[Proposal for macroscopic examination of the heart , of the great vessels and of the lungs in forensic pathology].

Our work presents a kind of proceeding for the cardio-pulmonary dissection and forensic examination. As a result of the necessity to have right from the time of the autopsy more clear data regarding the cause of death, in order to be able to direct the judicial investigation towards a certain type of death, this proceeding presents, in our opinion, several important advantages--in comparison to the common examination method--such as the facility macroscopic diagnosis in some heart diseases: arrhythmogenic displasy of the right ventricle, mitral valve prolapse and other valvulopathies.

Computational modeling of blunt force trauma to the atlanto-occipital joint: Implications for Forensic Pathology.

BACKGROUND: The biomechanical response of the atlanto-occipital joint to blunt force trauma is an under-researched area in forensic pathology. This study investigates the joint's behavior under various impact scenarios using computational modeling, aiming to provide insights for enhancing postmortem examinations and injury analysis in forensic investigations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computational model of the atlanto-occipital joint was developed, incorporating ligament properties, muscle forces, and equations of motion. Simulations were performed under 3000N and 5000N forces at 45°, with or

Key findings in forensic pathology assessment of deaths following conducted energy weapon exposure - an overview.

Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs) or Conducted Energy Weapons (CEWs) are devices supplied to police and military forces worldwide, developed as a less-lethal option to disarm and immobilize individuals in dangerous situations. Their use in countries where they have been extensively adopted has reduced mortality during arrests by two-thirds and emergency medical interventions related to police actions by 80 %. Although adverse effects and complications from CEW application are very rare considering their widespread use, ocular, cranioencephalic, cutaneous, and pulmonary injuries have been reporte

Interrupted aortic arch with ventricular septal defect: an unsuspected fatal congenital anomaly in forensic pathology.

Interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is a relatively rare cardiovascular anomaly worldwide and is very rarely encountered in forensic pathology. A case of clinically unsuspected fatal IAA in a 5-day old neonate is described. A full term female baby was declared dead on arrival at an emergency hospital few hours after having been discharged from a maternity hospital following delivery. There were no noticeable signs and symptoms reported during the short postnatal period. Antenatal medical history was unremarkable and there were no abnormalities noticed at birth. Autopsy revealed an unsuspected IAA ar

Evaluation of sudden death in psychiatric patients with special reference to phenothiazine therapy: forensic pathology.

The investigation of sudden unexpected death in psychiatric patients and the ensuing litigation has brought to our attention many unusual features important in the evaluation of such deaths. Certain pathophysiologic mechanisms of death, rarely encountered in routine forensic science practice, may be important in determining the cause of death in psychiatric patients, especially in cases where the autopsy is unrevealing. Of particular concern is a tendency in the current literature to implicate phenothiazines as a cause of death when the death investigation and the autopsies are incomplete. Thu

Optimization of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) extraction from human cadavers: Advancing forensic pathology and postmortem analysis.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, colourless fluid found in the brain and spinal cord, playing a critical role in forensic pathology. However, peripheral blood is generally prioritized during autopsies, in certain circumstances, such as extensive injury or exsanguination, the blood collection is impossible. In this scenario, CSF becomes invaluable body fluid due to its stability and protected location within the skull and spinal canal and relatively unaffected in the early post-mortem phase. Although CSF extraction is well-known in living patients for diagnosing brain pathologies, however

AI-Assisted Diagnostic Evaluation of IHC in Forensic Pathology: A Comparative Study with Human Scoring.

Background/Objectives: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a critical diagnostic tool in forensic pathology, enabling molecular-level assessment of wound vitality, post-mortem interval, and cause of death. However, IHC interpretation is subject to variability due to its reliance on human expertise. This study investigates whether artificial intelligence (AI), specifically a generative model, can assist in the diagnostic evaluation of IHC slides and replicate expert-level scoring, thereby improving consistency and reproducibility. Methods: A total of 225 high-resolution IHC images were classified int

[A proposal of essentials for forensic pathological diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)].

There are many sudden unexpected infant death cases which are easily diagnosed as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) both with or without autopsy in Japan. A SIDS diagnosis may provide a cover for accidental or criminal death. SIDS should not be a convenient diagnostic box that shelters the cases of unexpected infant death which lack the necessary antemortem information to make the correct diagnosis. The authors consider that SIDS should be diagnosed according to the direction of the international definition of SIDS, and propose the following essentials for a forensic pathological diagnosis.

