Physics-Informed Tensor Velocity Reconstruction From 2-D Velocity Estimates Using Row-Column Probes.

A method is presented for estimating 3-D velocity fields over space-time (tensor velocity fields) by combining 2-D velocity estimates acquired in multiple imaging planes with the continuity equation. The proposed tensor velocity estimator accurately reconstructs flow within the aliasing limit and mitigates motion-related artifacts observed in synthetic aperture (SA) and plane wave imaging (PWI) techniques, which typically reduce estimation accuracy at higher velocities. The estimator is demonstrated using both a short imaging sequence, which estimates the tensor velocity field in a thin volume

Segment anything in pathology images with natural language.

Segmenting tissues and cells in pathology images enables quantitative analysis but usually requires task-specific models or repeated spatial prompts. Here we show PathSegmentor, a foundation model that uses natural language descriptions to segment structures across anatomical regions and spatial scales. We assembled PathSeg from 21 public datasets, comprising 275,200 image-mask-label triples organized into a 3-level hierarchy of anatomical region, histological structure and object type. A single PathSegmentor model achieved the highest overall performance across 16 internal datasets and genera

Development of non-contact foreign body imaging base on photoacoustic signal intensity measurement.

BACKGROUND: It is challenging to visually identify tiny and concealed foreign objects within the body due to their small size and subcutaneous location while they can cause infections. METHODS: A non-contact photoacoustic system based on Rosencwaig-Gersho photoacoustic theory and dual modulator method is developed for detecting foreign objects in meat. RESULT: The experiments conducted validate the successful development of this measurement technique with 10 μm spatial resolution and its corresponding mathematical model, demonstrating an 11% Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) in compariso

MCAN: Multimodal Causal Adversarial Networks for Dynamic Effective Connectivity Learning From fMRI and EEG Data.

Dynamic effective connectivity (DEC) is the accumulation of effective connectivity in the time dimension, which can describe the continuous neural activities in the brain. Recently, learning DEC from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) data has attracted the attention of neuroinformatics researchers. However, the current methods fail to consider the gap between the fMRI and EEG modality, which can not precisely learn the DEC network from multimodal data. In this paper, we propose a multimodal causal adversarial network for DEC learning, named MCAN. The

Serp-Mamba: Advancing High-Resolution Retinal Vessel Segmentation With Selective State-Space Model.

Ultra-Wide-Field Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO) images capture high-resolution views of the retina with typically spanning 200 degrees. Accurate segmentation of vessels in UWF-SLO images is essential for detecting and diagnosing fundus disease. Recent studies highlight that Mamba's selective State Space Model (SSM) excels in modeling long-range dependencies with linear computational complexity, making it highly suitable for preserving the continuity of elongated vessel structures, especially for high-resolution UWF images. Inspired by this, we propose the Serpentine Mamba (Serp-Mamba)

C2BNet: A Deep Learning Architecture With Coupled Composite Backbone for Parasitic Egg Detection in Microscopic Images.

Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can facilitate automatic diagnosis and management of chronic diseases (e.g., intestinal parasitic infection) based on 2D microscopic images. To improve model performance of object detection challenged by microscopic image characteristics (e.g., focus failure, motion blur, and whether zoomed or not), we propose coupled composite backbone network (C2BNet) to execute parasitic egg detection using 2D microscopic images. In particular, the C2BNet backbone adopts a two-path structure-based backbone and leverages m

Text-guided cross-position attention for image analysis: Case of medical image.

In this study, we propose a novel text-guided cross-position attention module that aims to apply multimodality text and images to position attention in medical image segmentation. To match the dimension of the text feature to that of the image feature map, learnable parameters are multiplied by text features and combined with multimodal semantics via cross-attention. This allows the model to learn the dependencies between various text and image characteristics. The proposed model demonstrated superior performance in comparisons with other image-only or image-text data medical models. The modul

Wound Segmentation with U-Net Using a Dual Attention Mechanism and Transfer Learning.

Accurate wound segmentation is crucial for the precise diagnosis and treatment of various skin conditions through image analysis. In this paper, we introduce a novel dual attention U-Net model designed for precise wound segmentation. Our proposed architecture integrates two widely used deep learning models, VGG16 and U-Net, incorporating dual attention mechanisms to focus on relevant regions within the wound area. Initially trained on diabetic foot ulcer images, we fine-tuned the model to acute and chronic wound images and conducted a comprehensive comparison with other state-of-the-art models

Automatic Tumor Cellularity Measurement: AI-Based Pipeline for Multi-Organ Pathology Imaging.

Tumor Cellularity (TC) is an important metric for assessing organ tumor burden. However, manual cell counting is not feasible due to large volumes of pathology images and inconsistent measurements between pathologists. The PAIP 2023 Challenge aimed to solve this problem using AI. The challenge presented two main obstacles: the need to evaluate pancreas-trained data for effective use in the colon, and the common miscounting of clustered cells in segmentation results. To address these, we proposed a novel pipeline. It included channel normalization, which standardizes RGB values to ensure consis

Foundation models in gastrointestinal endoscopic AI: Impact of architecture, pre-training approach and data efficiency.

