Recent Advances in Understanding of the Etiopathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Management of Hair Loss Diseases.

Hair-loss diseases comprise heterogenous conditions with respective pathophysiology and clinicopathological characteristics. Major breakthroughs in hair follicle biology and immunology have led to the elucidation of etiopathogenesis of non-scarring alopecia (e.g., alopecia areata, AA) and cicatricial alopecia (e.g., lichen planopilaris, LPP). High-throughput genetic analyses revealed molecular mechanism underlying the disease susceptibility of hair loss conditions, such as androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Hair loss attracted public interest during the COVID-19 p

Association Between Hair Diseases and COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Stress: A Cross-Sectional Study Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological stress from the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic can potentially aggravate the course of several stress-sensitive skin and hair diseases. This study aimed to determine the potential association of COVID-19 stress with hair diseases, such as telogen effluvium (TE), alopecia areata (AA), and seborrheic dermatitis (SD), among medical students in Bangladesh. METHODS: This online-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 404 medical students of Bangladesh using a self-administered questionnaire, including sociodemographic information, status of

The role of the microbiome in scalp hair follicle biology and disease.

The skin surface microbiome and its role in skin diseases have received increasing attention over the past years. Beyond, there is evidence for a continuous exchange with the cutaneous immune system in healthy skin, where hair follicles (HFs) provide unique anatomical niches. Especially, scalp HFs form large tubular invaginations, which extend deeply into the skin and harbour a variety of microorganisms. The distinct immunology of HFs with enhanced immune cell trafficking in superficial compartments in juxtaposition to immune-privileged sites crucial for hair follicle cycling and regeneration

A Spatial Ecology Study of Keshan Disease and Hair Selenium.

Few spatial ecological studies on hair selenium (Se) and Keshan disease (KD) have been reported. To investigate the relationships of hair Se with KD and economic indicators and to visualize the evidence for KD precise prevention. An ecological study design was employed. The levels of hair Se of 636 adult men (≥ 18 years old) living in rural, general cities and developed cities in 15 KD endemic provinces and 11 KD non-endemic provinces in mainland China were measured using hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Spatial description and spatial analysis of hair Se were conducted. Th

A Case Report of Cushing's Disease Presenting as Hair Loss.

Cushing's syndrome is a rare endocrine disorder that comprises a large group of signs and symptoms resulting from chronic exposure to excess corticosteroids. Most cases of Cushing's syndrome are due to increased adrenocorticotropic hormone production from a pituitary adenoma, which is referred to as Cushing's disease. Most of the signs and symptoms are nonspecific and common in the general population, making a diagnosis often challenging. However, several dermatological manifestations, such as fragile skin, easy bruising, and reddish purple striae, are more discriminatory. Because uncontrolled

The hair follicle melanocytes in vitiligo in relation to disease duration.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary disorder of skin and hair. Active melanocytes in hair follicles can be detected by DOPA and immunohistochemical staining, while amelanotic melanocytes can only be detected by the latter. None of the studies on hair melanocytes in vitiligo discussed the effect of disease duration on these melanocytes. Here, we study the presence of melanotic and amelanotic melanocytes in vitiligo hair follicles and statistically correlating their presence with the disease duration. METHODS: This study was conducted on 30 patients with vitiligo and 10 norm

Hirschsprung disease associated with severe cartilage-hair hypoplasia.

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia is a chondrodysplasia with a high incidence of Hirschsprung disease. This study suggests that Hirschsprung disease is associated especially with severe cartilage-hair hypoplasia: the patients with Hirschsprung disease had severe growth failure and a higher incidence of alopecia, infections, malignancies, and childhood anemia than the patients with cartilage-hair hypoplasia who did not have Hirschsprung disease.

[Menkes' kinky hair disease: report of 2 cases].

