National outbreak of Salmonella Give linked to a local food manufacturer in Malta, October 2016.

Salmonella Give is a rare serotype across Europe. In October 2016, a national outbreak of S. Give occurred in Malta. We describe the epidemiological, environmental, microbiological and veterinary investigations. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on human, food, environmental and veterinary isolates. Thirty-six human cases were reported between October and November 2016, 10 (28%) of whom required hospitalisation. Twenty-six (72%) cases were linked to four restaurants. S. Give was isolated from ready-to-eat antipasti served by three restaurants which were all supplied by the same local

The Human Nasal Microbiome: A Perspective Study During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in Malta.

The human respiratory tract is colonized by a complex microbial community that helps maintain respiratory health and plays a crucial role in defending the host from infections. Respiratory viruses have been demonstrated to alter microbiota composition, resulting in opportunistic species expansion, and increasing the disease severity and host susceptibility to bacterial co-infections. This study aims to examine the compositional differences in the nasal microbiota between SARS-CoV-2-infected and non-infected patients. We conducted Oxford Nanopore full-length 16S rRNA sequencing on nasal swabs f

Surveillance of wild polioviruses in patients with acute flaccid paralysis in Malta during 1998 and 1999.

Certification of global poliomyelitis eradication can only be accomplished when all countries have been certified as having achieved wild poliovirus eradication. In order to achieve certification of eradication of poliomyelitis in Malta an active acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance system comprising the whole population was set up. Surveillance became effective in January 1998. During 1998, there were nine reported cases of AFP (non-polio AFP rate: 2.38 per 100,000 population) two of whom were children under 15 years of age (non-polio AFP rate: 2.52 per 100,000 for the population aged <

Bacteriological and molecular characterization of B. melitensis isolated from aborted sheep and Malta fever patients.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases are a major global health concern, particularly those with high prevalence or widespread impact. Brucella melitensis, the causative agent of human brucellosis or undulant fever, is a highly virulent pathogen that is transmitted mainly through contact with infected animals or consumption of unpasteurized dairy products. The significance lies in its public health impact and economic burden in endemic regions. AIM: This study aimed to isolate and identify B. melitensis from human patients and sheep using conventional and molecular techniques, with the goal of tracki

Kala-azar in a four-year-old child 18 months after brief exposure in Malta.

A four-year-old Danish boy developed kala-azar 18 months after a holiday in Malta. Splenectomy, with liver biopsy, was performed six months after onset of symptoms because of hypersplenism, and the diagnosis of kala-azar was only made four months later, when the histopathological specimens were reviewed. Previous bone marrow biopsies did not show Leishmania. Treatment with sodium stibogluconate was successful. The development of kala-azar after one week's stay in an endemic area stresses the importance of including this potentially fatal disease in the differential diagnosis of cases presentin
