BACKGROUND: Mutations in the KRT6A or KRT16 gene cause pachyonychia congenita type 1 (PC-1), while mutations in KRT16 or KRT6C underlie focal palmoplantar keratoderma (FPPK). A new classification system of PC has been adopted based on the mutated gene. PC rarely presents the symptoms of diffuse plantar keratoderma. AIM: The aim of this study was to test a new collagen matrix (CM) aimed to increase keratinized gingiva/mucosa when compared with the free connective tissue graft (CTG).

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa simplex is a skin-blistering disorder caused by mutations in keratin (K)14 or K5. Treatment with nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 inducer sulforaphane ameliorated skin blistering in Krt14-null mice, correlating with induction of K17. To be therapeutically useful for epidermolysis bullosa simplex, topical broccoli sprout extract (BSE), enriched for sulforaphane, would ideally induce the expression of homologous keratins (eg, K6, K17, K16) in the basal layer of human epidermis without impacting expression of defective keratins (K5/K14).

The human keratin family comprises 54 members, 28 type I and 26 type II. Out of the 28 type I keratins, 17 are epithelial and 11 are hair keratins. Chronic feeding of ethanol to rats results in disorganization of the keratin intermediate filament network within hepatocytes. Signet-ring cell mesothelioma is uncommon and only two case reports have been published on this mesothelioma variant, both of which were initially misdiagnosed as signet-ring cell carcinoma. BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS), the most common subtype of EB, is usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait caused by mutations in either the keratin 5 (KRT5) or keratin 14 (KRT14) genes. Recessive EBS (R-EBS) is extremely rare.

Primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis (PLCA) is caused by the deposition of keratin amyloids in the skin and leads to severe symptoms. It is difficult to cure PLCA completely; therefore, prevention is essential.
