Low-Income Preschool Children's Free Sugar Consumption and Its Association With the Home Environment.

BACKGROUND: High consumption of sugary foods and beverages by young children has negative health effects; however, few studies have examined multiple domains of the home environment simultaneously or included sugars from 100% fruit juice. This study hypothesized that less favorable socio-cultural, built, and economic home environments would be associated with higher free sugar intake among low-income preschool children. METHODS: Caregivers (n = 170) of 3-5-year-old children enrolled in Head Start programs completed questionnaires assessing food and drink intake, home environment, and food par

Dogs evaluated in a home environment show decreased arterial blood pressure and stress levels.

BACKGROUND: Stress may influence blood pressure (BP), making home-based measurements potentially more reliable. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Compare BP, stress, and clinical laboratory results obtained from dogs in 2 environments. ANIMALS: Forty client-owned healthy dogs. METHODS: A crossover observational study evaluated 40 healthy dogs after acclimatization in hospital and home settings. The BP was measured using Doppler and oscillometry, and clinical laboratory and stress-related variables were recorded. Blood and urine samples, including for cortisol determination, were collected. One urine s

Understanding Older Persons' Experiences of Care Encounters in the Home Environment: A Hermeneutic Study.

AIM: To explore and gain a deeper understanding of older persons' experiences of care encounters when their home becomes a workplace. BACKGROUND: Worldwide healthcare services are increasingly being provided in older persons' homes by registered nurses. This presents new challenges as the home environment of older persons now doubles as a workplace for healthcare professionals. However, there is limited research available on how older persons experience care encounters when their homes serve as workplaces and how this influences their overall well-being and quality of life. DESIGN: A qualita

Home literacy environment and literacy outcomes in individuals with Williams syndrome and Down syndrome.

ABSTRACTBackground: The home literacy environment (HLE) has rarely been examined for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, including individuals with Williams syndrome and Down syndrome. Method: The current study surveyed carers of individuals with Down syndrome (n = 48) and Williams syndrome (n = 18) in the United Kingdom (UK). Results: The study reports that individuals with Down syndrome were rated higher in general reading skills and writing, while the Williams syndrome group scored higher for speaking. Yet, individuals with Down syndrome were more likely to engage in informal act

Home and Family Environment Related to Development of Obesity: A 21-Year Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Early-life conditions are important for the development of obesity. We hypothesized that home and family characteristics reflective of less supportive environments during childhood will be associated with higher adult BMI and faster BMI growth between ages 5 and 21 years. We also examined the timing and acceleration of BMI increase by adult weight status (normal weight, overweight, obese, and extremely obese) to discern how BMI increase differs across group and across time. METHODS: BMI was assessed in 1000 Chilean youth (52% female) at ages 5, 10, 15, and 21 years. Latent growth

Deployment of assistive living technology in a nursing home environment: methods and lessons learned.

BACKGROUND: With an ever-growing ageing population, dementia is fast becoming the chronic disease of the 21st century. Elderly people affected with dementia progressively lose their autonomy as they encounter problems in their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Hence, they need supervision and assistance from their family members or professional caregivers, which can often lead to underestimated psychological and financial stress for all parties. The use of Ambient Assistive Living (AAL) technologies aims to empower people with dementia and relieve the burden of their caregivers. The aim of thi

Risk-free hospital at home: Strengthening safety in the patient's environment through hospital pharmacy.

Hospital at home has become an established care model capable of delivering high-complexity treatment in the patient's own environment; however, it shifts part of the medication circuit to a less controlled setting, introducing variability that may compromise pharmacotherapeutic safety. A descriptive quality-improvement study was conducted to evaluate the implementation of a multidimensional medication-safety programme in the Hospital at Home unit of a tertiary-care hospital. The programme was structured according to the Joint Commission International standards for home care and led by the Hos

Nursing Home Administrator Experiences Navigating the Changing Regulatory Environment During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and state health agencies implemented numerous regulations for nursing homes addressing infection control and data reporting. This study explores interviews (n = 156) with administrators of 40 nursing homes across the U.S. between July 2020 and December 2021 to better understand their experiences with governmental agencies amid shifting regulatory standards, frequent inspections, and possible enforcement actions. Administrators highlighted confusion due to the evolving and sometimes conflicting guidance between st

Changes in diet quality and home food environment in preschool children following weight management.

