Pedigree analysis and inbreeding effects on calving traits in large dairy herds in Germany.

A pedigree analysis was carried out for a subset of the German Holstein population with respect to the effective number of founders and the ancestors with the highest effect on 2 defined reference populations. Reference population 1 contained animals born between 1998 and 2002 (n=19,537), and reference population 2 included animals born between 2003 and 2007 (n=19,060). The pedigree file included 73,946 animals in total. The effective number of founders was 111.3 and 92.8 in reference populations 1 and 2, respectively. In reference population 1, 52.22% of the gene pool could be explained by 10

Characterizing Runs of Homozygosity and Inbreeding in American Mink Using SNP Data and Pedigree Information.

Inbreeding increases the likelihood of deleterious recessive alleles becoming homozygous and consequently affecting economically important traits. Runs of homozygosity (ROH), the continuous homozygous segments of the genome and the higher than expected homozygosity (HOM) are genomic indicators of inbreeding, quantified as FROH and FHOM, respectively. Previous ROH analyses in American mink (Neogale vison) were restricted to scaffold-level references and could not resolve long autozygous segments. In this study, we characterized ROH in 1413 mink genotyped with the Affymetrix Mink 70K panel (50,9

Characterizing genome-wide changes associated with inbreeding tolerance in cranberry: insights into homozygosity and heterozygosity.

The American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is an important native North American fruit. Cranberry is a self-fertile woody perennial. As part of an ongoing breeding and genetics program, inbred lines have been developed to help understand the effects of inbreeding in cranberries and to develop near-homozygous lines. Self-pollination can lead to a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. As the effects propagate through generations, the loss of genetic diversity in offspring can cause reduced vigor, size of fruit and vegetative organs, and overall fitness. Our early observations suggested

An analysis of genetic diversity and inbreeding in Wuchereria bancrofti: implications for the spread and detection of drug resistance.

Estimates of genetic diversity in helminth infections of humans often have to rely on genotyping (immature) parasite transmission stages instead of adult worms. Here we analyse the results of one such study investigating a single polymorphic locus (a change at position 200 of the beta-tubulin gene) in microfilariae of the lymphatic filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti. The presence of this genetic change has been implicated in benzimidazole resistance in parasitic nematodes of farmed ruminants. Microfilariae were obtained from patients of three West African villages, two of which were sample

Inbreeding between Deep-Sea Snailfishes Careproctus pellucidus and Careproctus rastrinus in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean.

Genetic deviation between two deep-sea snailfishes, Careproctus pellucidus from the Pacific Ocean and Careproctus rastrinus from the Okhotsk Sea, of the Careproctus rastrinus species complex was analyzed, based on the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) gene. Our sampling revealed the occurrence of individuals with C. rastrinus-type Cytb genes off northeastern Japan, in the northwestern Pacific. Most of these individuals were collected from an area off Miyagi Prefecture, while few individuals were collected from areas to its north (off Iwate Prefecture) and south (off

Genetic Structure Analysis of the Pura Raza Español Horse Population through Partial Inbreeding Coefficient Estimation.

The aim of this work was to analyze genetic parameters such as the inbreeding coefficient (F), relatedness coefficient (AR) and partial inbreeding coefficient (Fij) of the whole PRE population, and the ancestors which account for 50% of the total genetic variability of the current population, from genealogical information. The average F of the whole PRE population (328,706 animals) has decreased from 8.45% to 7.51% in the least 20 years. The Fij was estimated for the whole PRE population, resulting in a database of 58,772,533 records containing one record for each Fij that each animal receives

Selection with inbreeding control in simulated young bull schemes for local dairy cattle breeds.

Local breeds are rarely subject to modern selection techniques; however, selection programs will be required if local breeds are to remain a viable livelihood option for farmers. Selection in small populations needs to take into account accurate inbreeding control. Optimum contribution selection (OCS) is efficient in controlling inbreeding and maximizes genetic gain. The current paper investigates genetic progress in simulated dairy cattle populations from 500 to 6,000 cows undergoing young bull selection schemes with OCS compared with truncation selection (TS) at an annual inbreeding rate of

Inbreeding increases susceptibility to powdery mildew (Oidium neolycopersici) infestation in horsenettle (Solanum carolinense L).

BACKGROUND: While Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) is widely recognized for its physical and mental health benefits, its mindful components are often overlooked in traditional training. Mindfulness-enhanced Tai Chi Chuan (MTCC) has been proposed to address this limitation, yet little research has explored its long-term impact on exercise motivation and physical fitness. This study extends previous findings by investigating the sustained effects of a 24-week MTCC intervention in improving physical and mental health outcomes among college students, with a focus on long-term sustainability and motivation main

Computational Identification of Genetic Background of Infertility and Calculating Inbreeding Coefficient in Dromedary Camel Herds.

