The Relation between Psychiatric Diagnoses and Constipation in Hospitalized Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Objective. Constipation is a prevalent problem in patients with psychiatric disorders; it reduces quality of life and may lead to severe complications. The prevalence distribution of constipation across all psychiatric diagnoses in patients with severe mental illness (SMI) has hardly been studied. The aim of this study is to estimate the association between psychiatric disorders and constipation in SMI inpatients. Methods. The strength of the association between constipation (based on use of laxatives) and DSM-IV psychiatric diagnosis was studied in a cross-sectional study with "adjustment dis

Impact of antiretroviral treatment-related toxicities on hospital admissions in HIV-infected patients.

While classical opportunistic infections have decreased as the main cause of hospital admission of HIV-infected patients, other conditions including drug-related toxicities seem to have increased. We assessed the proportion of patients with hospital admission due to antiretroviral (ARV)-related toxicities over the last 7 years at a single HIV/AIDS reference institution located in Madrid. A total of 1981 consecutive hospital admissions in 1581 different HIV-infected patients were analyzed. Nearly half of them (45%) were on ARV therapy. Overall, ARV-related toxicities were the main or secondary

[Relation between colonization of hospital water supply by Legionella and risk of infection in patients].

The aim of the study was risk assessment for exposure to legionellae measured by seroreactivity of in-patients and infection in colonized hospitals. Sampling of water from distribution systems of two hospitals (A, B) revealed legionella contamination in 30.7% and 28.3% in the ranges of 10(4)-10(7) CFU/l. The most common isolates were of Legionella pneumophila sp. (L.p.) serotypes L.p.10 and 5 in hospital A, in hospital B L.p.1 (non-Pontiac group) and L.p. 3 (some of tested strains were virulent for guinea pigs). Paired sera of 64 patients from hospital A in the ages of 56 +/- 16.0 taken in the

The validity of mental patients' accounts of coercion-related behaviors in the hospital admission process.

Although the recent development of a measure for perceived coercion has led to great progress in research on coercion in psychiatric settings, there still exists no consensus on how to measure the existence of real coercive events or pressures. This article reports the development of a system for integrating chart review data and data from interviews with multiple participants in the decision for an individual to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital. The method generates a "most plausible factual account" (MPFA). We then compare this account with that of patients, admitting clinicians and oth

COVID-19-Related Downscaling of In-Hospital Liver Care Decreased Patient Satisfaction and Increased Liver-Related Mortality.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic necessitated down-scaling of in-hospital care to prohibit the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2. We (1) assessed patient perceptions on quality of care by telesurvey (cohort 1) and written questionnaire (cohort 2), and (2) analyzed trends in elective and nonelective admissions before (December 2019 to February 2020) and during (March to May 2020) the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria. A total of 279 outpatients were recruited into cohort 1 and 138 patients into cohort 2. All admissions from December 2019 to May 2020 to the Div

[Delays on the day of hospital discharge: An exploratory analysis of retrospective and prospective data on patient-related and process-related factors].

BACKGROUND: Delays on the day of hospital discharge place a significant burden on hospital resources, disrupt patient flow, and delay the release of bed capacity. The aim of this study was to identify the main causes and risk factors for delayed discharges, considering patient characteristics and discharge processes. METHODS: The exploratory study is based on a retrospective and prospective survey conducted on a surgical and an internal medicine ward of a university hospital. In the retrospective survey, discharge dates, demographic and clinical data, discharge type, comorbidities, and discha

The relation between resource use and in-hospital mortality for patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

A central issue in health policy with regard to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is whether quality of care and patient outcomes are affected by resource constraints. In an earlier study of 15 California hospitals between October 1986 and October 1987, we observed a markedly lower in-hospital mortality rate for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in the group of patients treated in hospitals that had a high level of experience with AIDS relative to the group treated in hospitals with low experience. We present the patterns of resource use at hospitals with high and low AIDS familiarity

Previous psychiatric hospitalizations as risk factors for single and multiple future alcohol-related hospitalizations in patients with alcohol use disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: People with alcohol use disorder (AUD) often have co-occurring psychiatric conditions. The association between psychiatric conditions and AUD relapse has not yet been fully explored. This study aimed to quantify different psychiatric comorbidities as risk factors for first and multiple AUD rehospitalizations in patients already hospitalized once for AUD. METHODS: We used a nation-wide routine health-care database in Scotland, UK, between 2010 and 2019. Individuals with a first hospitalization for AUD (codes F10.0-9 in the ICD-10 codes) were checked for previous hospitaliz

Frequency and determinants of surgical treatment in patients with uncomplicated disc-related sciatica hospitalized in the Rheumatology Department of Lille University Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Disc-related sciatica is a frequent condition. Most cases of sciatica evolve favorably. Although several randomized controlled trials have reported that surgery is more effective than conservative management in the short-term, no significant differences in pain or functional disability have been reported in the longer term. As such, discounting complications requiring urgent intervention, surgery is generally only performed in patients in whom medical treatment has failed. Our objective was to determine the rate and predictive factors of surgical treatment one year after in-hospita

Clinical, laboratory, and medication-related factors associated with in-hospital mortality among oncology patients at a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Oncology inpatients face physiological decline alongside complex pharmacology, yet clinical mortality predictors and drug-related risks remain understudied in Middle Eastern populations. This study identified independent predictors of in-hospital mortality and characterized potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs) among hospitalized cancer patients in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study evaluated 401 adult oncology inpatients admitted to a tertiary care center in Hail, Saudi Arabia (2020-2022). Demographics, clinical parameters, and medication profiles were extr

Hospital use by HIV patients in Italy: a retrospective longitudinal study. National Study Group on HIV-Related Hospital Use.

Hospital-based treatment for HIV patients consumes considerable health care resources, and for planning purposes it is important to know the hospital needs for each stage of infection. In this paper, we report the results of a national study in Italy on hospital stay for cohorts of patients hospitalized for the first time with HIV-related illnesses during the years 1984-86 and 1987-88. Using the Kaplan-Meier survival methods, we demonstrate a substantial decrease in the proportion of time spent in the hospital by patients newly diagnosed with AIDS (from 49% to 25%) in the latter study period.

Relation of Patient's Opinion of Alcohol's Health Effects and Drinking Habits Among Hospitalized Patients With Cardiovascular Disease.

Media reports frequently cite observational studies and meta-analyses to promote the reputed cardiovascular benefits of moderate alcohol consumption; however, it is unclear whether public opinion or drinking behavior align with these reports. We administered an anonymous, single-center, 35-question, cross-sectional survey among patients hospitalized for acute cardiac illnesses from June to September 2019, who were eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. We assessed patient opinions toward alcohol use, perceptions of alcohol's health impact, and role of media in forming these beliefs. We hypothesi

Collaboration Between Acute Care Hospitals and Nursing Homes for Dysphagia Management: A Comparative Study of Patients With and Without Pneumonia-Related Hospitalization.

Objective Although acute care hospitals address pneumonia through antibiotic therapy and provide in-hospital swallowing rehabilitation conducted by speech-language pathologists, post-discharge follow-up is often insufficient. In particular, limited attention is given to monitoring the recurrence of pneumonia and the status of oral intake once residents return to their nursing homes. The aim of this study was to determine the benefits of collaboration between acute care hospitals and nursing homes for dysphagia and whether swallowing tests are a predictor of the development of pneumonia.
