An exploration of the influence of educational placement on the community recreation and leisure patterns of children with developmental disabilities.

This study explored the recreation and leisure patterns of children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, 28 parents of children labeled "trainable mentally handicapped" were questioned about the type of sport, exercise, and social activities their children participated in as well as about the opportunities for social inclusion with nondisabled peers that these activities afforded their children. Analyses indicated that most of the children participated in segregated recreation and leisure activities. However, after adjusting for age, an analysis of covariance showed that childre

Career and Technical Education, Inclusion, and Postsecondary Outcomes for Students With Learning Disabilities.

We used longitudinal data from Washington State to investigate the relationships among career and technical education (CTE) enrollment, inclusion in general education, and high school and postsecondary outcomes for students with learning disabilities. We replicated earlier findings that students with learning disabilities who were enrolled in a "concentration" of CTE courses had higher rates of employment after graduation than observably similar students with learning disabilities who were enrolled in fewer CTE courses. We also found that students with learning disabilities who spent more time

How the Psychology of Education Contributes to Research With a Social Impact on the Education of Students With Special Needs: The Case of Successful Educational Actions.

One current challenge in the psychology of education is identifying the teaching strategies and learning contexts that best contribute to the learning of all students, especially those whose individual characteristics make their learning process more difficult, as is the case for students with special needs. One main theory in the psychology of education is the sociocultural approach to learning, which highlights the key role of interaction in children's learning. In the case of students with disabilities, this interactive understanding of learning is aligned with a social model of disability,

A Journey from Low Self-esteem to High Self-worth: Importance of Holistic Education for Children from Marginalised Sections.

Social inclusion is a process through which the marginalised sections of society are included in the mainstream of society. It is ironic that even in the 21st century, many sections of Indian society remain outside the mainstream. Factors such as poverty, ill health, homelessness and abuse are ubiquitous among marginalised children, who are also considered 'at risk' across both developed and developing nations. There is a crucial need for every child to be given the opportunity to be educated. Holistic education is influenced by the progressive educational movement (Dewey 2024, Democracy and e

Instructional conditions and stereotyped behavior: the function of prompts.

The relationship of instructional prompts to rate of task completion and stereotypy was studied in one adolescent student with autism and high-frequency stereotypic behavior. Using an ABAB design, one experiment was conducted which systematically examined the role of prompts on (a) task completion and (b) time engaged in stereotyped behavior. Results suggested that prompts had little effect on the rate of task completion across sessions but did reduce time spent in stereotypies. These results are discussed in relation to stereotypies and implications for intervention and instruction.

Supporting successful inclusive practices for learners with disabilities in high schools: a multisite, mixed method collective case study.

PURPOSE: The increase in the number of individuals with disabilities in general education has led to an increased interest in how to best provide support. Despite an emphasis on inclusion and participation in policy and practice, defining and describing the support provided for these learners is still an important task. METHOD: This multisite, mixed method collective case study reports on 125 education and other staff from seven schools who took part in interviews and focus groups to reflect on a range of topics related to learners with disabilities in high schools. We focused on what the par

The Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test (CAST): test-retest reliability in a high scoring sample.

The Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test (CAST) is a 37-item parental self-completion questionnaire designed to screen for high-functioning autism spectrum conditions in epidemiological research. The CAST has previously demonstrated good accuracy for use as a screening test, with high sensitivity in studies with primary school aged children in mainstream schools. This study aimed to investigate test-retest reliability of the CAST in a high scoring sample. To this end, 73 parents filled in the second CAST (CAST-2) within approximately 2 months of the first administration of the CAST (CAST-1). Agree