Background: Inbreeding is a major genetic problem that reduces fertility and causes genetic disorders. Some breeders of dromedary camels use the same bull for many years due to its excellent characteristics, leading to mating with offspring and subsequent generations, resulting in increased homozygosity and genetic disorders. We hypothesize that inbreeding is associated with infertility in dromedary camels with normal and uninfected reproductive tracts. Methods: We genotyped 96 samples from seven camel breeds using the Illumina 55K SNP BeadChip, including five confirmed infertile individuals.

Genome-wide mapping and estimation of inbreeding depression of semen quality traits in a cattle population.

Inbreeding depression is known to affect quantitative traits such as male fertility and sperm quality, but the genetic basis for these associations is poorly understood. Most studies have been limited to examining how pedigree- or marker-derived genome-wide autozygosity is associated with quantitative phenotypes. In this study, we analyzed possible associations of genetic features of inbreeding depression with percentage of live spermatozoa and total number of spermatozoa in 19,720 ejaculates obtained from 554 Austrian Fleckvieh bulls during routine artificial insemination programs. Genome-wid

The inbreeding of the Y and the Z strains of Praomys natalensis with special reference to the laboratory uses of the Mastomys.

The Y and the Z strains of Praomys natalensis (Mastomys) are being sucessfully inbred, as far as is known for the first time. Spontaneous tumours of the glandular stomach have been found to develop in these rodents. Evidence is provided of the great potential of the laboratory Mastomys for use in medical research on cancer, plague, bilhaziasis, and more recently in the research on the Lassa fever virus.

Microsatellite-based assessment of genetic diversity and inbreeding in the Ukrainian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) population.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The Ukrainian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) represents a small, geographically isolated population with limited genetic characterization. Such demographic constraints increase the risk of reduced genetic variability and inbreeding, potentially compromising long-term sustainability. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and allelic structure of the Ukrainian water buffalo population using standardized microsatellite markers recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization-International Society for Animal Genetics (FAO-ISAG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total

Assessment of runs of homozygosity islands and estimates of genomic inbreeding in Gyr (Bos indicus) dairy cattle.

BACKGROUND: Runs of homozygosity (ROH) are continuous homozygous segments of the DNA sequence. They have been applied to quantify individual autozygosity and used as a potential inbreeding measure in livestock species. The aim of the present study was (i) to investigate genome-wide autozygosity to identify and characterize ROH patterns in Gyr dairy cattle genome; (ii) identify ROH islands for gene content and enrichment in segments shared by more than 50% of the samples, and (iii) compare estimates of molecular inbreeding calculated from ROH (FROH), genomic relationship matrix approach (FGRM)

Inbreeding among Caribbean Hispanics from the Dominican Republic and its effects on risk of Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND: Inbreeding can be associated with a modification of disease risk due to excess homozygosity of recessive alleles affecting a wide range of phenotypes. We estimated the inbreeding coefficient in Caribbean Hispanics and examined its effects on risk of late-onset Alzheimer disease. METHODS: The inbreeding coefficient was calculated in 3,392 subjects (1,451 late-onset Alzheimer disease patients and 1,941 age-matched healthy controls) of Caribbean Hispanic ancestry using 177,997 nearly independent single-nucleotide polymorphisms from genome-wide array. The inbreeding coefficient was es

Inbreeding and reproduction in endangered ungulates: preservation of genetic variation through the Organization of Genetic Resource Banks.

There is a constant increase in the number of species suffering marked reductions in population size. This reduction in size and the lack of genetic flow may lead to a decrease in genetic variability and to matings between close relatives (i.e. inbreeding) with an ensuing reduction in fitness. It is thus important to understand the mechanism underlying the deleterious effects of inbreeding and to develop reproductive biotechnologies that will allow the reduction of inbreeding depression by facilitating gene exchange between populations. The study of three endangered species of gazelles, Cuvier

The role of infectious disease, inbreeding and mating preferences in maintaining MHC genetic diversity: an experimental test.

In house mice, and probably most mammals, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) gene products influence both immune recognition and individual odours in an allele-specific fashion. Although it is generally assumed that some form of pathogen-driven balancing selection is responsible for the unprecedented genetic diversity of MHC genes, the MHC-based mating preferences observed in house mice are sufficient to account for the genetic diversity of MHC genes found in this and other vertebrates. These MHC disassortative mating preferences are completely consistent with the conventional view that pa
