Regarding the ongoing global development of commercial ostrich husbandry, it is necessary to establish science-based recommendations for the appropriate treatment and welfare of ostriches. In this study, we determined the minimum housing area required for ostriches aged between 6 and 15 months. The planimetry revealed that the animals in this age group cover an average area of 0.31 m2 to 0.57 m2 with their bodies. To investigate the effects of space differences, the animals were divided into three groups and kept in 2.5 m2, 5 m2, and 10 m2 of available space per animal. When comparing their we

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of vector control and elimination of infected dogs on the incidence of infection with Leishmania chagasi. A randomized community intervention trial was carried out in Teresina between 1995 and 1996. The area was divided in 34 blocks randomically allocated to 4 types of intervention: 1) spraying houses and animal pens with insecticide; 2) spraying houses and eliminating infected dogs; 3) combination of spraying houses and animal pens, and eliminating infected dogs, and 4) only spraying houses. In comparison to blocks receiving only househol

BACKGROUND: The synanthropic house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae), is a mechanical vector of pathogens (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites), some of which cause serious diseases in humans and domestic animals. In the present study, a systematic review was done on the types and prevalence of human pathogens carried by the house fly.
METHODS: Major health-related electronic databases including PubMed, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and Science Direct were searched (Last update 31/11/2017) for relevant literature on pathogens that have been isolated from the house fly.
RESULTS:

Trichinella is a zoonotic parasite, which historically has been of large concern for public health in Europe. Consequently, testing of all pigs for Trichinella has been mandatory in many European countries, even though Trichinella is almost exclusively found in outdoor or backyard production. The idea therefore emerged that auditing for biosecurity should replace testing in indoor production. In the European Union (EU), pigs raised under so-called controlled housing conditions are exempt from testing. The specific requirements for a pig production to be considered a controlled housing holding

This study compared animal welfare outcomes in grazing and confined dairy systems. Eighteen farms (nine grazing and nine confined) were evaluated using 30 animal- and resource-based measures aggregated into 12 criteria and four welfare principles (0-100 scale): Good Feeding, Good Housing, Good Health, and Appropriate Behavior. No significant differences were detected for Good Feeding (75 vs. 76) or Good Health (32 vs. 34). Appropriate Behavior scores were lower in confined systems (16) than in grazing systems (34). For Good Housing, confidence intervals suggested higher scores in grazing syste

OBJECTIVE: Light exposure at night is known to produce behavioral aberrations in both human and animal models. One way to mimic light-at-night is through constant light exposure (LL), wherein animals are placed in an environment where a dark phase never occurs. Additionally, the type of housing condition for the rodents in experiments - grouped-housed vs singly-housed - can produce different behavioral responses, even in female mice. This study investigated whether LL produces alterations to emotionality and sociability, and whether group housing can alleviate some of those negative behavioral

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a common prelude to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Defining the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of NAFLD has been hampered by a lack of animal models that closely recapitulate the severe end of the disease spectrum in humans, including bridging hepatic fibrosis. Here we demonstrate that a novel experimental model employing thermoneutral housing, as opposed to standard housing, resulted in lower stress-driven production of corticosterone, augmented mouse proinflammatory immune

OBJECTIVE: To identify calf-related environmental reservoirs of Salmonella Dublin on 25 dairy farms with a history of endemic infection in the northeastern US. We hypothesized that maternity pens and calf housing areas were reservoirs of S Dublin on such farms.
METHODS: We used real-time PCR to detect Salmonella enterica in samples collected from dairy farm environments and subsequently cultured PCR-positive samples. All confirmed S Dublin isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing. A mixed-effects logistic regression model was used to evaluate

BACKGROUND: Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne infectious disease, caused by the protozoan Leishmania donovani, which is transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. In an earlier study in Bihar, India, we found an association between incidence of VL and housing conditions. In the current study we investigated the influence of housing structure and conditions in and around the house on the indoor abundance of Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector of VL in this area.
METHODS: In each of 50 study villages in Muzaffarpur district, we randomly selected 10 houses. Light traps were installed in

Individual consistency in behaviour, known as animal personality, and behavioural plasticity in response to environmental changes are important factors shaping individual behaviour. Correlations between them, called personality-dependent plasticity, indicate that personality can affect individual reactions to the environment. In farm animals this could impact the response to management changes or stressors but has not yet been investigated. Here we use ultra-wideband location sensors to measure personality and plasticity in the movement of 90 dairy calves for up to 56 days starting in small pa

