Modeling the transmission dynamics of Ebola virus disease in Liberia.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) has erupted many times in some zones since it was first found in 1976. The 2014 EVD outbreak in West Africa is the largest ever, which has caused a large number of deaths and the most serious country is Liberia during the outbreak period. Based on the data released by World Health Organization and the actual transmission situations, we investigate the impact of different transmission routes on the EVD outbreak in Liberia and estimate the basic reproduction number R0 = 2.012 in the absence of effective control measures. Through sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, we

Evolution and Spread of Ebola Virus in Liberia, 2014-2015.

The 2013-present Western African Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak is the largest ever recorded with >28,000 reported cases. Ebola virus (EBOV) genome sequencing has played an important role throughout this outbreak; however, relatively few sequences have been determined from patients in Liberia, the second worst-affected country. Here, we report 140 EBOV genome sequences from the second wave of the Liberian outbreak and analyze them in combination with 782 previously published sequences from throughout the Western African outbreak. While multiple early introductions of EBOV to Liberia are ev

Trauma and humanitarian translation in Liberia: the tale of open mole.

The focus of this paper is the intercultural process through which Open Mole and trauma-related mental illnesses are brought together in the postconflict mental health encounter. In this paper, I explore the historical dimension of this process by reviewing the history of Open Mole, and the ways in which it has been interpreted, acted on, and objectified by external observers over the last half-century. Moving into Liberia's recent war and postconflict period, I examine the process by which Open Mole is transformed from a culture-bound disorder into a local idiom of trauma, and how it has beco

Volunteer experience of an American dietitian in Liberia, West Africa.

An American volunteer dietitian can make significant contributions in a developing country with the support of local personnel. Three objectives were achieved during a recent experience. The first objective was to become familiar with local foods and food customs and to revise the hospital diet manual to reflect Liberian food habits. Clinical observation of malnourished pediatric patients was the second objective, and this led to evaluation of the ELWA Hospital's kwashiorkor formula. The third objective was to provide in-service education to nurses and physicians at the ELWA and JFK Memorial H

[Lymphographic and morphological studies of the conjunctiva in onchocerciasis patients in Liberia].

Conjunctival lymphographies in patients infected with Onchocerca volvulus in Liberia showed normal or only slightly dilated lymphatics. The light-microscopical studies of conjunctival specimens revealed microfilariae predominantly in edematous dilated interstitial channels. Microfilariae in lymphatics and interstitial channels without endothelium of the conjunctivae were demonstrated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. No signs of inflammatory cellular reaction were found in the vicinity of the parasites. In conclusion, the dilatation of lymphatics and interstitial channels as we

Ocular onchocerciasis in a hyperendemic village in the rain forest of Liberia.

A sample of 76 persons in a hyperendemic village of onchocerciasis in the rain forest of Liberia was examined ophthalmologically. A reduced visual acuity of less than 6/18 was found in nearly 10%. Punctate keratitis was observed in 36%, microfilariae in the anterior chamber in 46%, proliferative chorioretinitis in 4% and optic atrophy in one person. The overall frequency of ocular onchocerciasis was 62%, but the severity of findings in most individuals was very minimal. The occurrence of microfilariae in the anterior chamber was positively correlated with microfilarial densities in the skin of

Preliminary epidemiological survey of schistosomiasis in central and southern Liberia.

Some basic epidemiological data on schistosomiasis in central and southern Liberia were collected. A study of snail density fluctuations was carried out in waterbodies bordering the road between Harbel and Gbarnga. Samples from schoolchildren living in ten selected villages were examined for Schistosoma spp. and other helminths. In the coastal region no snail hosts were found, the prevalence rates in schoolchildren were low and the infections were apparently imported. Inland, the intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium Bulinus globosus was common and the prevalence of urinary schistosomia

Epidemiological investigations of Bancroftian filariasis in the coastal zone Liberia.

A survey in 5 study areas along the Liberian coast was conducted to gain information on the prevalence and importance of bancroftian filariasis. The examination of 2675 persons revealed prevalence rates between 2% and 37%. The median microfilarial densities (MfD50) ranged from 5 to 24 microfilariae in 20 mm3 capillary blood taken between 20.30 hours and midnight. Catalytic curves fitted to age-specific infection rates were used to estimate incidence (1% to 3%) and recovery rates. It was extrapolated from the survey results that in a population of 71,0000 there are 16,0000 to 20,0000 infected w

Serologic Evidence of Hemorrhagic Fever Virus Spillover in Rural Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of zoonotic emerging infectious diseases, including viral hemorrhagic fevers, are increasing in frequency. Clinical detection remains challenging due to the lack of pathognomonic signs or symptoms and limited access to diagnostics. To better understand the prevalence of prior exposure to viral hemorrhagic fever viruses, serum from community participants in rural Liberia was tested for immunoglobulin G antibodies. METHODS: Serum collected from individuals enrolled in the ENABLE study, an observational study of Lassa fever virus incidence and seroprevalence, were analyzed

Health-Care Access during the Ebola Virus Epidemic in Liberia.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic, which began in West Africa in December 2013, claimed more than 11,000 lives, with more than 4,800 of these deaths occurring in Liberia. The epidemic had an additional effect of paralyzing the health-care systems in affected countries, which led to even greater mortality and morbidity. Little is known about the impact that the epidemic had on the provision of basic health care. During the period from March to May 2015, we undertook a nationwide, community-based survey to learn more about health-care access during the EVD epidemic in Liberia. A cluster sam

Cluster of Ebola Virus Disease, Bong and Montserrado Counties, Liberia.

