In 1477, the State of Burgundy from Charles the Bold comprised the Low Countries (including large parts of present-day Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and northern France) as well as the duchy of Burgundy and the counties of Nevers and Burgundy. From 44 towns in the State of Burgundy, their apothecaries have been identified and based on studies on the population in European mediaeval towns, the number of inhabitants per apothecary (= the client-potential) could be established for the years 1400, 1440, 1480, 1520, 1560 and 1600. A distinction among small towns, medium sized and big towns h

The remedies proposed for the prevention and treatment of the plague by the Medical Faculty of Paris and by Joannes de Vesalia are mainly derived from plants and animals apart from some minerals used in medieval medicine. Alchemical preparations, absent in the Compendium, are rarely mentioned by Joannes de Vesalia. About 90% of the simples preconized by the Faculty of Paris are still used as remedies in the tractates of Joannes de Vesalia and Montanus. The development of chemistry in the 16th and 17th centuries is responsible for the introduction of 'chemical' medicines in therapy. Montanus ac

Dicephalus conjoined twins (2 heads on 1 body) form a distinct subgroup. They are often stillborn because of cardiopulmonary malformations. This article describes 17 historical cases with particular emphasis on viability. There are reliable reports of unseparated dicephali reaching maturity; 1 pair (the Tocci brothers) reached at least 34 years of age. In the absence of concomitant cardiac, pulmonary, and intestinal malformations, dicephalus conjoined twins may well attain adulthood. This appears to be unrelated to whether they have 4 (dicephalus tetrabrachius) or 3 (dicephalus tribrachius) ar

Keloid is a fibroproliferative skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation and growth beyond the original wound margins. Recent research indicates that it is driven by systemic inflammation and vascular dysfunction. This led us to speculate that keloid may be a modern inflammatory disease, similar to hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. To test this, the historical medical literature was examined for keloid descriptions. Specifically, medical databases, including PubMed, were searched in English, Chinese, and Japanese using the terms "keloid," "hypertrophic scar," "scar," "scar

The purpose of this chapter is to present how past surgeons have viewed the pericranium and how they have reacted to its appearances. In ancient times, the membrane was considered formed by the dura through the sutures and it retained a relationship with the dura via vessels in the sutures. It was considered advisable to strip it totally from any area to be examined for fissure fractures and also for any area to be trepanned, as pericranial injury was thought to lead to fever and inflammation. In the 18th century, a new idea arose that posttraumatic spontaneous separation of the pericranium fr

In reviewing three recent books on the history of rabies (hydrophobia), this essay explores ways in which historians can frame, or figure, global histories of this ancient and still-dreaded disease, focusing especially on problems of place, time, and agency.

Most of the history of appendicitis and appendectomy has been made during the past two centuries. Jacopo Berengario da Carpi gave the first description of this structure in 1522. Gabriele Fallopio, in 1561, appears to have been the first writer to compare the appendix to a worm. In1579 Caspar Bauhin proposed the ingenious theory that the appendix served in intrauterine life as a receptacle for the faexes. Many of anatomists added more or less insignificant ideas concerning the structure of the appendix and entered upon useless controversy concerning the name, function, position of the appendix

By studying the surviving documents describing surveillance and methods of control of zoonoses in the distant past, the history of the fight against these diseases can be retraced. Prior to the 20th Century, the best known zoonoses were, amongst others, rabies, anthrax, glanders, tuberculosis, plague, yellow fever, influenza, and certain zoonotic parasitic diseases. An analysis of historical events yields a number of lessons as to the positive and negative influences of past theories regarding the aetiology, contagiousness and control of these diseases. These lessons serve as a reminder, to al

Northern Europe at the beginning of the 16th Century was in turmoil as a result of religious and political dissention, epidemics of plague, syphilis, ergotism, and famine, and the threat of the Ottoman Empire. In Alsace, a fulcrum between Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands, Grünewald painted his celebrated and complex altarpiece at Isenheim in a convent chapel of the Antonine religious order that kept a hospital for the care of patients suffering from ergotism, plague, syphilis and other illnesses. The ten paintings of this altarpiece convey a series of religious, medical and pol

Since the time of the ancient Greeks, physicians have recognized a certain relatedness between the mental states of depression and mania. In the mid-Nineteenth century, French alienists proposed a 'double' or 'circular' illness consisting of alternating depressed and manic episodes and at the beginning of the twentieth century, Emil Kraepelin introduced the term 'manic-depressive insanity.' Kraepelin's broad clinical experience resulted in compelling descriptions of the symptoms of mood disorders that have arguably never been surpassed. The Kraepelinian nosology continues to provide a touchsto

This comprehensive historical review traces the evolution of orthodontics from antiquity to the 21st century. It begins by defining the major stages of orthodontic development, then explores early concerns about dental alignment in classical civilizations, followed by innovations in the 16th and 17th centuries that laid the groundwork for modern intervention. The 18th century marked a turning point with more deliberate attempts to correct malocclusions, culminating in the emergence of formal orthodontic treatment in the 19th century with the advent of fixed appliances and specialized elements

The history of stroke dates back to antiquity, where it was first described as "apoplexia" in Hippocratic writings. For centuries, understanding of the pathology was limited, based on Galen's theories and humoral pathology. Significant advances were made by Islamic scholars who expanded the knowledge and addressed existing contradictions. Only with Harvey's 17th-century description of blood circulation did a deeper understanding emerge, followed by the work of Wepfer and Virchow, who uncovered the role of vascular occlusions and embolisms. The discovery of carotid stenosis and the description

Worldwide, and especially in Asia, myopia is a major vision-threatening disorder. From AD 1600 on, to prevent myopia, authors warned against near work without sufficient pauses. There was an abundance of theories about the causes of myopia, the most common one being the necessity of extra convergence on nearby work with thickened extraocular muscles and elevated intraocular pressure. Ocular tenotomies against myopia were in vogue for a while. Axial lengthening of the eye in myopia was mentioned around 1700, but it took 150 years to become accepted as the most prevalent sign of high myopia. In
