Liver transplantation (LT) provides the best long-term survival outcomes for patients with liver cancer. As a result, the field of transplant oncology has grown greatly over the past few decades, and many centers have expanded their criteria to allow increased access to LT for liver malignancies. Center-level guidelines and practices in transplant oncology significantly vary across the world, leading to debate regarding the best course of treatment for this patient population. An international consensus conference was convened by the International Liver Transplantation Society and the Internat

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NAFLD/NASH) is a major cause of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis and liver-related mortality. Despite emergence of noninvasive tests, liver biopsy remains the mainstay for the diagnosis and assessment of disease severity and chronicity. Accurate detection and quantification of liver fibrosis with architectural localization are essential for assessing the severity of NAFLD and its response to antifibrotic therapy in clinical trials. Conventional histological scoring systems for liver fibrosis are semiquantitative. Collagen proportionate are

The global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) changed dramatically all priorities on medical society and created several challenges for clinicians caring for patients with liver diseases. We performed a comprehensive review about how COVID-19 can affect the liver, the influence of liver diseases on the risk of developing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and COVID-19 severity and also some strategies to overcome all the challenges clinicians have to face in the management of patients with liver diseases in a period of time when all the focus turned on CO

Hepatocyte transplantation has not yet reached therapeutic status, as it has proven difficult to transplant a sufficient number of functional hepatocytes able to integrate and proliferate inside liver plates. It has recently been shown that whole livers can be decellularized by portal infusion of detergents, yielding a decellularized scaffold with a well preserved vascular network and specific liver matrix. Perfusion of different combinations of cells through the portal vein of these scaffolds results in reconstitution of a complete functional organ that can be transplanted in small animals. A

Fatty liver (i.e., hepatic lipidosis) is a prevalent metabolic disorder in dairy cows during the transition period, characterized by excess hepatic accumulation of triglyceride (TG), tissue dysfunction, and cell death. Detailed pathological changes, particularly hepatic fibrosis, during fatty liver remain to be determined. Liver fibrosis occurs as a consequence of liver damage, resulting from the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix, which distorts the architecture of the normal liver, compromising its normal synthetic and metabolic functions. Thus, we aimed to investigate liver fibr

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the value of liver biopsy in the evaluation of abnormal liver tests.
METHODS: We analyzed consecutive liver biopsy specimens performed for evaluation of unexplained abnormal liver tests from 2014 to 2018. Diagnoses were categorized histologically and clinically. We determined whether histologic examination led to a specific diagnosis and whether prebiopsy laboratory variables predicted the underlying etiology.
RESULTS: Among the 383 liver biopsy specimens included, chronic hepatitis was the most common histologic (25%) and clinical (17%) diagnosis. Liver biopsy

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic injuries to vital structures of the liver and posthepatectomy liver failure are associated with high mortality. The current donor situation in Norway allows liver transplantation of patients beyond conventional criteria.
METHODS: From 1984 to 2017, a total of 1510 liver transplantations were performed. In this retrospective study, we report the results of 13 patients undergoing liver transplantation due to iatrogenic injuries to the liver vasculature or posthepatectomy liver failure.
RESULTS: Twelve men and one woman with a median age of 55 years (range 22-69) were inc

INTRODUCTION: Heart disorders are one of the causes of death in cirrhotic patients.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate liver stiffness and liver function indices in liver fibrosis patients afflicted with electrocardiographic abnormalities.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: wo hundred patients entered this cross-sectional study. First, all of the patients underwent liver elastography. They were then divided into four groups based on the results obtained. Patients in three of the total groups (I-III) had fibrosis and those in the fourth group (IV) had cirrhosis. Afterward, electrocardiograms were

