Prevalence and Associated Factors of Congenital Heart Disease in Cleft Lip and Palate Patients at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of congenital heart disease in patients with cleft lip and palate varies from place to place. There is a paucity of such studies in our region. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for congenital heart defects (CHD) in children with oral clefts at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. METHODOLOGY: This was a retrospective study of patients with cleft lip and palate who had echocardiography in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) from April 2012 to April 2022. Data were coll

Cleft lip-cleft palate in Zimbabwe: estimating the distribution of the surgical burden of disease using geographic information systems.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the prevalence and unmet need for cleft lip-cleft palate reconstructive surgery by using incidence. Our hypotheses were that the age of presentation to screening clinics will decrease between 2006 and 2012, and the geospatial distribution of cases will expand to a more rural catchment area. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cross-sectional/geospatial distribution study. METHODS: An online, secure database was created from intake forms for children with cleft lip-cleft palate (N=604) in Zimbabwe (2006-2012). Univariate analysis was completed. A linear regression mo

Effects of Pursed Lip Breathing on Exercise Capacity and Dyspnea in Patients With Interstitial Lung Disease: A RANDOMIZED, CROSSOVER STUDY.

BACKGROUND: Although mainly described in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pursed lip breathing (PLB) could prove useful in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) by improving exertional tachypnea and respiratory control. This prospective, randomized, crossover trial aimed at evaluating the impact of PLB on dyspnea and walking distance in ILD patients. METHODS: ILD patients with total lung capacity of <80% predicted were randomized to 6-min walk tests using either PLB or usual breathing. Patients were crossed over for the second 6-min walk tests and served as their o

A family with unusual Waardenburg syndrome type I (WSI), cleft lip (palate), and Hirschsprung disease is not linked to PAX 3.

An unusual family with Waardenburg syndrome type 1 (WSI), cleft lip (palate), and Hirschsprung disease is not linked to the PAX 3 gene since there is an obligate crossover which has occurred between PAX 3 DNA markers and the disorder in this family. This family may also have anticipation of the WSI traits as the proband's grandmother is nonpenetrant, his mother has dystopia canthorum, and severe cleft lip (palate), while the proband has dystopia canthorum, severe cleft lip (palate), and Hirschsprung disease. Thus, a locus other than PAX 3 is implicated in this Waardenburg-like syndrome with Hi

Control of repetitive lip and finger movements in Parkinson's disease: influence of external timing signals and simultaneous execution on motor performance.

This study addresses the question of whether external timing signals and/or simultaneous rhythmic movements of other limbs can alleviate sequencing motor deficits associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). Subjects performed rhythmic lip and finger movements simultaneously or in isolation. In addition, they had to self-pace their movements or match them to an external signal. Our results are summarized as follows: (1) Seven of 12 patients had adequate mean repetition rates; that is, they fulfilled the task requirements on a global scale. The remaining five patients had various degrees of hasten

Rare Variant of Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal Defect-cleft Lip/Cleft Palate Syndrome: Curly Hair-ankyloblepharon-nail Disease Syndrome.

Ankyloblepharon-ectodermal defect-cleft lip/cleft palate (AEC) syndrome is one of the variants of ectodermal dysplasia. It is an autosomal dominant disorder comprising of ankyloblepharon, ectodermal dysplasia, and cleft palate or cleft lip. In 1976, it wasfirst described by Hay and Wells, therefore also known as Hay-Wells syndrome. The characteristic feature of this syndrome is "ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum", which refers to the partial thickness fusion of the eyelid margins. The "curly hair-ankyloblepharon-nail disease (CHAND) syndrome" is a clinical variant of AEC syndrome. We report a

Lyprinol (stabilised lipid extract of New Zealand green-lipped mussel): a potential preventative treatment modality for inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Lyprinol (Pharmalink International), the stabilised lipid extract of the New Zealand green-lipped mussel, is currently used to relieve symptoms of arthritis. We investigated the effect of pretreatment with Lyprinol (LYP) on experimentally induced inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice (aged 6 weeks) were gavaged daily for 13 days with (150 microl) olive oil (OO; n = 7), fish oil (FO; n = 8), or LYP (n = 8). Mice consumed 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) for 6 days, starting on day 7. Body weight and disease activity index (DAI) scores were recorded dai

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Replication, Ocular Disease, and Reactivations from Latency Are Restricted Unilaterally after Inoculation of Virus into the Lip.

