Health service engagement, side effects and concerns among men with anabolic-androgenic steroid use: a cross-sectional Norwegian study.

BACKGROUND: Recreational use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) is a public health concern world-wide associated with a range of physical and psychological side effects. Still, people who use AAS tend to be reluctant to seek treatment. This study aims to explore use characteristics, treatment-seeking behaviour, side effects and associated health concerns among men with AAS use. METHODS: The study includes cross-sectional self-report data from 90 men with a current or previous use of AAS exceeding 12 months, where 41 (45.6%) had sought treatment at least once during their lifetime, and 49 (

The relationship between childhood poverty, military service, and later life depression among men: Evidence from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood poverty has been associated with depression in adulthood, but whether this relationship extends to later life major depression (MD) or is modified by military service is unclear. METHODS: Data come from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) 2010 wave, a longitudinal, nationally representative study of older adults. Men with data on military service and childhood poverty were included (N=6330). Childhood poverty was assessed by four indicators (i.e., parental unemployment, residential instability) experienced before age 16. Military service was categorized as veteran vers

Indifferent, ambiguous, or proactive? Young men's discourses on health service utilization for Chlamydia trachomatis detection in Stockholm, Sweden: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) infection is the most commonly reported sexually transmitted infection in Sweden and globally. C. trachomatis is often asymptomatic and if left untreated, could cause severe reproductive health issues. In Sweden, men test for C. trachomatis to a lesser extent than women. AIM: To explore factors facilitating and constraining Swedish young men's health care utilization for C. trachomatis detection and treatment. METHOD: A qualitative situational analysis study including data from 18 semi-structured interviews with men (21-30 years). Data col

Understanding sexual health service access for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Ireland during the COVID-19 crisis: Findings from the EMERGE survey.

BACKGROUND: In the Republic of Ireland, the COVID-19 crisis led to sexual health service closures while clinical staff were redeployed to the pandemic response. Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) face pre-existing sexual health inequalities which may have been exacerbated. The aim of this study is to understand sexual health service accessibility for gbMSM in Ireland during the COVID-19 crisis. METHODS: EMERGE recruited 980 gbMSM in Ireland (June-July 2021) to an anonymous online survey investigating well-being and service access through geo-location sexual networking a

Polysubstance use and HIV/STD risk behavior among Massachusetts men who have sex with men accessing Department of Public Health mobile van services: implications for intervention development.

Polysubstance use has been posited to be a significant contributor to excess burden of HIV disease among men who have sex with men (MSM). The current study investigated polysubstance use and sexual risk among men who utilize Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) van services (such as HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis testing; Hepatitis A and B vaccinations) at venues targeting MSM. Participants (n = 214) completed a one-time, cross-sectional survey via an audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI) in English or Spanish between June 2007 and September 2007. Acceptability of HIV self-testing among sexual health service providers and Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, and queer men in Ontario, Canada.

In 2020, Health Canada approved the INSTI human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) self-test. Adoption and distribution of alternative HIV testing interventions, like self-testing, are essential in meeting the United Nations 95-95-95 goals. We explored the acceptability of HIV self-testing among sexual health service providers and Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, and queer men (2SGBQM). Between 2020 and 2021, peer researchers conducted virtual focus groups (13) and interviews (18) with providers (n = 18) and 2SGBQM (n = 38) across Ontario, Canada, and analysed data using community-based participatory rese

Missed opportunity: low uptake of VMMC among men attending the OPD of a public health facility offering free VMMC services in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Studies in various countries including Uganda and Kenya have shown a much lower incidence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men that underwent voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) compared to uncircumcised men. Wakiso district, the district with the highest prevalence of HIV in Uganda (7%), has a very low estimated proportion of men who have undergone VMMC (30.5%). Within the district, various public health facilities provide free VMMC services. This study examined the prevalence and factors associated with the uptake of VMMC among men attending the outpatient d

Estimating gonorrhoea prevalence in young heterosexual men and women attending community-based sexual health services to inform decisions on gonorrhoea testing.

In England, dual tests detecting chlamydia and gonorrhoea are used in specialist and community-based sexual health services (SHSs). Test performance is poor when prevalence is low, therefore UK national guidelines recommend against opportunistic gonorrhoea screening unless there is a clear local public health need. While surveillance data on gonorrhoea prevalence is comprehensive in specialist SHSs, it is sparse in community SHSs. We aimed to estimate gonorrhoea prevalence in heterosexual men and women aged 15-24 attending community SHSs to inform testing care pathways. We used linear and quad

Sexual orientation identity disparities in health behaviors, outcomes, and services use among men and women in the United States: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that sexual minorities (e.g., lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals) experience higher levels of discrimination, stigma, and stress and are at higher risk of some poor health outcomes and health behaviors compared to their heterosexual counterparts. However, the majority of studies have examined sexual orientation disparities in a narrow range of health outcomes and behaviors using convenience samples comprised of either men or women living in restricted geographic areas. METHODS: To investigate the relationship between sexual orientation identity and health among

The waiting room: Unmet sexual health service needs among men and gender-diverse individuals having sex with men in England, findings from an online, cross-sectional community survey in 2024.

BackgroundSexual health service (SHS) delivery in England shifted substantially with rapid expansion of online services during the COVID-19 pandemic. While digital services may improve reach, limited data exist on unmet need for in-person SHS in England, especially among men and gender-diverse individuals who have sex with men, key populations disproportionately affected by sexual health inequalities.MethodsWe analysed data from "Reducing inequalities in Sexual Health" (RiiSH) 2024 (Nov/Dec 2024), an online survey of UK-resident men and gender-diverse individuals having sex with men. We assess

Reframing the context of preventive health care services and prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections for young men: new opportunities to reduce racial/ethnic sexual health disparities.

Young Black males, aged 13 to 29 years, have the highest annual rates of HIV infections in the United States. Young Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are the only subgroup with significant increases in HIV incident infections in recent years. Black men, particularly MSM, are also disproportionately affected by other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, we must strengthen HIV and STI prevention opportunities during routine, preventive health care visits and at other, nontraditional venues accessed by young men of color, with inclusive, nonjudgmental approaches. The Affordable

Experiences of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis use among heterosexual men accessing sexual and reproductive health services in South Africa: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: South African men face a substantial burden of HIV and are less likely to test for HIV and initiate antiretroviral therapy if tested positive and more likely to die from AIDS-related causes than women. In addition to condoms and circumcision, guidelines provide for the use of daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as an HIV prevention intervention for any men who recognize their need and request PrEP. However, heterosexual men have not been a focus of PrEP programmes, and since its introduction, there is limited literature on PrEP use among men in South Africa. This study exp
