Etiopathogenesis of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws: a review.

This study compiles the main hypotheses involved in the etiopathogenesis of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). A narrative review of the literature was performed. The etiopathogenesis of MRONJ is multifactorial and not fully understood. The main hypothesis considers the disturbance of bone turnover caused by anti-resorptive drugs. Bisphosphonates and denosumab inhibit osteoclast activity through different action mechanisms, accumulating bone microfracture. Other hypotheses also consider oral infection and inflammation, the antiangiogenic effect and soft tissue toxicity of bis

Mild Pancreatitis Induced by Linagliptin Revealed by a Medication Review.

As dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors are becoming more utilized in the treatment of diabetes, it is important to recognize their side effects and become more familiar with them. As these side effects arise, physicians are more prepared to recognize and discontinue these medications. This case report describes a 34-year-old male who initially presented with a hemoglobin A1c greater than 16%. After titration of his diabetic medications, he presented with pancreatitis diagnosed by symptoms and imaging. Common causes of pancreatitis were ruled out, including biliary pathology, alcohol use, tobacco

Interventions to enhance medication adherence in pregnancy- a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sub-optimal medication adherence in pregnant women with chronic disease and pregnancy-related indications has the potential to adversely affect maternal and perinatal outcomes. Adherence to appropriate medications is advocated during and when planning pregnancy to reduce risk of adverse perinatal outcomes relating to chronic disease and pregnancy-related indications. We aimed to systematically identify effective interventions to promote medication adherence in women who are pregnant or planning to conceive and impact on perinatal, maternal disease-related and adherence outcomes. Genetic factors contribute to medication-induced QT prolongation: A review.

QT prolongation is a heart rhythm condition that impacts the lives of many people and when severe can be life-threatening. QT prolongation has been linked to variations in several genes, but it can also arise in the course of treatments with medications such as certain antipsychotics and antidepressants. However, it is unclear whether the risk of medication-induced QT prolongation (MIQTP) depends on specific genetic vulnerability. Here, we review the available literature on the interplay between genetic risk and medication exposure in the context of psychiatric treatment. A review was conducte

Medication-related dental implant failure: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the association between the intake of systemic medications that may affect bone metabolism and their subsequent impact on implant failures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Electronic and manual literature searches were conducted. Implant failure (IF) was the primary outcome, while biological/mechanical and the causes/timing associated with IF were set as secondary outcomes. Meta-analyses for the binary outcome IF and odds ratio were performed to investigate the association with medications. RESULTS: A final selection of 17 articles was s

Treatment of Diabetic Ketoacidosis Associated With Antipsychotic Medication: Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are associated with metabolic disturbances. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a rare, but potentially fatal sign of acute glucose metabolism dysregulation, which may be associated with the use of SGAs. This study aims to review published reports of patients with schizophrenia and antipsychotic drug-associated DKA, focusing on the effective management of both conditions. METHODS: Using a predefined search strategy, we searched PubMed and EMBASE from their inception to July 2016. The search terms were related to "diabetic ketoacidosis" and "a

Factors associated with antihypertensive medication non-adherence: a systematic review.

Non-adherence to antihypertensive medication is the most important cause of uncontrolled blood pressure and is influenced by multiple interrelating factors. Understanding the complexity of medication non-adherence and its associated factors is important to determine intervention strategies. Therefore, a systematic review was performed aimed to identify factors associated with antihypertensive medication non-adherence. Different databases were searched for observational studies reporting on factors associated with non-adherence to antihypertensive medication. Titles, abstracts and full texts we

The use of medication in selective mutism: a systematic review.

Despite limited evidence, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are used to reduce symptoms of selective mutism (SM) in children unresponsive to psychosocial interventions. We review existing evidence for the efficacy of these medications, limitations of the literature, and resulting treatment considerations. Bibliographic searches were conducted in Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Web of Science and Cochrane up to June 2015. Two reviewers independently sought studies of children with SM as primary psychiatric diagnosis, which reported response to m

Clinical review: Traumatic brain injury in patients receiving antiplatelet medication.

