Study on the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in Indonesia: a review.

Congenital toxoplasmosis has been confirmed in Indonesia. Many newborn children in Indonesia have congenital anomalies attributable to Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite is widespread, with seroprevalence rates of 2-63% in humans, 35-73% in cats, 75% in dogs, 11-36% in pigs, 11-61% in goats, and less than 10% in cows. The prevalence of Toxoplasma antibodies in pregnant women in the Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta is 14.3%, and in 50 abortions it is 67.8%. In patients with a history of one or more abortions or stillbirths, the prevalence is 21.5% and 22.8%, respectively. No significant d

Studies on Japanese encephalitis vectors in Indonesia.

Entomologic surveys indicated that JE vectors in Indonesia are Cx. tritaeniorhyncus and Cx. gelidus. In most study areas, the former were predominant among all the culicine mosquitoes. The seasonal abundance of the two JE vector species was correlated significantly with the rainfall. The virus activity was parallel to the seasonal fluctuation of the vectors suggesting that the transmission of the disease would depend on the population dynamics of the vectors.

Acute diarrhoeal disease in India and Indonesia.

Acute diarrhoea is still a leading cause of child mortality and morbidity, second only to pneumonia as a killer of children, in India and Indonesia. Untreated diarrhoea precipitates malnutrition and is often the underlying cause of marasmus and kwashiorkor. Shigella and salmonella dysenteries are responsible for about 60% of all cases in Indonesia and India. These bacillary agents respond well to trimethoprim. Amoebiasis responds well to metronidazole. Most cases can be managed in the home, even if the exact cause is unknown, by giving liquids or a simple rehydration drink. Diarrhoea can be pr

A Consensus for Pituitary Adenoma Diagnosis in Indonesia.

Pituitary adenomas account for 10 to 15% of all intracranial masses and are the most common type of pituitary disorder. Their clinical manifestations can vary based on the tumor size and whether they secrete excess hormones. Occasionally, they are incidentally diagnosed following an imaging procedure for other indications (pituitary incidentaloma). The Pituitary Working Group of the Indonesian Society of Endocrinology has identified pituitary adenoma as a priority and has called for the development of updated evidence-based practice guidelines. These guidelines aim to provide evidence-based, c

Family with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in Indonesia.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterised by mucocutaneous pigmentation, gastrointestinal polyps and an increased risk of gastrointestinal and other cancers. We report an Indonesian woman, aged 28, with black spots on her lips who had multiple polyps extending from the stomach to the rectum. Her father and a son also had mucocutaneous lesions but they did not undergo gastrointestinal investigations. All three had mutations in the serine/threonine kinase 11 gene (STK11).

Multicentre survey of retinopathy of prematurity in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is higher in Indonesia than in high-income countries. In order to reduce the incidence of the disease, a protocol on preventing, screening and treating ROP was published in Indonesia in 2010. To assist the practical implementation of the protocol, meetings were held in all Indonesia regions, calling attention to the high incidence of ROP and the methods to reduce it. In addition, national health insurance was introduced in 2014, making ROP screening and treatment accessible to more infants. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the introd

Factors Associated With Quitting Smoking in Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with quitting smoking in Indonesia. METHODS: Data on 11 115 individuals from the fifth wave of the Indonesia Family Life Survey were analyzed. Quitting smoking was the main outcome, defined as smoking status based on the answer to the question "do you still habitually (smoke cigarettes/smoke a pipe/use chewing tobacco) or have you totally quit?" Logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with successful attempts to quit smoking. RESULTS: The prevalence of quitting smoking was 12.3%. The odds of success

Emergence of Melioidosis in Indonesia and Today's Challenges.

A recent modeling study estimated that there could be as many as 20,000 human melioidosis cases per year in Indonesia, with around 10,000 potential deaths annually. Nonetheless, the true burden of melioidosis in Indonesia is still unknown. The Indonesia Melioidosis Network was formed during the first melioidosis workshop in 2017. Here, we reviewed 101 melioidosis cases (99 human and two animal cases) previously reported and described an additional 45 human melioidosis cases. All 146 culture-confirmed cases were found in Sumatra (n = 15), Java (n = 104), Kalimantan (n = 15), Sulawesi (n = 11) a

Eradicating smallpox in Indonesia: the archipelagic challenge.

From 1804 to 1974, the colonial Dutch East Indies government and the postcolonial Indonesian state attempted to tackle the problem of smallpox. The vaccination efforts in the colonial era virtually eliminated smallpox by 1940. Unfortunately, as a consequence of the war smallpox was reintroduced into the archipelago in 1947. Indonesia finally succeeded in eradicating smallpox in 1974 through campaigns of mass vaccination and surveillance. In the last few years of the fight against smallpox, a detection system was set up in order to have every suspected case of smallpox isolated and investigated

Burden of severe rotavirus diarrhea in indonesia.

Globally, rotavirus is the leading cause of diarrhea-related hospitalizations and deaths among young children, but the burden of rotavirus disease in Indonesia is poorly documented. From January through December 2006, we conducted prospective surveillance (inpatient and outpatient) among children aged <5 years at 6 hospitals in 6 provinces of Indonesia, using standardized methodology. Of 2240 enrolled children hospitalized for diarrhea, 1345 (60%) were rotavirus positive. Of 176 children enrolled in outpatient clinics in 3 hospitals, 73 (41%) were rotavirus positive. Among children hospitalize

Challenges for control of taeniasis/cysticercosis in Indonesia.

Taeniasis/cysticercosis has been reported from several provinces of Indonesia: Papua (=former Irian Jaya), Bali, North Sumatra, East Nusa Tenggara, South East Sulawesi, Lampung, North Sulawesi, Jakarta, West Kalimantan, and East Java. The highest level of endemicity of taeniasis/cysticercosis has been found in Papua. Recent surveys in Jayawijaya District of Papua in 2000 and 2001 showed that 5 of 58 local people (8.6%) harbored the adult tapeworm, Taenia solium, whereas 44 of 96 people (45.8%), 50 of 71 pigs (70.4%), and 7 of 64 local dogs (10.9%) were seropositive for T. solium cysticercosis.

[The state of vector-borne diseases in Indonesia].

From epidemiological point of view, Indonesia is an extremely interesting area owing its insular structure and ecological, anthropological, cultural and economical diversity. As everywhere, vector-borne diseases are the result of complex and variable epidemiological systems, subject both to biogeographical rules and human activity. Two main arboviroses are present in Indonesia: dengue and Japanese encephalitis. Dengue appears as an endemoepidemic disease and is mostly circumscribed to urban areas. Haemorrhagic cases were first observed in 1968; since then, the incidence has been constantly inc

Another case of human gnathostomiasis in Indonesia.

A male Gnathostoma spinigerum was removed from the abdominal wall of a 29-year-old woman, who was in the habit of eating "naniura", a dish containing raw carp (Cyprinus carpio). After the removal of the worm she still had pain in her chest and noticed intermittent swelling of her right lower arm. Probably the patient still had one or more Gnathostoma worms migrating in her body.

Distribution and prevalence of cases of microfilaraemia in Indonesia.

Blood smear surveys were conducted in principal villages on the major islands of Indonesia to determine the microfilarial rates presently existing in the populations. A total of 163,454 persons were examined and 10.8 percent found positive for microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi or Brugia timori. The highest prevalence rates were found in Nusatenggara-Maluku-Irian Jaya (15.5%) followed by Sulawesi (13.7%) Kalimantan (10.8%) Sumatera (8.9%) and Jawa and Bali (1.7%). Many areas endemic for filariasis are used for the settlement of transmigrants from non-filarial endemic areas. C
