Although frequently relegated to the periphery in conversations about gender-based violence prevention, the disabling impacts of traumatised subjectivity both affect survivors' abilities to fully participate in sex and contribute to survivors being more than twice as likely to be sexually (re)victimised compared to peers without trauma histories. In this paper, we seek to crip and queer approaches to gender-based violence prevention, particularly consent education, by learning from 2SLGBTQ+ and disabled trauma survivors' affective experiences of queer, crip sexual joy and the radically messy w

Gender-based violence (GBV) perpetration is a severe problem among youths in schools and the community at large. As most studies focused on adults, this study aimed to investigate factors associated with GBV by male high school students in eastern Ethiopia. An institutional based cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,109 male students aged 15-24 years in eastern Ethiopia in December 2018 using self-administered WHO Multi-Country Study on Women's Health and Life Events and UN Multi-Country study on perpetration. Poisson regression model was used to determine the prevalence ratio. Multivar

The high prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) in armed conflict has been documented in various national contexts, but less is known about the complex pathways that constitute the relation between the two. Employing a community-based collaborative approach, we constructed a community-informed socioecological conceptual model from a feminist perspective, detailing how armed conflict relates to GBV in a conflict-affected rural community in Northeastern Uganda. The research questions were as follows: (1) How does the community conceptualize GBV? and (2) How does armed conflict relate to GBV?

This study explores the prevalence of different forms of domestic violence and their impact on women's reproductive health behavior in rural Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. Data were collected as a part of a large household survey carried out in 2009-2010. A multistage stratified systematic sampling design was used. A total of 4,223 married women aged 15 to 49 years and 2,274 husbands of these women were interviewed. Data were analyzed using bivariate and multivariate analyses. More than one third of married women in rural UP had experienced one or more forms of violence, such as verbal abuse, phys

OBJECTIVES: Although different types of gender-based violence (GBV) have been documented in disaster-affected populations, no studies have documented a quantitative increase in rates of GBV among populations living in protracted displacement after a disaster. We aimed to assess the change in rates of GBV after Hurricane Katrina among internally displaced people (IDPs) living in travel trailer parks in Mississippi.
METHODS: The study design included successive cross-sectional randomized surveys, conducted in 2006 and 2007, among IDPs in Mississippi using a structured questionnaire. We sampled

INTRODUCTION: Gender-based violence is a global problem, present in various spheres: economic, political, social, health-related, and cultural. According to official data, in 2021, there were 87,307 calls to the 016 helpline, 120,813 reports of gender-based violence, and 44 women were murdered due to gender-based violence in Spain. The prevalence and differences in the probability of experiencing gender-based violence in Spain show an unequal distribution between Spanish and migrant women, with the latter being in a more vulnerable situation. This study evaluates a community intervention strat

Mozambique introduced guidelines for integrated gender-based violence (GBV) services in 2012. In 2017, we trained providers on empathetic and supportive services to GBV survivors and introduced home-based services for survivors who are loss-to-follow up. Rate ratios of clinic visits were compared before and after intervention initiation, using exact significance tests. Data of 1,806 GBV survivors were reviewed, with a total of 2005 events. The median age was 23 years (IQR 17-30) and 89% were women. Among those reporting violence, 69% reported physical violence, 18% reported sexual violence (SV

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV), a human rights violation, disproportionately affects women and girls in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). School settings are important platforms for GBV prevention interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This paper employs realist synthesis to understand the mechanisms underlying how and why school-based interventions in LMICs generate GBV-related outcomes.
METHODS: Database searches yielded 6235 papers - 31 were included, describing 28 different interventions, mostly multilevel and mixed-sex interventions. Grounded theory was used to analyse important con

Despite established links between food insecurity and HIV outcomes, no studies have examined the role of food insecurity among female sex workers (FSW) in the United States (US). The aim of this exploratory study was to identify correlates (structural vulnerability and health factors) of severe food insecurity among street-based FSW in Baltimore, Maryland using multivariable logistic regression. In adjusted models, FSW with severe food insecurity were at greater odds of recent homelessness, physical intimate partner violence, client condom refusal, and HIV infection. Multi-sectoral approaches

BACKGROUND: Globally, transgender women experience widespread gender-based violence and human rights violations, detrimentally affecting their quality of life and access to health care. Increasing 'moral panic' against LGBTQIA+ communities in Indonesia in recent years has placed trans women at increased risk of violence.
AIMS: This qualitative study, designed as part of an academic-community collaboration, documented multi-level experiences of gender-based violence and resiliency practices among trans women in Indonesia.
METHODS: Between July-October 2023, 20 trans women and 24 healthcare wo

BACKGROUND: Children exposed to parental violence (CEPV) may experience a range of adverse outcomes compared to non-exposed peers yet may demonstrate resilience shaped by both internal and external protective factors.
OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally explore the profiles of protective factors in children across the continuum of resilience (i.e., low, moderate, high, and exceptional).
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Parent-reported data were collected on behalf of 211 CEPV (Mage = 10.11, SD = 2.21) residing across Canada.

