Interaction of High-Molecular Weight Fucoidan from Laminaria hyperborea with Natural Functions of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium.

Fucoidans are polysaccharides and constituents of cell walls of brown algae such as Laminaria hyperborea (LH). They exhibit promising effects regarding age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the safety of this compound needs to be assured. The focus of this study lies on influences of an LH fucoidan on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The high-molecular weight LH fucoidan Fuc1 was applied to primary porcine RPE cells, and a tetrazolium (MTT) cell viability assay was conducted. Further tests included a scratch assay to measure wound healing, Western blotting to measure expression

Does the hygroscopic property of the laminaria tent imply a risk for ascending infection in legal abortions? A microbiological study.

In 53 women admitted for first-trimester abortion, the cervical canal was dilated with laminaria tents prior to vacuum aspiration. Before insertion of the tents, endocervical specimens were taken for microbiological investigations, including Chlamydia trachomatis, and both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. The laminaria tents, widened by their hygroscopic properties, were removed just before the vacuum aspiration and sent for cultivation of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. The Gram-positive aerobic cocci, Staph. epidermidis, Strept. faecalis and Strept. agalactiae as well as Escherich

Fucoxanthin-chlorophyll a/c light-harvesting complexes of Laminaria saccharina: partial amino acid sequences and arrangement in thylakoid membranes.

The N-terminus of the major polypeptide component of the light-harvesting complex (LHC) from the brown alga Laminaria saccharina is blocked. Two partial sequences, one near the N-terminus and the other near the C-terminus, have been obtained by chemical cleavage with acetic acid and N-chlorosuccinimide. Four peptides were separated after trypsin digestion of the thylakoid membranes. One fragment is not phosphorylated, is not blocked, and has been sequenced. Purification on a reversed-phase column showed two forms of the LHC protein: the more hydrophobic form appears to be bound to photosystem

Role of external carbonic anhydrase in light-dependent alkalization by Fucus serratus L. and Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. (Phaeophyta).

It has been proposed that many marine macroalgae are able to utilize HCO 3 (-) for photosynthesis and growth, and that energy-dependent ion pumping is involved in this process. We have therefore studied the light-dependent alkalization of the surrounding medium by two species of marine macroscopic brown algae, Fucus serratus L. and Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. with the aim of investigating the role of extracellular carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1.) in the assimilation of inorganic carbon from the seawater medium. In particular, the influence of membrane-impermeable or slowly permeable carb

Impact of dietary Laminaria digitata with alginate lyase or carbohydrase mixture on nutrient digestibility and gut health of weaned piglets.

Laminaria digitata is a brown seaweed rich in prebiotic polysaccharides, mainly laminarin, but its alginate-rich cell wall could compromise nutrient access. Carbohydrase supplementation, such as individual alginate lyase and carbohydrases mixture (Rovabio® Excel AP), could enhance nutrient digestibility and prebiotic potential. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of these enzymes on nutrient digestibility and gut health of weaned piglets fed with 10% L. digitata. Diets did not affect growth performance (P > 0.05). The majority of the feed fractions had similar digestibility across all diet

Placement of laminaria tents does not improve time to delivery in patients undergoing second trimester labor induction with misoprostol.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether placement of laminaria tents improve time to delivery compared with misoprostol alone in second trimester labor induction. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients undergoing second trimester labor induction. Patients with ruptured membranes, abruption, cervical dilation and chorioamnionitis at presentation were excluded. Complications were defined as chorioamnionitis, retained placenta or other surgical procedures. Patients who received laminaria and vaginal misoprostol, 200 microg every 12 h, were compared to those who received misoprostol

Biotechnological upcycling of Laminaria japonica processing waste via Lactiplantibacillus plantarum fermentation: release and formation of antioxidant and tyrosinase-inhibitory compounds.