BACKGROUND: Organ shortage has resulted in greater emphasis on partial liver transplantation (PLT) as an alternative to whole-organ liver transplantation.
METHODS: This study was conducted to assess outcomes in PLT and to compare outcomes of deceased donor split-liver transplantation (DD-SLT) and live donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in adults transplanted in the USA using data reported to the United Network for Organ Sharing in the era of Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores.
RESULTS: Between 2002 and 2009, 2272 PLTs were performed in the USA; these represented 5.3% of all live

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2)-expressing macrophages and systemic levels of soluble TREM2 (sTREM2) appear critical in the development of chronic liver disease (CLD) and seem relevant in its detection. The aim of this study was to examine sTREM2 as a marker for early CLD and its potential to predict posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in patients undergoing partial hepatectomy.
METHODS: sTREM2 was assessed in the plasma of 108 patients undergoing liver resection. Blood was drawn prior to surgery (preop) and on the first and fifth postoperative day

In April 2023, the Japan Society of Hepatology published its official guidelines on liver rehabilitation for chronic liver disease. In this article, we summarize the current evidence on the role of liver rehabilitation in slowing the progression of chronic liver disease, particularly metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Specifically, we outline the following: (1) the definition of liver rehabilitation and its target population; (2) exercise therapy in liver rehabilitation according to disease state; (3) considera

Background/Objectives: Liver function is difficult to estimate accurately. Conventional liver function tests can be normal, even in severe diseases. Dynamic liver function tests, including indocyanine green (ICG) clearance and hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HBS), are useful in adults. We aimed to evaluate the association between ICG clearance and HBS in children with liver disease and to identify liver disease markers associated with liver function measured with ICG clearance and HBS. Methods: Children aged 0-18 years followed at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet between November 201

Steatotic liver disease (SLD) encompasses a spectrum of conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-related liver disease (MetALD), and alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), all of which may have consequences extending beyond the liver. Growing evidence suggests that SLD is associated with impaired skeletal health through a complex liver-bone axis. This review summarizes current evidence linking SLD with reduced bone mineral density, impaired bone quality, osteoporosis, and fracture risk. In MASLD, skeletal vulnerabil

INTRODUCTION: This case examines the sonographic and clinical challenge of diagnosing a Klebsiella pnumoniae pyogenic liver abscess with systemic metastatic infection.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient in this case study is an 81-year-old man who presented with intermittent rigors. Following radiological and clinical assessments, a Klebsiella pnumoniae pyogenic liver abscess, with evidence of systemic metastatic infection, was diagnosed. Sonographic features of the liver abscess were atypical for a cystic lesion and instead appeared as a solid mass, raising the possibility of malignancy. Treatmen

Hydatid cyst of the liver is a rare zoonotic disease in the United States. It is caused by Echinococcus granulosus. This disease is mainly seen among immigrants from countries where this parasite is endemic. Differential diagnoses of such lesions can include pyogenic or amebic abscesses, in addition to other benign or malignant lesions. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a hydatid cyst of the liver masquerading as a liver abscess. Microscopic and parasitological tests confirmed this diagnosis. The patient was treated a

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a common chronic liver disease with increasing incidence worldwide. Alcoholic liver steatosis/steatohepatitis can progress to liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, which can cause predisposition to hepatocellular carcinoma. ALD diagnosis and management are confounded by several challenges. Iron loading is a feature of ALD which can exacerbate alcohol-induced liver injury and promote ALD pathologic progression. Knowledge of the mechanisms that mediate liver iron loading can help identify cellular/molecular targets and thereby aid in designing adjunct diagnostic, pr

BACKGROUND: Following liver transplantation (LT), allograft liver failure can be developed by various causes and requires re-LT. Hence, this study aimed to clarify the characteristics and prognostic factors of patients with allograft liver failure awaiting deceased donor LT (DDLT) in Japan.
METHODS: Of the 2686 DDLT candidates in Japan between 2007 and 2016, 192 adult patients listed for re-LT were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Factors associated with waitlist mortality were assessed using the Cox proportional hazards model. The transplant-free survival probabilities were evaluated