Lack of trust in government-supported services after the death of a health care worker with symptoms of Ebola resulted in ongoing Ebola transmission in 2 Liberia counties. Ebola transmission was facilitated by attempts to avoid cremation of the deceased patient and delays in identifying and monitoring contacts.

Network power and mental health policy in post-war Liberia.

This article traces the influence of network power on mental health policy in Liberia, a low-income, post-conflict West African country. Based on key informant interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis, the work uses an inductive approach to uncover how a network of civil society groups, government officials, diasporans and international NGOs shaped the passage, implementation and revision of the country's 2009 and 2016 mental health policies. With relations rooted in ties of information, expertise, resources, commitment and personal connections, the network coalesced around a

COVID-19 reinfection in Liberia: Implication for improving disease surveillance.

COVID-19 remains a serious disruption to human health, social, and economic existence. Reinfection with the virus intensifies fears and raises more questions among countries, with few documented reports. This study investigated cases of COVID-19 reinfection using patients' laboratory test results between March 2020 and July 2021 in Liberia. Data obtained from Liberia's Ministry of Health COVID-19 surveillance was analyzed in Excel 365 and ArcGIS Pro 2.8.2. Results showed that with a median interval of 200 days (Range: 99-415), 13 out of 5,459 cases were identified and characterized as reinfect

Rabies control in Liberia: Joint efforts towards zero by 30.

Despite declaration as a national priority disease, dog rabies remains endemic in Liberia, with surveillance systems and disease control activities still developing. The objective of these initial efforts was to establish animal rabies diagnostics, foster collaboration between all rabies control stakeholders, and develop a short-term action plan with estimated costs for rabies control and elimination in Liberia. Four rabies diagnostic tests, the direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test, the direct immunohistochemical test (dRIT), the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay

Lateral Flow Immunoassays for Ebola Virus Disease Detection in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIs) are point-of-care diagnostic assays that are designed for single use outside a formal laboratory, with in-home pregnancy tests the best-known example of these tests. Although the LFI has some limitations over more-complex immunoassay procedures, such as reduced sensitivity and the potential for false-positive results when using complex sample matrices, the assay has the benefits of a rapid time to result and ease of use. These benefits make it an attractive option for obtaining rapid results in an austere environment. In an outbreak of any magnitude

Elimination of Ebola Virus Transmission in Liberia - September 3, 2015.

Following 42 days since the last Ebola virus disease (Ebola) patient was discharged from a Liberian Ebola treatment unit (ETU), September 3, 2015, marks the second time in a 4-month period that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Liberia free of Ebola virus transmission (1). The first confirmed Ebola cases in West Africa were identified in southeastern Guinea on March 23, 2014, and within 1 week, cases were identified and confirmed in Liberia (1). Since then, Liberia has reported 5,036 confirmed and probable Ebola cases and 4,808 Ebola-related deaths. The epidemic in Liberia peake

[Seroepidemiological aspects of onchocerciasis in Liberia, West Africa (author's transl)].

Sera of 1292 persons were examined for their antibodies to onchocercal antigen. The results were correlated with epidemiological data and microfilarial rates. They show that demonstration of antibodies is suitable for epidermiological studies although the frequency of antibodies does not increase in that degree like age and endemicity.

An Assessment of Anesthesia Capacity in Liberia: Opportunities for Rebuilding Post-Ebola.

BACKGROUND: The health system of Liberia, a low-income country in West Africa, was devastated by a civil war lasting from 1989 to 2003. Gains made in the post-war period were compromised by the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic. The already fragile health system experienced worsening of health indicators, including an estimated 111% increase in the country's maternal mortality rate post-Ebola. Access to safe surgery is necessary for improvement of these metrics, yet data on surgical and anesthesia capacity in Liberia post-Ebola are sparse. The aim of this study was to describe anesthesia capacity in Li

Assessment of heavy metals and microbial contamination of gari from Liberia.

Cassava is a staple mostly eaten in the form of gari, after rice in Liberia. The local method of gari processing often leads to product contamination, thus, a study was done to assess the heavy metals and microbial contamination of gari in eight counties of the country. A total of sixty-one gari samples were collected and packaged in an airtight polyethylene bag for analyses, using standard methods. Results depict that the mean of the heavy metals in the gari samples is iron (Fe) 43.87 ppm, copper (Cu) 0.94 ppm, zinc (Zn) 5.49 ppm and aluminum (Al) 257.45 ppm. Yellow gari had the highest Fe (6