Ocular herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a consequence of viral reactivations from trigeminal ganglia (TG) and occurs almost exclusively in the same eye in humans. In our murine oro-ocular (OO) model, herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) inoculation in one side of the lip propagates virus to infect the ipsilateral TG. Replication here allows infection of the brainstem and infection of the contralateral TG. Interestingly, HSK was observed in our OO model only from the eye ipsilateral to the site of lip infection. Thus, unilateral restriction of HSV-1 may be due to differential kinetics of virus arriv

Congenital platelet disorder and type I von Willebrand disease presenting as prolonged bleeding after cleft lip and palate repair.

Cleft lip and palate can be associated with coagulopathy. Here, we report the first known case of congenital platelet disorder and von Willebrand disease presenting as prolonged bleeding after cleft lip and palate repair. After identifying the underlying pathology, platelet infusions and aminocaproic acid were given to decrease bleeding from a second surgical procedure. Whole exome sequencing identified a von Willebrand factor gene mutation, an adenine to guanine substitution at the c.475A location. A high index of suspicion should be had for coagulopathy in patients with syndromic cleft lip a

What Do the Lips Say in Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation? A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD) affects around half of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) recipients, with frequent involvement of the oral mucosa and lip vermillion, that clinically may resemble other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Our objectives were to define the dermoscopic patterns of lip vermilion in patients suffering from cGvHD and to compare the presentation with previously published dermoscopic presentations of other disease entities presenting on the lip vermillion. METHODS: A group of 16 patients diagnosed with cGvHD was

Burden, Trends and Projection of Lip and Oral Cavity Cancer in Central, Eastern and Western Europe: From the Global Burden of Disease 2023 Study.

BACKGROUND: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) remains a significant issue in Europe, with an uneven public health burden. While trends have shifted, regional and sex-specific disparities persist due to modifiable risk factors. Using Global Burden of Disease 1990 to 2023 estimates, this study evaluates long-term trends and projects Europe's future LOCC burden. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study data of 2023 were examined to evaluate the trends of incidence, prevalence, and mortality of LOCC in Central, Eastern, and Western Europe. We conducted a retrospective analysis of age-sta

Epigenomic landscape of the developing human rhombic lip reveals gene regulatory network and non-coding loci of developmental, evolutionary, and disease relevance.

The cerebellar rhombic lip neural progenitor niche of the prenatal hindbrain is an anatomical structure critical for cerebellar glutamatergic neurogenesis. Humans have elaborated the rhombic lip niche to include a rhombic lip subventricular zone (RL-SVZ) not seen in mice or macaques. Although developmental disruptions of this progenitor zone can cause cerebellar growth abnormalities - from malformations to tumors - the gene regulatory networks underpinning this unique progenitor niche are unknown. Here we provide a predicted gene regulatory network for the human cerebellar rhombic lip, inferre

The Evolving Epidemiology of Lip and Oral Cavity Cancers in Central Asia: A Global Burden of Disease Study Analysis (1990-2019) - A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Globally, geographic variation in lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) is significant, with high burdens in South Asia. We aimed to quantify the burden, trends, and risk factors of LOCC in the neighboring, yet epidemiologically distinct, Central Asian region. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study, we extracted age-standardized incidence, mortality, and Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) rates of LOCC for Central Asian countries. We analyzed trends using joinpoint regression to compute Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC) and assessed the assoc