Pre-training deep learning models with large data sets of natural images, such as ImageNet, has become the standard for endoscopic image analysis. This approach is generally superior to training from scratch, due to the scarcity of high-quality medical imagery and labels. However, it is still unknown whether the learned features on natural imagery provide an optimal starting point for the downstream medical endoscopic imaging tasks. Intuitively, pre-training with imagery closer to the target domain could lead to better-suited feature representations. This study evaluates whether leveraging in-

MSEF-Net: Multi-scale edge fusion network for lumbosacral plexus segmentation with MR image.

Nerve damage of spine areas is a common cause of disability and paralysis. The lumbosacral plexus segmentation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans plays an important role in many computer-aided diagnoses and surgery of spinal nerve lesions. Due to the complex structure and low contrast of the lumbosacral plexus, it is difficult to delineate the regions of edges accurately. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-Scale Edge Fusion Network (MSEF-Net) to fully enhance the edge feature in the encoder and adaptively fuse multi-scale features in the decoder. Specifically, to highlight the

Enhanced colorectal gland segmentation through multi-scale attention and contextual feature fusion.

Histological image segmentation of colorectal cancer plays a crucial role in reliable cancer grading, prognosis evaluation, and treatment planning. Nevertheless, existing automated approaches often struggle due to fine-grained glandular structures, staining variations, acquisition differences across scanners and highly heterogeneous tissue morphology. To address these challenges, we propose MAC-Net, an enhanced deep learning model that integrates multi-scale feature fusion with attention-guided contextual decoding to achieve precise gland segmentation across diverse tumor differentiation stage

MFS-Unet: A Multi-Path Vision Mamba Network for Precise Thyroid Nodule Segmentation.

The automated segmentation of thyroid nodules from ultrasound images holds significant value in clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, achieving precise segmentation remains a substantial challenge due to issues such as blurred nodule boundaries, variable scales, image noise, and inaccurate annotations. To address these difficulties, this paper proposes a novel medical image segmentation network named MFS-Unet. The network introduces three innovative modules to enhance segmentation performance. First, we designed the multi-path vision mamba (MPV) module, which leverages the advantages of s

Causal spectral segmenter: counterfactual graph reasoning for weakly supervised pathology segmentation.

MOTIVATION: Weakly supervised pathology segmentation aims to alleviate the reliance on costly pixel-level annotations, yet remains challenging due to severe tissue heterogeneity, complex morphological patterns, and strong contextual confounding in histopathology images. Existing transformer-based methods often learn spurious correlations between lesions and surrounding tissues, while graph-based approaches tend to suffer from feature over-smoothing, resulting in degraded boundary delineation and localization accuracy. RESULTS: To address these challenges, we propose a novel Causal Spectral Se

AttriPrompter: Auto-Prompting With Attribute Semantics for Zero-Shot Nuclei Detection via Visual-Language Pre-Trained Models.

Large-scale visual-language pre-trained models (VLPMs) have demonstrated exceptional performance in downstream object detection through text prompts for natural scenes. However, their application to zero-shot nuclei detection on histopathology images remains relatively unexplored, mainly due to the significant gap between the characteristics of medical images and the web-originated text-image pairs used for pre-training. This paper aims to investigate the potential of the object-level VLPM, Grounded Language-Image Pre-training (GLIP), for zero-shot nuclei detection. Specifically, we propose an

Multistain multicompartment automatic segmentation in renal biopsies with thrombotic microangiopathies and other vasculopathies.

Automatic tissue segmentation is a necessary step for the bulk analysis of whole slide images (WSIs) from paraffin histology sections in kidney biopsies. However, existing models often fail to generalize across the main nephropathological staining methods and to capture the severe morphological distortions in arteries, arterioles, and glomeruli common in thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) or other vasculopathies. Therefore, we developed an automatic multi-staining segmentation pipeline covering six key compartments: Artery, Arteriole, Glomerulus, Cortex, Medulla, and Capsule/Other. This framewor

Rethinking masked image modelling for medical image representation.

Masked Image Modelling (MIM), a form of self-supervised learning, has garnered significant success in computer vision by improving image representations using unannotated data. Traditional MIMs typically employ a strategy of random sampling across the image. However, this random masking technique may not be ideally suited for medical imaging, which possesses distinct characteristics divergent from natural images. In medical imaging, particularly in pathology, disease-related features are often exceedingly sparse and localized, while the remaining regions appear normal and undifferentiated. Add

[Dynamic assessment of contrast medium enhancement in Doppler ultrasound imaging. Current status].

Findings in previous investigations have indicated that contrast-enhanced colour Doppler can be used to improve the demonstration of characteristic features of neovascularization in malignancies. However, the quantification of the increase in colour Doppler signals after Levovist in the cited study relied only on descriptive criteria defined by the investigator, resulting in a subjective scoring system. A computer-assisted method for quantitative analysis of colour pixel density is a novel approach for objective assessment of colour Doppler signal after contrast media administration. After mic

Automated boundary extraction of the spinal canal in MRI based on dynamic programming.

The spinal cord is the only communication link between the brain and the body. The abnormalities in it can lead to severe pain and sometimes to paralysis. Due to the growing gap between the number of available radiologists and the number of required radiologists, the need for computer-aided diagnosis and characterization is increasing. To ease this gap, we have developed a computer-aided diagnosis and characterization framework in lumbar spine that includes the spinal cord, vertebrae, and intervertebral discs. In this paper, we propose two spinal cord boundary extraction methods that fit into
