Ecological effects of home-based, school-based, and community-based training of parents of children with learning and behavior problems.

A federally funded three year project to train parents of children with learning and behavior problems is discussed in terms of its ecological impact on parents, their children, their children's teachers, and on the community at large. The design of the project including the home intervention component, the school-based support group component, and the community component is briefly detailed. A comprehensive analysis of data on the effects of the various parent training components on parent, teacher and student perceptions of each other, as well as on student achievement, attendance and self-c

Prevalence and predictors of masked hypertension detected by home blood pressure monitoring in children and adolescents: the Arsakeion School study.

BACKGROUND: Studies using ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring have shown that in children and adolescents masked hypertension (MH) is not uncommon. This school-based study investigated the prevalence and the characteristics of MH diagnosed using home BP measurements. METHODS: A total of 765 subjects aged 6-18 years were assessed with office (two visits, six readings) and home BP measurements (3 days, 12 readings). Office hypertension was diagnosed using the US Task Force normalcy tables and home hypertension using the Arsakeion normalcy tables (> or = 95th percentile for both). White-co

Knowledge, attitudes and preventive practices towards soil-transmitted helminthiases among teachers in schools implementing the home-grown school feeding program in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) are prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, impacting school-aged children significantly. Teachers, integral to STH control through the Home-Grown School Feeding Program (HGSFP), need adequate knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices (KAP) for successful STH prevention. However, there is limited research on teacher KAP regarding STH in Enugu State, particularly concerning its endemic nature. This study assessed the KAP of primary school teachers involved in the HGSFP in Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria, aiming to inform targeted intervent

Family-Based Dietary Counselling in Pediatric Obesity: A Proposed System-Oriented Framework Integrating Home, School, and Social Environments.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity is a complex, multifactorial condition that requires comprehensive and sustained interventions. Despite the central role of dietary modification in obesity management, current approaches to dietary counselling remain heterogeneous and often fail to account for the broader environmental and social determinants of eating behavior. In pediatric populations, dietary habits are strongly influenced by family dynamics, home food environments, school settings, and peer interactions, highlighting the need for system-oriented intervention models. Methods: This st

Social inequalities in Irish children's cognitive and mental health during secondary school transition: the role of the home learning environment.

The transition from primary to secondary education is a pivotal stage in children's development, often marked by a widening of socioeconomic disparities in cognitive and mental health outcomes. While formal schooling is known to shape these inequalities, less is understood about how the home learning environment (HLE) contributes to developmental outcomes, particularly when schools are disrupted, such as during COVID-19-related school closures. This study examines the extent to which the HLE accounts for socioeconomic differences in cognitive ability and mental health among Irish adolescents.

Allergy and respiratory health effects of dampness and dampness-related agents in schools and homes: a cross-sectional study in Danish pupils.

Little is known about the health effects of school-related indoor dampness and microbial exposures. In this study, we investigated dampness and dampness-related agents in both homes and schools and their association with allergy and respiratory health effects in 330 Danish pupils. Classroom dampness was identified based on technical inspection and bedroom dampness on parents' self-report. Classroom and bedroom dust was analyzed for seven microbial components. Skin prick testing determined atopic sensitization. Lung function was expressed as z-scores for forced expiratory volume in one-second (

Recall of sexual abuse prevention education at school and home: Associations with sexual abuse experience, disclosure, protective parenting, and knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention is dominated by a focus on child education. However, evidence that this education reduces CSA risk is limited and mixed. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether participants' history of receiving school-based child sexual abuse prevention (CSAPP) was associated with experiencing CSA. Uniquely, we also investigated whether parent-led CSA education (PLSAE) and received protective parenting were associated with CSA. CSA knowledge was also considered. METHODS: Australian university students (N = 1265, Mage = 22.8, SD = 7.7, Moage = 18, Mdage = 20, 75% f