BACKGROUND: Family-based obesity treatment interventions can successfully reduce energy intake in preschoolers. An implicit goal of obesity treatment interventions is to improve diet quality, but diet quality has been less examined as a treatment outcome in studies of preschoolers. The purpose of this study was to conduct a secondary analysis comparing the change in diet quality and home food environment in preschoolers assigned to a behavioral family-based obesity intervention (LAUNCH), motivational interviewing (MI) condition, or standard care (STC) condition. METHODS: Three 24-h dietary re

Multilingual home environment and specific language impairment: a case-control study in Chinese children.

Specific language impairment (SLI) is a common developmental disorder in young children. To investigate the association between multilingual home environment and SLI, we conducted a case-control study in Hong Kong Chinese children over a 4-year period in the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital. Consecutive medical records of all new referrals below 5 years of age were reviewed and children diagnosed with SLI (case) were compared with those referred with other developmental and behavioural problems who had been assessed as having normal language and overall development (control) using the Griff

Reports of the childhood home environment in early-onset dysthymia and episodic major depression.

This study addressed 2 questions: (a) is early-onset dysthymia associated with reports of a disturbed childhood home environment; and (b) can adverse early experiences account, at least in part, for the differing clinical presentations of dysthymia and major depression? Participants included 97 outpatients with early-onset dysthymia, 45 outpatients with episodic major depression, and 45 normal controls. The early home environment was assessed blind to diagnosis using both interview and self-report measures. Early-onset dysthymia patients reported significantly more physical and sexual abuse an

Home and school urban food environments in relation to childhood overweight and obesity in Madrid.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the availability of unhealthy food outlets in children's home and school environments and overweight/obesity in Madrid, while exploring effect modification by sex and family affluence. METHODS: We used individual-level data from a survey of 5,961 children aged 3 to 12 years. We created 400-m and 800-m street-network buffers around home and school addresses and counted the number of unhealthy food outlets within home, school, and combined home-school food environments. We estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using r

Early home environments and reward-processing in adolescence: The unique role of harsh parenting.

BACKGROUND: Reward-processing, i.e., how one evaluates potential reward and punishment and how one uses this information to make decisions, is strongly related to mental health and is especially useful for understanding motivation, in turn associated with many health, educational and socio-economic outcomes. Research has yet to explore the role of the home's emotional and physical environment early in life on reward-processing in adolescence, a period characterised by increased reward sensitivity. OBJECTIVE: We carried out this study to fill this gap. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used data f

Use of a systematic process to improve the utility of a home food environment audit tool.

This paper describes a process to reduce the length of a validated home food audit tool without compromising its strong psychometric properties. A team of investigators used secondary data to make consensus decisions about item reduction of the audit tool. The steps included assessing content validity of individual food items within food categories and construct validity of food items and related nutrient intake. The process resulted in a 25% reduction in the number of items included in the tool without compromising its psychometric properties. This work serves as a guide for other researchers

What makes home environments favorable to independence: perspectives of autistic people and their parents.

PURPOSE: Few autistic adolescents and adults manage to integrate a home that enables them to fully exercise their independence, even if that is a desire shared by many of them. Creating residential environments that are favorable to their independence at home is a promising, yet poorly explored, avenue. The aim of this study conducted in Québec (Canada) is to identify the main environmental factors influencing their independence at home from the perspectives of autistic people and their parents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The walking interview method was used to collect the perspectives of 10 dya
