An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in a day-care center in Georgia.

Diarrhea among the 11 million children attending day-care centers in the United States is common, but infection control of enteric pathogens in the day-care center setting remains a challenge. In August 1989, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis was investigated at a day-care center in Georgia. A total of 49% (39/79) of children and 13% (3/23) of staff members who submitted stool specimens were found to be infected with Cryptosporidium. A total of 77% (30/39) of infected children had mild-to-moderate diarrhea (median duration, 5 days). Children were at highest risk if they were less than age 36 mo

Evidence of onchocerciasis in Georgia cattle: prevalence at slaughter.

In the study for an animal model of onchocerciasis, particularly one dependent on a Simulium vector, the prevalence of Onchocerca lienalis in Georgia cattle was assessed. In 7 collections of cervical and umbilical skin samples and nuchal ligaments made between April and December, 1975, adult parasites were found in fascia of the ligamentum nuchae of 62 of 124 animals (50.0%), and microfilariae were present in 1 or more of the skin samples from 85 to 124 cattle (68.6%). Infections occurred in cattle of all ages examined (from 2 to more than 10 years). Microfilariae were found more frequently an

Viral Storytelling: COVID-19 Comes to Albany, Georgia.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, when the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 spilled into the United States and spawned devastating outbreaks in Albany, Georgia, and multiple other cities, news media organizations served an important public health function. Journalists gathered and reported information about a new infectious disease peril, and they used increasing tolls of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths as a shorthand form of risk communication. However, there were ample reasons from the start to question the completeness, accuracy, and fairness of the information that local news sources provide

Racial disparities in COVID-19 deaths in Georgia.

The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has brought to the forefront racial disparities in health outcomes across the US, but there is limited formal analysis into factors associated with these disparities. In-depth examination of COVID-19 disparities has been challenging due to inconsistent case definition, isolation procedures, and incomplete racial and medical information. As of June 2020, over 14,000 (25%) confirmed COVID-19 cases in Georgia did not have racial information. However, nearly all COVID-19 deaths had racial and ethnic information for analysis. Using county-level informat

Evolutionary analysis of rabies virus isolates from Georgia.

Genetic relationships between rabies virus (RABV) isolates recovered from dogs, jackals, and cattle in Georgia and their closest relatives were investigated by comparing their nucleoprotein (N) gene sequences. Multiple isolates from dogs and cattle were found to share identical N gene sequences, indicating a risk of dog-to-cattle rabies transmission in Georgia. Exhibiting population-selective sweeps, expansion, and genetic recombination, evolutionary analysis of Georgian RABV isolates (all belonging to the cosmopolitan clade) and isolates from Russia, Turkey, and elsewhere provided further evi

Cost-effectiveness of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination in Georgia.

OBJECTIVE: Financial support from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) to introduce the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) into the routine childhood immunization schedule in Georgia is ending in 2015. As a result, the Interagency Coordination Committee (ICC) decided to carry out a cost-effectiveness analysis to gather additional evidence to advocate for an appropriate evidence-based decision after GAVI support is over. The study also aimed to strengthen national capacity to conduct cost-effectiveness studies, and to introduce economic evaluations into Georgia

Clinical specificities of Tinea capitis in Georgia population.

The aim of the study was to reveal peculiarities of the clinical symptoms and forms of Tinea capitis caused by etiological agents that are common in our country. The study was conducted on 176 ambulatory patients who approached the National Centre in 2009-2013. Inclusion criterion was simultaneous presence of clinical symptoms and positive result of microscopic study. For cultural examination was used Sabouraud's dextrose agar with the antibiotic chloramphenicol. Clinical manifestations were divided into inflammatory and non-inflammatory (i.e. slightly manifested inflammatory signs) lesions. 8

Ticks parasitizing humans in Georgia and South Carolina.

From 1990 through 1995, 913 ticks removed from 460 human patients in Georgia or South Carolina were identified and recorded. The majority of these specimens (758, 83.0%) were lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum. One hundred and four (11.4%) American dog ticks Dermacentor variabilis, 36 (3.9%) blacklegged ticks Ixodes scapularis, 9 (1.0%) Gulf coast ticks Amblyomma maculatum, and 6 (0.7%) brown dog ticks Rhipicephalus sanguineus were also recovered. All active stages (larvae, nymphs, and adults) of A. americanum were represented, whereas nymphs and adults of D. variabilis and I. scapularis an

RISK FACTORS OF CLEFT LIP AND PALATE IN GEORGIA.

A case-control study was conducted to reveal risk factors for cleft lip and palate. The main group consisted of 41mothers of infants with orofacial clefts (cleft lip and/or palate) who were born in Tbilisi maternity houses during 2015-2016. The control group was composed of 61 mothers who have given birth to healthy babies in the same maternity houses. Information on possible risk factors was collected using a special form. In order to evaluate a role of these risk factors, bivariate analysis was conducted at the first stage of the study. Odds ratio (OR) was calculated for each factor, signifi

Follow-up of the 1977 Georgia Outbreak of Toxoplasmosis.

In 1977, an outbreak of toxoplasmosis occurred among 37 persons associated with exposure to an indoor horse arena. Cat feces containing the organism were most likely stirred up when horses ran on the dirt floor, and were inhaled or ingested by riders and observers. After 25 or more years, we attempted to locate persons from the outbreak and offer them an eye examination. Of the 37 persons in the outbreak, 18 (49%) were located; four had died, and the remaining 14 agreed to an examination. Among the 14 persons examined, three (21%) were found to have lesions typical of toxoplasmic retinochoroid

Human infection with a zoonotic orthopoxvirus in the country of Georgia.

During 2013, cutaneous lesions developed in two men in the country of Georgia after they were exposed to ill cows. The men had never received vaccination against smallpox. Tests of lesion material with the use of a quantitative real-time polymerase-chain-reaction assay for non-variola virus orthopoxviruses were positive, and DNA sequence analysis implicated a novel orthopoxvirus species. During the ensuing epidemiologic investigation, no additional human cases were identified. However, serologic evidence of exposure to an orthopoxvirus was detected in cows in the patients' herd and in captured

Mental disorders of people with disability pension in Georgia.

Correct assessment due to mental diseases is rather important. WHO developed International Classification for Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and there are two approaches to its implementation - development of disease specific or generic core sets. In order to know which way to choose up to date information is needed on disorders that most frequently lead to disability in Georgia. The study aimed at identification of the most prevalent mental diseases that led to disability pension in Georgia in 2010. Cross-sectional study of the population of pension beneficiaries was conducted. We h

New data on epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis in Georgia.

Visceral leishmaniasis is spread as sporadic cases in eastern regions of Georgia. In Georgia as throughout the world steady increase of the disease incidence is observed. It is related to socio-economic crisis of population, increase in the number of invaded dogs and global warming processes. In west Georgia visceral leishmaniasis cases were never observed in the past. From 2004 to 2008 authors registered 10 local cases of visceral leishmaniasis in kutaisi (8 children and 2 adult patients). It should be noted that from these 10 patients eight resided in sapichkia area and two were from other a

Outbreak of amebiasis in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, 1998.

In 1998, we investigated a suspected outbreak of amebic liver abscesses caused by Entamoeba histolytica in the Republic of Georgia, using a case-control study. A questionnaire was administered and blood samples were obtained from cases and controls for serologic diagnosis. Medical records showed that E. histolytica infections were rarely diagnosed before 1998. However, from July through September 1998, 177 cases of suspected amebiasis were identified. Of 52 persons who had diagnosed liver abscesses, 37 (71%) were confirmed serologically to have antibodies against E. histolytica, compared with