Sudden Gastrointestinal Deaths of a Child due to a Fecaloma: a Multilevel Forensic Pathological Approach.

BACKGROUND: Sudden gastrointestinal deaths refer to unexpected fatalities that occure due severe gastrointestinal conditions. They are rare, especially when compared to sudden deaths caused by cardiovascular, respiratory or neurological events. It is even more rare that a sudden death due to gastrointestinal causes occurs in a child. RESULTS: We presented a unique case of sudden death of a 9-year-old child with no pertinent medical history, presenting abdominal pain and diarrhea and deceased shortly after the onset of symptoms. The autopsy showed a severe intestinal obstruction due to a recto

The National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) Position Paper: Postmortem Genetic Testing in Forensic Pathology Cases.

Individuals who die suddenly and unexpectedly will often fall under the jurisdiction of a Medical Examiner or Coroner (MEC). Forensic pathologists may therefore be the first physicians to diagnose a genetic disease. Identifying these conditions at autopsy improves the accuracy of death certification and provides biological relatives the opportunity to seek diagnosis and intervention. Accessibility and diagnostic capabilities of postmortem genetic testing (PMGT) have rapidly expanded over the last decade since the previous National Association of Medical Examiners position paper on this topic.

Subject-specific finite element head models for skull fracture evaluation-a new tool in forensic pathology.

Post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) enables the creation of subject-specific 3D head models suitable for quantitative analysis such as finite element analysis (FEA). FEA of proposed traumatic events is an objective and repeatable numerical method for assessing whether an event could cause a skull fracture such as seen at autopsy. FEA of blunt force skull fracture in adults with subject-specific 3D models in forensic pathology remains uninvestigated. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of FEA for skull fracture analysis in routine forensic pathology. Five cases with blunt force skull

Diagnostic pitfalls in forensic pathology: Postmortem facial lesions mimicking trauma caused by pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis).

Misinterpretation of insect-related postmortem artifacts as traumatic injuries remains a critical diagnostic challenge in forensic pathology, particularly in enclosed indoor environments. We report a case involving a deceased adult male found indoors with multiple superficial perioral and facial lesions initially suspected to be perimortem trauma. However, based on photographic evaluation by a forensic entomologist, the lesions were identified as likely caused by postmortem activity of Monomorium pharaonis (pharaoh ants), a synanthropic species commonly found in human dwellings. Numerous ant e

Sudden aortic death-proposal for a comprehensive diagnostic approach in forensic and in clinical pathology practice.

BACKGROUNDS: Aortic rupture or dissection as immediate cause of sudden death is encountered in forensic and clinical autopsy practice. Despite a common denominator of 'sudden aortic death' (SAD), we expect that in both settings the diagnostic workup, being either primarily legal or primarily disease related, differs substantially, which may affect the eventual diagnoses. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed case records of deceased persons who fitted a diagnosis of SAD in the continuous autopsy cohorts in a forensic (Suisse) and a clinical setting (The Netherlands). Clinical characteristics,

The relationship between traumatic experiences, dissociation, and borderline personality pathology among male forensic patients and prisoners.

In the present study the relationship between traumatic experiences, dissociation, and borderline personality disorder pathology is examined in a group of 39 male forensic patients and 192 male prisoners. Sexual and emotional abuse are significantly more common among forensic patients than among prisoners. Patients also report a broader range of different kinds of traumas. Prisoners report significantly more dissociative symptoms. Analyses of the relationship of type of trauma on the one hand and dissociation and borderline personality pathology on the other show that sexual abuse is significa

Prevalence of alcohol-related pathologies at autopsy: Estonian Forensic Study of Alcohol and Premature Death.

AIMS: Alcohol can induce diverse serious pathologies, yet this complexity may be obscured when alcohol-related deaths are classified according to a single underlying cause. We sought to quantify this issue and its implications for analysing mortality data. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study included 554 men aged 25-54 in Estonia undergoing forensic autopsy in 2008-09. MEASUREMENTS: Potentially alcohol-related pathologies were identified following macroscopic and histological examination. Alcohol biomarkers levels were determined. For a subset (26%), drinking behaviour wa