In India, an estimated 41% of women report experiencing domestic violence in their lifetime and up to 28% report violence during pregnancy. Our study aims to understand local perceptions/attitudes towards GBV and lived experiences of GBVvictimisation and perpetration in marital relationships in rural Rajasthan. We conducted a focus group discussion with community health workers (n = 7) and interviews with young married men (n = 17) and women (n = 21), and local government officials (n = 2). The data was analysed using thematic analysis with triangulation conducted across methods and researcher

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly proposed to augment early-stage assistance for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (GBV), including intimate partner and domestic violence, across crisis hotlines, specialist services, digital reporting channels, legal support tools and healthcare pathways. However, the scope, maturity and evaluative strength of the peer-reviewed evidence remain uncertain. We aimed to map the application domains, evaluative maturity, and implementation and safety gaps of this evidence base.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review reported accor

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a reproductive health issue prevalent among persons in conflict and post-conflict situations, but is largely under-reported in Nigeria. Although GBV affects both sexes, the prevalence is higher in women as compared to men. The objective of this study was to assess the experiences of female internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria during conflict and post-conflict situations. The study was conducted among IDPs in Edo State, south-south region of Nigeria. Data were collected with a semi-structured questionnaire administered on 300 female IDPs. Descriptive and

BACKGROUND: We sought to estimate the prevalence and describe heterogeneity in experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) across subgroups of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).
METHODS: We used data from a cross-sectional bio-behavioural survey among 1299 AGYW aged 14-24 in Mombasa, Kenya in 2015. Respondents were recruited from hotspots associated with sex work, and self-selected into one of three subgroups: young women engaged in casual sex (YCS), young women engaged in transactional sex (YTS), and young women engaged in sex work (YSW). We compared overall and across subgroups: preval

Little is known about adolescent exposure to and factors associated with violence in Malawi. The aim of this research was to describe the prevalence of exposure to violence among adolescents in Malawi, and test the hypotheses that such exposures are associated with gender-based violent attitudes, and with internalizing and externalizing problems. In 2014, 561 primary school pupils were interviewed (50% girls), and logistic regression analysis was performed on gender-stratified data, adjusting for sociodemographic differences. Both girls and boys had witnessed domestic violence (28.5% & 29.6%),

Gender based violence (GBV) negatively impacts on women's reproductive health (R.H) and is contrary to human rights and RH statutory instruments. The study triangulates quantitative and qualitative research methods with women in the reproductive age group being the target group. The study noted that 95% of the respondents experienced physical violence, 31% rape by a stranger, 92% spousal rape and 65% forced marriages. Socio-cultural, religious, economic and policy implementation factors underlie a culture of silence that prevails among the victims of GBV. The study recommends economic empowerm

BACKGROUND: Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is extension of existing power dynamics and patriarchal systems that continue to oppress and marginalize women and girls. However, the mechanisms through which technology enables such violence and its effects on victims remain underexplored, particularly in the context of sub-Saharan Africa.
OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to examine how technology facilitates gender-based violence and to explore its impact on women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: This scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) met

BACKGROUND: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, concerns were raised about unintended effects of measures taken to prevent its spread, on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The United Nations called for understanding how national lockdowns put young people at risk of SGBV. This research is particularly needed in contexts such as South Africa, where pre-existing levels of SGBV are high and limited data has been released.
METHODS: This mixed-method longitudinal study characterised trajectories of household-level and partner-level SGBV exposure over 6 months, approximately 1 year after the i

Sexual- and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains a widespread public health crisis, with women in rural, remote, and northern communities across Canada disproportionately impacted. Despite well-documented barriers to accessing services in rural areas, there is limited national data on hospital-based care for SGBV-related injuries. This study utilizes the 2016 Canadian Community Health and Environment Cohort, hospital administrative records, and the Index of Remoteness to examine emergency room use (ERU) for SGBV across urban and rural regions between 2015 and 2021, including the period of the
