecular bone, cartilage, and contact nonlinearities of the hip joint. The mathematical model incorporated the conside

Finite element analysis of FGM dental crowns using phase-field approach.

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) - categorized in advanced composite materials - are specially designed to reduce the stresses and failure due to material mismatches. Advances in manufacturing techniques have brought FGMs into use in a variety of applications. However, the numerical analysis is still challenging due to the difficulties in simulations of non-homogeneous material domains of complex parts. Presenting a numerical procedure that both facilitates the implementation of material non-homogeneity in geometrically complex mediums, and increases the accuracy of the calculations using

Finite element analysis of esophageal atresia repair with biodegradable polymer sleeves.

Esophageal atresia, which occurs in 1 in every 4100 live births, is a potentially lethal congenital malformation resulting in discontinuity of the esophagus. Treatment requires approximating the disconnected esophageal segments and suturing the ends to restore continuity. Due to excessive anastomotic tension, leaks and strictures are prevalent in primary surgical repair of the esophagus especially in the subset of neonates presenting with long gap atresia (>3 cm between esophageal segments). Extracellular matrix derived scaffolds and biodegradable polymer scaffolds have been investigated in pr
