A systematic review of the association between the childhood sexual abuse experiences of mothers and the abuse status of their children: Protection strategies, intergenerational transmission, and reactions to the abuse of their children.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) represents a significant public health concern. Research shows an association between the CSA status of mothers and the abuse status of their children, how they react to the abuse of their children, and behaviors they engage in to protect their children from abuse. However, a systematic review of this literature has yet to be conducted, and this review aimed to fill that gap. Seven databases and search engines were searched for relevant studies from inception until March 2017. Reference lists of included studies and titles of studies that cited included studies were al

Beyond TRISS: A Contemporary Expected Mortality Model for Trauma quality review-Trauma Quality Improvement Program, 2017-2024.

BACKGROUND: Trauma programs continue to use the Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) to estimate expected mortality for quality review, although its coefficients reflect an older population and care era. We developed Contemporary Expected Mortality for Trauma (CEM-Trauma) for the registry-based benchmarking use case historically served by TRISS. METHODS: We hypothesized that a contemporary model using familiar injury, age, mechanism, and early physiology variables would more accurately predict in-hospital death than both historical and updated TRISS. We studied 5,399,314 TRISS-eligible Tr

The COVID-19 pandemic and associated rise in pediatric firearm injuries: A multi-institutional study.

BACKGROUND: Firearm sales in the United States (U.S.) markedly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to determine if firearm injuries in children were associated with stay-at-home orders (SHO) during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized there would be an increase in pediatric firearm injuries during SHO. METHODS: This was a multi institutional, retrospective study of institutional trauma registries. Patients <18 years with traumatic injuries meeting National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) criteria were included. A "COVID" cohort, defined as time from initiation of state SHO thr

Healing our intergenerational wounds: a praxis of community healing envisioned by refugee young adults engaging in participatory avatar-based community circles.

Refugee communities across the world have long gathered to connect and support one another during times of crisis, and this has been well-documented. Despite the vast amount of literature pertaining to coping and resiliency among refugee communities, there is limited knowledge about refugee community healing. Approximately one in three refugees experiences depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress that can persist long after displacement. Dominant approaches within Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) psychologies tend to conceptualize trauma through an individualist

'The cycle must stop here': Patterns of intergenerational transmission of traumatizing WWII experiences in three generations.

This study investigates the intergenerational consequences of World War II (WWII) experiences in the Netherlands. It explores how trauma and resilience were transmitted across three generations and the role of communication in shaping these patterns. In 2021 and 2022, thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten families, each including one respondent from three generations. First-generation participants had experienced potentially traumatizing events, including persecution and wartime violence. Findings indicate that intergenerational impacts are heterogeneous: in some families,

Evaluating the Regional Differences in Pediatric Injury Patterns During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Reports of pediatric injury patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic are conflicting and lack the granularity to explore differences across regions. We hypothesized there would be considerable variation in injury patterns across pediatric trauma centers in the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter, retrospective study evaluating patients <18 y old with traumatic injuries meeting National Trauma Data Bank criteria was performed. Patients injured after stay-at-home orders through September 2020 ("COVID" cohort) were compared to "Historical" controls from an averaged per

A legacy of fear: Physiological evidence for intergenerational effects of trauma exposure on fear and safety signal learning among African Americans.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of maternal trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on children's physiological response to threat and safety signals during a fear conditioning task in trauma-exposed mothers and children. METHOD: Participants were African American mother-child dyads (N = 137; children aged 8-13 years). Mothers' trauma history and PTSD symptoms were assessed; Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted from these measures to identify distinct classes. Children reported violence exposure and completed a differential fear conditioning task using fear-potenti

Voices from the past: Mental and physical outcomes described by American Civil War amputees.

Studies of trauma commonly concentrate on the psychological and physiological effects of recent violent events. Although today connections are becoming more explicitly drawn, early studies of the aftermath of amputation serve to shed light on modern understanding of the interaction of the physical and emotional. The study of combat amputation, dissociation, and related posttraumatic stress largely began with the work of 19th-century Philadelphia physician Silas Weir Mitchell, who brought attention to the phenomenon of phantom limb pain. Less known, however, are the data he and his son, John K.

Sickle cell trait and multisystem trauma: an unaddressed urgent knowledge gap.

Sickle cell trait (SCT) has historically been considered a benign condition, but SCT-positive patients have increased baseline risk of venous thromboembolism and chronic kidney disease, as well as increased risk of sickled erythrocytes in settings of hypoxia, acidosis, and hypovolemia. Multisystem traumatic injuries are a common clinical scenario, in which hypoxia, acidosis, and hypovolemia occur; however, little is known about how SCT-positive status impacts outcomes in multisystem trauma. We conducted a scoping literature review to investigate what was known about SCT in the setting of multi

Relationship between family history of mandatory boarding school experiences and suicide risk in US reservation-based Native American youth: a cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a leading cause of death among Native American youth and adolescents in the USA. A myriad of factors have been correlated with risk for suicide ideation (SI)/suicide attempt (SA), including historical trauma; however, accurate measurement of historical trauma has been inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of family history of a negative mandatory boarding school experience with SI and SAs. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was conducted with 288 Native youth aged 15-24 years from the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana. Multinomial regression was applied

Acknowledging the past while looking to the future: conceptualizing indigenous child trauma.