Laminaria japonica (L. japonica) is a valuable marine resource, and high-value utilization of its processing waste is of great significance. In this study, the waste was fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum to investigate its bioactivities and metabolic changes, aiming to provide a theoretical foundation and application potential for the development of natural antioxidants or functional food ingredients. The fermented extract (LJF) displayed strong antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. Specifically, LJF achieved an IC50 of 8.84 ± 0.04 mg/mL against tyrosinase under reversible

Laminaria japonica extract alleviates fine particulate matter-exacerbated allergic rhinitis by inhibiting NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis and restoring epithelial barrier function.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common chronic inflammatory disease, and environmental pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM2.5), is an important exacerbating factor that induces inflammation, disrupts the epithelial barrier, and triggers pyroptosis. Pyroptosis has been shown to play a critical role in epithelial damage and inflammatory responses. Therefore, regulating pyroptosis and repairing the epithelial barrier may provide new strategies for the treatment of AR. PURPOSE: Laminaria japonica has potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. We

Isolation of salt-tolerant Vibrio alginolyticus X511 for efficient co-production of 2,3-butanediol and alginate lyase from Laminaria japonica.

In order to establish an efficient microbial transformation platform based on seaweed feedstocks, experiments were performed to isolate a salt-tolerant strain capable of producing alginate lyase and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO). Its physiological and biochemical characteristics, carbon source utilization, and product synthesis capabilities were investigated, and then the process for co-producing alginate lyase and 2,3-BDO from Laminaria japonica was optimized. Results showed that the isolated strain was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus, which was capable of utilizing multiple carbon sources to p

Enhanced ileum function in weaned piglets via Laminaria digitata and alginate lyase dietary inclusion: A combined proteomics and metabolomics analysis.

Laminaria digitata, a brown seaweed with prebiotic properties, can potentially enhance the resilience of weaned piglets to nutritional distress. However, their cell wall polysaccharides elude digestion by monogastric animals' endogenous enzymes. In vitro studies suggest alginate lyase's ability to degrade such polysaccharides. This study aimed to assess the impact of a 10% dietary inclusion of L. digitata and alginate lyase supplementation on the ileum proteome and metabolome, adopting a hypothesis-generating approach. Findings indicated that control piglets escalated glucose usage as an enter

Laminaria extract reshapes the gut microbiota and TCA cycle-centered metabolic profiles associated with immune modulation in Hu lambs.

BACKGROUND: The global push to restrict antibiotic use in livestock has intensified the need for effective, safe feed additives, particularly for young lambs, which are highly susceptible to post-weaning diarrhea and immune dysfunction due to an underdeveloped intestinal barrier. Laminaria extract, rich in bioactive polysaccharides, has emerged as a promising candidate; however, its functional mechanisms in ruminants remain poorly understood. This study therefore investigated the effects of dietary Laminaria extract supplementation on growth performance, immune parameters, gut microbiota, and

Laminaria japonica polysaccharide alleviates type 2 diabetes by regulating the microbiota-gut-liver axis: A multi-omics mechanistic analysis.

The hypoglycemic effects of low-molecular-weight Laminaria japonica polysaccharide (LJO) were investigated in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) mice, focusing on its effect on the microbiome, metabolome, and transcriptome. The findings demonstrated that LJO significantly reduced fasting blood glucose levels, insulin levels, and inflammatory factors. Additionally, LJO induced changes in gut microbiota composition and increased the concentrations of cecal short-chain fatty acids. Analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics data revealed that LJO primarily altered the endocrine and digestive syste

Anti-obesity effects of Laminaria japonica fucoidan in high-fat diet-fed mice vary with the gut microbiota structure.

Previous studies have indicated that fucoidan could resist high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obesity by modulating the composition of gut microbiota. However, the outcome of dietary intervention may differ between individuals due to large inter-individual variability in gut microbiota. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the possible discrepancy of the anti-obesity effects of fucoidan supplementation in HFD-fed mice models with different gut microbiota communities. In the present study, the anti-obesity effects of fucoidan isolated from Laminaria japonica (FucLj) on normal mice and microbio