Menkes' kinky hair disease (trichopoliodystrophy) is a rare inherited X-linked recessive disease with an incidence of about 1:35,000, and is rare reported previously in Taiwan. We present 2 cases with typical features including sparse, coarse and stubby, kinky hair, depigmented skin, pudgy face, arrow-shaped upper lip, hypotonia, Babinski signs bilaterally, profound psychomotor retardation with disability of head control or rolling over, and poorly controlled myoclonic jerks. Both were male infants with a family history of male relatives died in early childhood. Their hairs showed pili torti a

[Menkes' kinky hair disease: report of one case].

A male infant, 2-month-old, was delivered normally at term. He weighed 3.0 Kg and was stated to be quite well until convulsion was presented at the age of 1 month. The convulsion was complex partial seizure in character. Physical examinations showed body weight 2.7 Kg (less than 3 percentile), body temperature 35.7 degrees C, opisthotonic in posture, staring of eyes and unawareness of the outside environment. His hair appeared sparse, coarse and light yellowish color. Laboratory examinations showed normal hemogram and cerebrospinal fluid data. Low serum copper (10 mg/dl), ceruloplasmin (13.5 m

Menkes kinky hair disease with 'ragged red' fibers.

A 30-month-old infant with Menkes kinky-hair disease died, with prominent vascular, cerebral and cerebellar degeneration. Increased numbers of mitochondria containing homogeneous dense bodies were seen on electron-microscopic examination of Purkinje cells. Subsarcolemmal aggregates of mitochondria ('ragged red' fibers) were present in skeletal muscle. These mitochondrial alterations support the hypothesis that copper deficiency results in mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

Menkes' kinky hair disease: clinical and experimental study.

A pedigree of Menkes' kinky hair disease (MKHD) is reported. One patient of this family who underwent copper treatment was followed for three years with fundus examinations and ERG measurement. The blood copper level remained normal after six months of age, when intravenous treatment was switched from cupric acetate to cupric sulfate. Optic nerve atrophy and decrease in amplitude of the ERG were observed at three years of age. In an experiment using mouse models of MKHD (macular mouse mutant, Moml), we compared the affected mice that received copper treatment with normal mice. However, there w

Detection of Fabry's disease heterozygotes by hair root analysis.

The alpha-galactosidase/beta-hexosaminidase ratio was measured for individual hair roots as a method for heterozygote detection in Fabry's disease. Hair root analysis in control individuals revealed no striking sex difference in alpha-galactosidase/beta-hexosaminidase ratio when five males and five females were compared. The values for the ratio X 100, calculating both enzyme activities in nmol of product per min per microliter of hair extract, ranged from 0.8 to 9 for controls and from less than 0.1 to 0.4 for two hemizygous males. Hair root analysis in four heterozygotes with clinical eviden

Morphometric prediction of mesenchymal stromal cell-like immunosuppressive capacity of human hair follicle dermal sheath cup cells: an implication for regenerative medicine in hair loss diseases.

BACKGROUND: Human hair follicle dermal sheath cup cells (DSCCs) hold promise as a cell source of regenerative medicine treatment for hair loss owing to their ability to secrete growth factors and/or signal pathway activators. The therapeutic effect of autologous DSCCs transplantation for male/female pattern hair loss (PHL) was demonstrated in a phase III equivalent clinical study. Intralesional inflammation has been implicated in the pathophysiology of various hair loss diseases, including PHL. As DSCCs possess mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC)-like properties and MSCs are immunosuppressive,

Menkes disease--an autopsy case with metal analysis of hair.

We report the first case of Menkes' disease in Korea, occurring in a 1 1/2 year old boy with characteristic clinical, arteriographic and pathologic features. Postmortem examination revealed widespread neuronal destruction and abnormally tortuous and elongated large arteries including cerebral, visceral and limb vessels. Microscopically, many of the hairs formed were twisted (pili torti), of varying caliber (monilethrix), and fractured (trichorrhexis nodosa). In the radioactivated analysis of scalp hair, copper elements was not found. The abnormal vessels were characterized by fragmentation and