Trauma affects children from all ethnicities, nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds. However, indigenous children may experience trauma differently than their majority population peers due to traumatic histories of colonization and marginalization. This article reports on an exploratory qualitative study of how service providers in Western Montana and Northern Norway conceptualize Native American and Sámi children's experiences of trauma today. Findings reveal that participants relate current trauma experiences of indigenous youth to historical and intergenerational traumas.

A Century of Post-Traumatic Appendicitis: A Comprehensive Review with an Illustrative Case.

Background and Clinical Significance: Acute appendicitis following blunt abdominal trauma is a rare and historically debated clinical entity. We present a century-spanning descriptive review of 106 cases of post-traumatic appendicitis, embedded with an illustrative pediatric case initially managed conservatively. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines across PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, encompassing a 100-year period (1925-2025). Clinical variables, trauma mechanisms, and outcomes were extracted and statistically analyzed by

Black Lives Matter: We are in the Same Storm but we are not in the Same Boat.

Black Lives Matter is a clarion call for racial equality and racial justice. With the arrival of Africans as slaves in 1619, a racial hierarchy was formed in the United States. However, slavery is commonly dismissed as that less than noble aspect of the United States' history without really confronting the legacies of racial inequality and racial injustice left in its wake. White supremacy, based on the myths of white superiority and Black inferiority, have obscured racial inequality and racial injustice, resulting in blaming the victims. Using Black Lives Matter as a platform, we focus on som

When Sexual Trauma Survivors with Severe Psychiatric Disabilities Experience Institutional Care.

Individuals with severe psychiatric disabilities face many challenges from their experience of mental health problems, but also from disenfranchisement, marginalization, and stigmatization from a sociocultural experience. Those who are sexual trauma survivors also have unique challenges and intersecting experiences, which are not historically well understood, acknowledged, or treated in U.S. systems of care. Both in historic and modern mental health systems there have been methods thought of as interventions that have been or are currently reported as traumatizing to those who experience them.

Mandibular Trauma in Close Combat: Possible Rifle-Butt Injuries at the Battle of Kumyangjang-Ni (1951).

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial trauma in warfare is most commonly associated with ballistic injuries; however, close combat may also produce blunt facial trauma through the use of rifle butts or other striking weapons. OBSERVATION: During the Battle of Kumyangjang-ni in 1951, soldiers of the Turkish Brigade engaged troops of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in intense close combat. Historical accounts report that many fallen enemy soldiers exhibited severe injuries to the mandible, giving rise to the nickname "rifle-butt battle." DISCUSSION: Although these observations were not documented in fo

Investigations of the relation between birth trauma and pelvic size in females from a medieval gravesite from Lübeck.

This study proposes that female pelvises showing no birth traumata may have had ideal child-bearing bone constitutions, differing significantly in size and shape from those with severe traumata, resulting in advantages during parturition. Based on this assumption, the female pelvises of a late medieval mass grave from Lübeck have been examined in terms of pelvic osteometric standards in obstetrics, morphological aspects, the degree of birth trauma lesions, and the possible effect of age at death on trauma mark severity. The results imply much wider pelvises (up to 1 cm) in the historical popul

Model Minority and Its Discontents.

Model Minority expectations for Asian Americans have been in circulation for more than seven decades, and their grip on the Asian American psyche endures to the present day. In previous papers, the author addressed Asian American compliance with these expectations as a trauma-based, identifying-with-aggressor adaptation to the anti-Asian racism in American society: Reeling from the long history of racial discrimination that culminated in the incarceration of 120,000 individuals of Japanese origin during WWII, Asian Americans embraced compliance and model citizenship as a way of survival. Childhood adversity and coping among Indigenous university students in Canada: Considerations when examining adverse childhood experiences.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with health-risk behaviors and chronic disease development. Although valuable, conventional ACE surveys may fail to adequately capture the range of adversities that some communities experience. The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether First Nations and Metis postsecondary students and staff in Ontario identified domains of ACE not captured by conventional ACE surveys. In addition, this study aimed to identify potential coping strategies or factors. METHOD: Qualitative interview and focus group methodologies w

Genomic insights into ancestry and infectious disease in 17th-century colonial Brazil.

During urban redevelopment in the historic district of a Brazilian metropolis, archaeologists uncovered a previously undocumented 17th-century cemetery, containing the closely spaced remains of over two dozen young adult males of military age. Historical records suggest the site once housed a makeshift hospital, raising questions about the origins and causes of death of those interred, particularly given the absence of skeletal evidence for violent or fatal trauma. The current study integrates bioarchaeological, historical, and genomic data to investigate the ancestry and putative disease-rela

Sexual risk behavior and symptoms of historical loss in American Indian men.

Native Americans in the United States are not typically regarded as a most at-risk population for HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), despite emerging evidence which suggests otherwise. As a result, Native Americans lack access to key prevention services and programs. In planning prevention programs for this unique population, however, it is important to take into account the cultural factors that may be implicated in health risk behaviors. Historical Loss is a type of historical trauma that has been reported in Native Americans, and which may be related to health behaviors. W
