Identification and quantification of the sea spray effect on isotopic systems in α-cellulose (δ13C, δ18O), total sulfur (δ34S), and 87Sr/86Sr of European beach grass (Ammophila arenaria, L.) in a greenhouse experiment.

The sea spray effect can severely influence the isotopic signature of terrestrial individuals in coastal regions. To further specify this effect, beach grass was grown in a greenhouse under controlled environmental conditions and sprayed with mineral salt solution containing different mineral salts but only traces of NaCl (group 1). Another group of plants was sprayed with salty water from the Schlei inlet and the Baltic Sea, respectively (group 2). Control plants were only sprayed with tap water. Isotope analyses were conducted on the unwashed and washed plants (δ13Ccellulose, δ18Ocellulose,

Dietary inclusion of Pleurotus ostreatus spent mushroom substrate in corn silage-based diets: effects on rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and greenhouse gas emissions using a RUSITEC system.

This study evaluated the impact of incorporating Pleurotus ostreatus spent mushroom substrate (SMS) into corn silage-based diets on rumen fermentation, fiber digestibility, and biogas emissions using the Rumen Simulation Technique (RUSITEC). Given the need to reduce feed costs and mitigate environmentally harmful emissions from rumen fermentation, SMS was evaluated as a partial replacement for corn silage at inclusion levels of 10% (T1), 20% (T2), and 40% (T3). These three treatments were compared to a control diet consisting of 100% corn silage, to assess rumen fermentation characteristics, n

Contribution of lakes to global greenhouse gas emissions: Mechanisms, quantification and mitigation strategies.

Lakes cover only 1.8 % of Earth's land yet emit 0.35-0.55 Pg C yr-1 as CO2, 60-120 Tg CH4, and 60-150 Gg N2O, about 5 % of global fossil-fuel emissions. This review synthesizes recent advances in lake GHG mechanisms, measurement, and mitigation, and outlines key research directions. Net respiration generally exceeds primary production, maintaining CO2 supersaturation, while anaerobic methanogenesis dominates CH4 release; oxic pathways linked to methyl-phosphonate cleavage and cyanobacterial leakage add up to 28 % of CH4 in warm, P-limited, dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-rich waters. Roughly 60

Greenhouse gas sequestration in poultry farming: Strategies for sustainable production and environmental impact mitigation.

Intensive poultry production is a significant contributor to agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for roughly 8 % of the GHG emissions from 14.5 % of the global livestock sector. The main sources are feed production (often over half of total emissions), manure management, and on-farm energy use, which together releases substantial carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The consequences of climate change, including elevated temperatures and severe weather, threaten poultry health and productivity, emphasizing the necessity for mitigation efforts. This review integrates c

Plant-microbe alliances in greenhouse gas mitigation in terrestrial soils: a systematic review.

One of the challenges for climate-smart agriculture and ecosystem restoration is mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study evaluated how plant-microbe interactions mitigate GHG emissions in terrestrial soils and identified the biological mechanisms underpinning these effects. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. We retrieved 2,647 studies, and 24 met the inclusion criteria. We assessed study quality using predefined criteria and synthesized findings using a semi-quantita

Assessing the Policy Gaps for Achieving China's Carbon Neutrality Target.

The global commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions requires reform of existing policies, the formulation of new policies, and concrete policy implementation in every country. This paper provides an early effort to examine the overall readiness of China's 1+N climate policy package to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 and to explore policy gaps. We use a mixed methods approach, combining a comprehensive policy inventory, an expert survey, and a system dynamics model to analyze the adequacy of China's climate policies. Our findings reveal that China's 1+N policy package will

Development of a framework of carbon accounting and management on the township level in China.

The regional management on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential to the success of global carbon reduction. However, previous studies mostly focused on the city or country levels, while the management of GHG emissions on the township level has not been fully studied. This study proposed a framework of carbon management on the township level and developed a calculation tool for accounting GHG emissions. The case study of Lingshan Island, located in eastern China, was conducted through a site visit and interviews. A questionnaire survey was performed to collect data for carbon accounting.

Effects of Spatial Scale on Life Cycle Inventory Results.

Efforts to compile life cycle inventory (LCI) data at more geographically refined scales or resolutions are growing. However, it remains poorly understood as to how the choice of spatial scale may affect LCI results. Here, we examine this question using U.S. corn as a case study. We compile corn production data at two spatial scales, state and county, and compare how their LCI results may differ for state and national level analyses. For greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, estimates at the two scales are similar (<20% of difference) for most state-level analyses and are basically the same (<5%) fo

Revealing the unrecognized climate burden of aquaculture systems: A global insight into greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation strategies.

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing food production sectors and a significant yet underappreciated source of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Using the most comprehensive aquaculture greenhouse gas dataset to-date and robust modeling, we estimated that aquaculture systems globally emitted 63.90 (19.72 - 103.16) Tg CO2-equivalent per year, with methane being the main contributor. Although aquaculture systems account for <2% of the global lentic habitat area, they contribute 8.8% of the total CH4 emissions from these ecosystems. Per unit area, GHG emissions were lower in coastal systems than inlan

Comparative Greenhouse Gas Footprinting of Online versus Traditional Shopping for Fast-Moving Consumer Goods: A Stochastic Approach.