As the population ages, emergency physicians are confronted with a growing number of trauma patients receiving antithrombotic and antiplatelet medication prior to injury. In cases of traumatic brain injury, pre-injury treatment with anticoagulants has been associated with an increased risk of posttraumatic intracranial haemorrhage. Since high age itself is a well-recognised risk factor in traumatic brain injury, this population is at special risk for increased morbidity and mortality. The effects of antiplatelet medication on coagulation pathways in posttraumatic intracranial haemorrhage are n

Incidence and prevalence of medication-induced osteoporosis: evidence-based review.

(1) While a number of medications have been shown to induce bone loss, the actual incidence and prevalence of medication-induced osteoporosis has not been well quantified. (2) Oral corticosteroids contribute to an increased prevalence of osteoporosis and an increased incidence of fracture in a number of different populations. The increased incidence of fracture in patients receiving inhaled corticosteroids for respiratory disease may be attributed to disease pathogenesis rather than the effects of medication. (3) Other therapies that increase the incidence and/or prevalence of medication-induc

Self-medication with psychedelics: a scoping review and narrative synthesis of review-level evidence.

BACKGROUND: As public and scientific interest in psychedelics grows, unsupervised use for health purposes is increasing. In the U.S., past-year hallucinogen use nearly doubled from 2015 to 2023. Many individuals report self-treating physical or psychological symptoms without medical supervision using psychedelics-a practice termed self-medication. Despite this trend, review-level syntheses remain scarce. AIM: This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize review-level evidence on the self-medication of psychedelics, including which substances are used, for what health-related purposes, and w

Medication review interventions for adults living with advanced chronic kidney disease: A scoping review.

Structured medication reviews (SMRs) were introduced into the National Health Service (NHS) Primary Care to support the delivery of the NHS Long-Term Plan for medicines optimization. SMRs improve the quality of care, reduce harm and offer value for money. However, evidence to support SMRs for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage G4-5D with elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and premature mortality is unknown. This scoping review aimed to assess the extent and nature of SMR research in the population of patients with CKD stage G4-5D. Electronic databases were searched on 20 Oct

Mucormycosis medications: a patent review.

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycosis is an uncommon but life-threatening infection with nonspecific clinical manifestations that make its diagnosis/treatment difficult. The current literature indicates that mucormycosis case incidences are on the rise in developing and developed countries, and, unfortunately, there are only a few treatments available. Accordingly, it is essential to provide more treatment options for mucormycosis. AREA COVERED: This patent review focuses on the granted patents and patent applications related to medication for mucormycosis treatment from the publication year of the amph

Medications for COPD: a review of effectiveness.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common problem among patients presenting to primary care. This condition has multiple individual and combined treatment regimens. The goals of treatment are to improve quality of life, exercise tolerance, sleep quality, and survival; and to reduce dyspnea, nocturnal symptoms, exacerbations, use of rescue medications, and hospitalizations. All patients benefit from bronchodilator medications as needed. Long-acting inhaled anticholinergics are probably more beneficial than short-acting formulations. Use of inhaled corticosteroids might benefit pa

Priapism--a review of the medical management.

Priapism is characterised by the presence of prolonged, often painful penile erection in the absence of a sexual stimulus. This rare condition has a range of aetiologies, but is most common following self-administration of injection therapy for impotence. Priapism may be classified into high- and low-flow states. Low-flow priapism is an emergency ischaemic condition requiring prompt recognition and treatment to avoid devastating long-term complications of erectile dysfunction. Wide-ranging medical therapies are covered in this review. Diagnostic and treatment algorithms are suggested in light

A review of the toxicity of HIV medications.

Antiretroviral therapy has changed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection from a near-certainly fatal illness to one that can be managed chronically. More patients are taking antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) for longer periods of time, which naturally results in more observed toxicity. Overdose with ARVs is not commonly reported. The most serious overdose outcomes have been reported in neonates who were inadvertently administered supratherapeutic doses of HIV prophylaxis medications. Typical ARV regimens include a "backbone" of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) and a "bas

Depressogenic effects of medications: a review.

The literature is filled with reports that link medications with the onset or progression of depression. Because depression is so common in patients with medical illness, assessing whether a medication has in fact caused depression, or whether the relationship is coincidental, can be challenging. In this article, we review the literature on the association between medications and depression. For most agents, there are case reports or small studies linking the medication with the onset of depression, but more rigorous prospective studies are either lacking or found no association between the ag