Alopecia has been reported to occur in several species of captive NHP. Much of this research has focused on macaque monkeys; whether other primate species such as baboons are affected similarly is unknown. Because alopecia can be a focus of inspectors and a possible marker of wellbeing, the purpose of the current study was to survey the occurrence of alopecia in 2 baboon populations and to identify potential risk factors. Subjects were 262 group-housed and 279 corral-housed baboons. Alopecia was assessed cage-side (group-housed) and on sedated animals (corral-housed). Although alopecia was mil

Pigs in production systems are routinely exposed to challenging situations including abrupt weaning, painful husbandry procedures, intense contact with stockpeople, and exposure to novel social and physical environments. The resilience of pigs to these stressors has implications for animal welfare and productivity and can be affected by early life experiences. In rodents and primates, early experiences with stressors that the animal can adequately cope with confers future stress adaptability, leading to less abnormal behaviour, lower behavioural and physiological responses to stressors, and fa

The developing brain is vulnerable to ethanol intake and noise exposure, agents that adolescents are commonly exposed to. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether 2 weeks of ethanol, combined with intermediate noise exposure, can affect different behaviors, using an animal model. In addition, enriched environment housing was used as a neuroprotective strategy. Adolescent Wistar rats of both sexes were subjected to a 6-session voluntary two-bottle choice ethanol paradigm. A subgroup was exposed to noise for 2 h after Session 3, and some rats were housed in enriched cages. Open field, eleva

The effects of individual housing and other experimental design factors on body weight, survival, and tumor incidence in 72 control groups of B6C3F1 mice were evaluated. Individually housed males showed a greatly reduced incidence of dermal/subcutaneous tumors and an improved survival relative to group-housed animals. However, there were significant body weight increases in individually housed males and females and an associated marked increase in liver tumor incidence in both sexes and a lesser increase in lung neoplasms in males. Body weights of mice as young as 19 weeks of age were predicti

Respiratory monitoring, using impedance with implanted telemetry in socially housed animals, was not possible until the recent development of digital signal transmission. The objective of this study was to evaluate digital telemetry monitoring of cardiopulmonary parameters (respiratory rate, tidal volume, minute volume, electrocardiography (DII), systemic arterial blood pressure, physical activity, and body temperature) in conscious, single-housed, non-rodent species commonly used in toxicology studies following administration of positive/negative controls (saline, dexmedetomidine, morphine, a

The effects of the presence or absence of the pineal gland and of melatonin administration were examined on testicular maintenance, regression, and recrudescence in adult male rice rats. Pinealectomy at the beginning of the study caused significant testicular regression in animals housed on both long (16L:8D) and short (12L:12D) photoperiods (Experiment 1). Sham-operated males maintained testicular weight on 16L:8D and underwent testicular regression on 12L:12D. The magnitude of testicular regression in pinealectomized animals was reduced relative to that of sham-operated animals housed on a s

While the efficacy of pharmacological interventions to treat depression has been well-studied in animal models, much less work has been done to shed light on how changes in the immediate environment can impact behaviour. Furthermore, most studies have focused on male rodents despite the prevalence of mood disorders in women. In this study, 36 Wistar Kyoto (validated animal model of depression) and 36 Wistar (control) female rats were used to examine the effects of environmental manipulation on depressive- and anxiety-like behaviours. Animals were assigned to one of three groups: standard (3 ra

The scientific community needs objective measures to appropriately assess animal welfare. The study objective was to assess the impact of housing system on novel physiological and behavioral measurements of animal welfare for laying hens, including secretory and plasma Immunoglobulin (IgA; immune function), feather corticosterone (chronic stress), and attention bias testing (ABT; anxiety), in addition to the well-validated tonic immobility test (TI; fearfulness). To test this, 184 Bovan brown hens were housed in 28 conventional cages (3 birds/cage) and 4 enriched pens (25 birds/pen). Feces, bl

Ischaemic stroke presents a significant problem worldwide with no neuroprotective drugs available. Many of the failures in the search for neuroprotectants are attributed to failure to translate from pre-clinical models to humans, which has been combatted with rigorous pre-clinical stroke research guidelines. Here, we present post hoc analysis of a pre-clinical stroke trial, conducted using intraluminal filament transient middle cerebral artery occlusion in the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat, whereby unscheduled changes were implemented in the animal housing facility. These changes

In this study, we sought to discover if housing in an enriched environment (EE) is an efficacious intervention for encouraging abstinence from cocaine seeking in an animal "conflict" model of abstinence. Sixteen Long-Evans rats were trained in 3-h daily sessions to self-administer a cocaine solution (1 mg/kg/infusion) until each demonstrated a stable pattern of drug-seeking. Afterward, half were placed in EE cages equipped with toys, obstacles, and a running wheel, while the other half were given clean, standard laboratory housing. All rats then completed daily 30-min sessions during which the