Variability in consumer practices and choices is typically not addressed in comparisons of environmental impacts of traditional shopping and e-commerce. Here, we developed a stochastic model to quantify the variability in the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprints of product distribution and purchase of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) via three prevalent retail channels in the United Kingdom (U.K.). We found that shopping via bricks and clicks (click and fulfillment via physical store delivery) most likely decreases the GHG footprints when substituting traditional shopping, while FMCGs purchased t

Sustainable dietary weight loss intervention and its effects on cardiometabolic parameters and greenhouse gas emissions: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial with overweight and obese adults in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

INTRODUCTION: The global obesity epidemic and its adverse health effects have reached sub-Saharan Africa. In some urban settings, like Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou, up to 43% of the adult population are overweight or obese. At the same time, modernised food systems are responsible for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions, 50% of land use and 70% of freshwater use. International guidelines on the treatment of overweight and obesity recommend dietary intervention programmes that promote reduced calorie intake and increased physical activity. So far, weight loss interventions rarely consi

[Applications of chamber method in measuring greenhouse gases flux in inland aquatic systems: A review].

Inland waters are important sources of greenhouse gases (GHG). The accurate quantification of fluxes is fundamental to assessing their roles in the global GHG cycle. The flux chamber method is the most widely used technique for measuring GHG fluxes in inland waters. Based on whether external air is introduced to maintain stable CO2 concentrations inside the chamber during measurements, flux chambers can be categorized into two types: closed path (non-steady-state) chamber and opened path (steady-state) chamber. We reviewed the basic principles, practical applications, and respective advantages

Multiple Global Change Stressors Boost Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions Worldwide.

Soil carbon greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are integral to climate security worldwide. Global change is known to impact soil GHG emissions; yet, the contribution of an increasing number of global change factors (GCFs) to the rates of carbon GHG emissions remains virtually unknown, challenging our capacity to forecast the trajectory of climate change. Here, we synthesize 1803 observations on soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes across 21 types of GCFs spanning a wide range of ecosystems (i.e., forests, grasslands, farmland, wetlands, tundras, and deserts) and found that an increasing number of GCFs will res

Human-induced N-P imbalances will aggravate GHG emissions from lakes and reservoirs under persisting eutrophication.

Lakes and reservoirs are hotspots for emissions of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) such as CO2, CH4, and N2O, and their nutrient levels and stoichiometric status are significant drivers of GHG emissions. In recent decades, human-induced unbalanced inputs of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have enhanced the P-limiting state of inland lake and reservoir systems. However, it remains unclear whether this state transition involves global changes in nutrient-limiting systems and GHG emissions from lakes and reservoirs. In this study, a comprehensive model was developed to examine the relationship b

Biochar application using recycled annual self straw reduces long-term greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields with economic benefits.

Paddy fields are major contributors to agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Applying ~1% biochar by topsoil weight (high single, HS) effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields, but long-term impacts are unclear. Here we present 8-year field experiments showing HS reduces CO2 equivalent per hectare by 59% and yields a net benefit of US$1,810 per hectare. However, its effectiveness declines over time due to the decreased soil carbon content and methanotrophic activity triggered by higher soil ammonium concentrations. To counteract this, the annual-low method, involving year

Should India Move toward Vehicle Electrification? Assessing Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas and Criteria Air Pollutant Emissions of Alternative and Conventional Fuel Vehicles in India.

We perform a state-specific life-cycle assessment of greenhouse gases (GHG) (CO2eq) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in India for representative passenger vehicles (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and buses) and technologies (internal combustion engine, battery electric, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles). We find that in most states, four-wheeler battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have higher GHG and SO2 emissions than other conventional or alternative vehicles. Electrification of those vehicle classes under present conditions would not lead to emission reduct

How sustainable agricultural management practices mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in paddy fields.

Agriculture is a major emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG), requiring mitigation through optimized sustainable practices. Although sustainable management practices show promise, especially for significant sources, such as rice paddies, their comparative effectiveness remains unclear due to a lack of multi-treatment experiments conducted under consistent conditions. To address this issue, we conducted a large-scale field study over four growing seasons (i.e. two years) in two rice paddies approximately 500 m apart. The study evaluated the impact of five management practices, halting fertilization

Biogenic carbon dioxide storage and mineral carbonation uptake in EU buildings.

Storing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in products is identified as one of the key measures for carbon dioxide removal. The building sector and its potential use as a carbon sink is quickly becoming a consideration for active policies in Europe. However, while this remains a key element of informed decision-making, robust data on CO2 storage and uptake potentials vis-à-vis current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the buildings sector is still lacking. Here, we quantify the carbon dioxide storage and uptake potentials for EU buildings in 2020 on three hierarchical levels: the material, build

30-Year Greenhouse Gas Changes in Megacities Driven by Emission Reduction Policies: A Case Study of Beijing.

This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban greenhouse gases amidst energy transition, aiming to assess the emission reduction effectiveness of Beijing's "coal-to-gas" and "coal-to-electricity" policies and to pinpoint the key sources arising from the subsequent structural shifts in the emission profile. We analyzed greenhouse gas concentrations from 1993 to 2024 using gas chromatography. Vertical profile data across the 8-240 m atmospheric layer from 2022 to 2024 were obtained using a pod-based measurement system installed on a 325-m meteorological tower. The results show tha
