Systematic review of hospital-based interventions to improve post-stroke independence in activities of daily living.

INTRODUCTION: Early after stroke, inpatients commonly experience difficulty performing activities of daily living (ADL). Occupational therapists are key to providing early rehabilitation to optimise recovery. However, the effectiveness of early, activity-based retraining of ADLs is not clear. The aim of this systematic scoping review is to determine whether activity-based retraining targeting basic activities of daily living (b-ADL) and/or simple cognitive instrumental activities of daily living (C-IADL) delivered early after stroke improves functional independence. METHODS: MEDLINE, CINAHL,

Examination of Factors Related to Kinesiophobia in Individuals Living in Nursing Homes: Pain, Independence, and Life Satisfaction.

This study examined the relationships among kinesiophobia, pain, independence in activities of daily living (ADL), and life satisfaction in 125 residents of nursing homes. Standardized scales were used to assess kinesiophobia, pain, ADL independence, and life satisfaction. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that kinesiophobia was positively correlated with pain (r = 0.764, p < .001) and negatively correlated with ADL independence (r =  -0.772, p < .001) and life satisfaction (r =  -0.681, p < .001). Multiple regression analysis showed that pain (β = 0.47, p < .001), reduced ADL independenc

Characteristics and factors associated with independence in the activities of daily living of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at diagnosis.

[Purpose] To investigate the characteristics and factors associated with independence in the activities of daily living in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at diagnosis based on clinical phenotypes. [Participants and Methods] Fifty-seven participants diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis were assessed using the Barthel Index. Participants were classified into three clinical phenotypes (bulbar-onset, upper limb-onset, and lower limb-onset), and the total and subitem scores were compared. To statistically examine factors associated with independence in the activities of daily l

Serotype-Independent Protection Against Invasive Pneumococcal Infections Conferred by Live Vaccine With lgt Deletion.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common respiratory bacterial pathogen among cases of community-acquired infection in young children, older adults, and individuals with underlying medical conditions. Although capsular polysaccharide-based pneumococcal vaccines have contributed to significant decrease in invasive pneumococcal infections, these vaccines have some limitations, including limited serotype coverage, lack of effective mucosal antibody responses, and high costs. In this study, we investigated the safety and immunogenicity of a live, whole-cell pneumococcal vaccine constructed by d

Reliability and Validity of the Floor Transfer Test as a Measure of Readiness for Independent Living Among Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The ability to get up from the floor after a fall is a basic skill required for functional independence. Consequently, the inability to safely get down to and up from the floor or to perform a floor transfer (FT) may indicate decreased mobility and/or increased frailty. A reliable and valid test of FT ability is a critical part of the clinical decision-making process. The FT test is a simple, performance-based test that can be administered quickly and easily to determine a patient's ability to safely and successfully get down and up from the floor using any movement str

For whom is a health-promoting intervention effective? Predictive factors for performing activities of daily living independently.

BACKGROUND: Health-promoting interventions tailored to support older persons to remain in their homes, so-called "ageing in place" is important for supporting or improving their health. The health-promoting programme "Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone," (EPRZ) was set up for this purpose and has shown positive results for maintaining independence in activities of daily living for older persons 80 years and above at 1- and 2 year follow-ups. The aim of this study was to explore factors for maintaining independence in the EPRZ health-promoting programme. METHODS: Total of 459 participants in the

Live attenuated Streptococcus pneumoniae strains induce serotype-independent mucosal and systemic protection in mice.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important human pathogen causing both mucosal (otitis media and pneumonia) and systemic (sepsis and meningitis) diseases. Due to increasing rates of antibiotic resistance, there is an urgent need to improve prevention of pneumococcal disease. Two currently licensed vaccines have been successful in reducing pneumococcal disease, but there are limitations with their use and effectiveness. Another approach for prevention is the use of live attenuated vaccines. Here we investigate the safety and protection induced by live attenuated strains of S. pneumoniae containin

Evaluating behavioral techniques in training individuals with severe and profound mental retardation to use functional independent living skills.

Three treatment approaches were evaluated for functional skill acquisition in individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. The control condition comprised the standard treatment protocol: verbal prompting, modeling, and physical guidance. The first condition added the components of staff training, feedback, and edible reinforcement for clients. The second treatment condition supplemented the first by the addition of verbal and edible reinforcement for staff. Subjects included 30 residents from a large developmental center (Pinecrest) in central Louisiana. The control protocol prove

INTRODUCTION: Arthritis is a common diagnosis for people presenting to healthcare reporting joint pain and stiffness. It is estimated that around 10 million people in the United Kingdom are thought to have arthritis. National Guidance states that patients with osteoarthritis should be offered three core treatments: information, exercise and weight loss advice. The Osteoarthritis Self-management and Independent-living Support (OASIS) group is a programme of progressive exercise and educational advice. METHODS: This service evaluation was to determine if the OASIS group was improving functional

Findings of a Pilot Study Investigating the Effects of Mediterranean Diet and Aerobic Exercise on Cognition in Cognitively Healthy Older People Living Independently within Aged-Care Facilities: The Lifestyle Intervention in Independent Living Aged Care (LIILAC) Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease are more prevalent in our aging population. Modifiable risk factors, such as diet and sedentary lifestyle, have been proposed as key to potentially ameliorating cognitive decline. Both exercise and Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) have been linked to reduced levels of cardiovascular disease and other comorbidities. Higher levels of exercise and MedDiet adherence may prove to be cognitively protective, both individually and synergistically. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to investigate the effect of a 6-mo program of MedDiet, exercise, and a combination

Grip Force Coordination as a Determinant of Independence in Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living in Incomplete Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report.

Upper limb rehabilitation for individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) primarily emphasizes strengthening residual muscles to enable grasping through the tenodesis action. While this approach is essential for achieving basic activities of daily living (ADLs), smooth object manipulation and fine motor performance require not only muscle strength but also the ability to regulate grip force. However, grip force modulation during tenodesis-based grasping has rarely been evaluated or specifically targeted in rehabilitation for cervical SCI. We report the case of a right-handed man in his

Variables associated with self- and proxy-perceived difficulties in independent living for patients with bipolar disorder and comorbid dementia.

BACKGROUND: Identifying variables associated with difficulties in independent living may help optimize intervention, as only 50% of individuals with bipolar disorder alone achieve residential independence. This proportion may be further reduced when bipolar disorder is complicated by comorbid dementia. However, evidence in this complex population remains limited, and existing studies have primarily focused on variables associated with independent living ability or performance, leaving those of perceived difficulties unknown. AIM: This study examined variables associated with perceived difficu

A comparison of behavioral techniques to teach functional independent-living skills to individuals with severe and profound mental retardation.

The efficacy of two treatment approaches was compared for functional skill acquisition in individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. Participants included 22 residents from a large developmental center (Pinecrest) in central Louisiana. Treatment including staff training, feedback, and edible reinforcement in addition to prompting, modeling, and physical guidance was more effective than prompting, modeling, and physical guidance alone. Additionally, daily documentation of teaching did not enhance treatment effectiveness. Implications of the findings are discussed.
