Capecitabine-induced oral mucosal hyperpigmentation associated with hand-foot syndrome - A literature review.

BACKGROUND: Capecitabine (Xeloda®) is a cytotoxic, antimetabolite chemotherapeutic agent. Its most common adverse events are diarrhea, hand-foot syndrome (HFS), hyperbilirubinemia, hyperpigmentation, fatigue, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal effects. HFS or palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE) is an adverse reaction resulting from therapy with chemotherapeutic agents, classified into three degrees. Hyperpigmentation, as an adverse effect of capecitabine, can occur in different locations and with different patterns. The skin, nails and oral mucosal membrane can be affected. OBJECT

Hand-foot syndrome induced by chemotherapy drug: Case series study and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy drugs can be responsible of several side effects such as hand-foot syndrome (HFS). This syndrome is also called "palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia" and "acral erythema." Without proper management, it can deteriorate the quality of life of a patient, leading to temporary or definitive stop of chemotherapy. AIM OF THIS STUDY: To identify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients, the risk factors for occurrence and worsening of this syndrome, and the drugs most likely to be responsible of HFS. METHODS: Our study was retrospective, including 42 pati

Guillain-Barré Syndrome Following Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in an Adult Patient.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) stands as one of the primary causes of acute flaccid paralysis. It includes acute-onset peripheral nerve lesions and typically follows a monophasic course. Its etiopathogenesis is linked to an immune-mediated response to a prior infection, often respiratory or intestinal. The main variants of GBS are acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, which accounts for approximately 90% of cases in the USA and Europe, and acute motor axonal neuropathy, responsible for about 10% of cases in the USA and Europe. From the literature review, only one case of GBS preceded

An unusual manifestation of Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome: Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma - A case report.

Hand-Foot-Genital Syndrome (HFGS) is a dominantly inherited condition and one of the rarest cases encountered in clinical practice. It might be presented with a wide variety of limb malformations and urogenital defects manifestations. In this report, a unique and novel case of HFGS accompanied with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder is described in a two-year-old male. The patient was admitted to the hospital in order to investigate a progressively enlarging mass in the lower abdomen. During hospitalization, oliguria was noted by resident physicians. However, hypospadias and dys

Severe manifestations of hand-foot-genital syndrome associated with a novel HOXA13 mutation.

We report on a girl with absent nails, short/absent distal phalanges of the second to fifth fingers and toes, short thumbs, absent halluces, and carpo-tarsal coalition who also had genitourinary malformations. Trio-based whole exome sequencing identified a novel de novo mutation (c.1102A>T, p.Ile368Phe) in the HOXA13 gene. Heterozygous HOXA13 mutations have been previously reported in hand-foot-genital syndrome and Guttmacher syndrome, which are variably associated with small nails, short distal and middle phalanges, short thumbs and halluces, but not absent nails. Considering the molecular da

Hand-foot syndrome variant in a dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase-deficient patient treated with capecitabine.

We present a case with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency that manifested a variant of hand-foot syndrome (HFS). A 52-year-old man received capecitabine for adjuvant treatment of rectal cancer. On the ninth day of the first cycle, he presented to the clinic with a rash on the dorsum of both hands accompanied by symptoms of pain, erythema, swelling, and desquamation consistent with grade 3 HFS. The palms of his hands and soles of his feet were only tender with no apparent rash or discoloration. Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase activity was evaluated by radio assay using peripheral

Discoloration and Dilemma: A Case Report of Hand-Foot Syndrome Associated With Capecitabine Use.

This case highlights the occurrence of hand-foot syndrome due to the use of an antimetabolite group of drugs, capecitabine, which was used in the chemotherapy of a 56-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with rectosigmoid carcinoma. The patient was diagnosed with rectosigmoid carcinoma two months ago and underwent laparoscopic lower anterior resection and colorectal anastomosis. Subsequently, the patient commenced chemotherapy treatment with a combination of oxaliplatin and capecitabine. The patient presented to us with complaints of loose stools for the past three days, and discoloration o

Identification of Norovirus and Human Parechovirus in Patients With Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is caused mostly by enteroviruses. However, other viral agents also can cause similar syndromes, and hence, the infections they cause are often misdiagnosed clinically. To determine non-enterovirus etiologic agents in HFMD-like cases, we screened enterovirus-negative samples collected from the patients who were clinically diagnosed as HFMD in China. METHODS: Two hundred enterovirus-negative samples were collected previously in Wenzhou city of Zhejiang province, China. Both high throughput sequencing and RT-PCR were used to screen viral agents. A missense mutation of HOXA13 underlies hand-foot-genital syndrome in a Chinese family.

Hand-foot-genital syndrome (HFGS) is a rare autosomal dominant inherited syndrome characterized by limb malformations and urogenital defects. HFGS is caused by mutations in the HOXA13 gene. The aim of this study was to identify causative mutations in individuals and to explore the molecular pathogenesis in a Chinese family with HFGS. We performed Sanger sequencing and identified a recurrent missense mutation in the homeodomain (c.1123G>T, p.V375F) of HOXA13, molecular modelling predicted the mutation would affect DNA binding, and a luciferase reporter assay indicated that it impaired the abili

Reconstruction of bilateral tibial aplasia and split hand-foot syndrome in a father and daughter.

BACKGROUND: Tibial aplasia is of heterogeneous aetiology, the majority of reports are sporadic. We describe the reconstruction procedures in two subjects - a daughter and father manifested autosomal dominant (AD) inheritance of the bilateral tibial aplasia and split hand-foot syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reconstruction of these patients required multiple surgical procedures and orthoprosthesis was mandatory. The main goal of treatment was to achieve walking. Stabilization of the ankle joint by fibular-talar-chondrodesis on both sides, followed by bilateral Brown-procedure at the knee join

Identification of the Novel Capecitabine Metabolites in Capecitabine-Treated Patients with Hand-Foot Syndrome.

Hand-foot syndrome (HFS), the most common side effect of capecitabine, is a dose-limiting cutaneous toxicity with only rare therapeutic options. The causative mechanisms of HFS are still unclear. Many studies suggested that capecitabine or its metabolites caused the toxicity. This study is attempting to determine if there are any new metabolites that may be present and be linked to toxicity. For this purpose, 25 patients who ingested capecitabine orally were enrolled and divided into HFS positive and negative groups. Urine and plasma samples were collected before administration and five cycles

Genomic rearrangement at 10q24 in non-syndromic split-hand/split-foot malformation.

Split-hand/split-foot malformation (SHFM) is a congenital limb malformation characterized by a median cleft of hand and/or foot due to the absence of central rays. Five loci for syndromic and non-syndromic SHFM, termed SHFM1-5, have been mapped to date. Recently, a 0.5 Mb tandem genomic duplication was found at chromosome 10q24 in SHFM3 families. To refine the minimum duplicated region and to further characterize the SHFM3 locus, we screened 28 non-syndromic SHFM families for tandem genomic duplication of 10q24 by Southern blot and sequence analysis of the dactylin gene. Of 28 families, only t

Serum Lenvatinib Concentration Monitoring in a Patient With Thyroid Cancer Exhibiting Hand-Foot Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is a common adverse event associated with lenvatinib treatment. Lenvatinib dose adjustment using therapeutic drug monitoring may be beneficial in the management of HFS, as symptoms improve with dose reduction or treatment interruption. The serum lenvatinib levels were monitored in a patient with lenvatinib-induced HFS. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old woman was administered lenvatinib (24 mg/d) for papillary thyroid cancer. Although lenvatinib was withheld several times owing to the occurrence of HFS, the severity of the HFS was controlled to within grade
