Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a global public health crisis that has steadily worsened despite significant efforts. Maladaptive opioid use can have significant negative impacts, yet a minority receive evidence-based treatments. Leveraging common personal technologies like smartphones and computers may help extend access to such services. The current study aims to describe the landscape of personal technology use in opioid use recovery by combining an academic scoping review with a review of commercially available smartphone apps and devices. The scoping review provides an overview of research e

This secondary analysis examined the association between preexisting mental health conditions and clinical recovery trajectories in adolescents with concussion. Adolescents (13-17; n = 1238) completed clinical assessments (Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory [PCSI] ≤48 hours postinjury; PCSI/ Pediatric Quality of Life [PedsQL] for 3 months) and were categorized into control, anxiety, depression, or combined anxiety/depression groups. Acute outcomes were analyzed using analysis of variance or χ2, whereas linear and logistic regression analyzed recovery trajectories. A main effect of group was pre

UNLABELLED: The mass traumatization of the population in Ukraine and numerous countries worldwide due to military actions, natural and artificial disasters, and violence creates challenges for the mental health care system, requiring evidence-based approaches to treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is recognized as a priority method of psychotherapeutic intervention for PTSD. However, the effectiveness of various CBT methods remains insufficiently studied regarding specific types of trauma and individual patient characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: This brief report presents the preliminary findings of a participatory project, to answer a question raised by stakeholders in mental health services: How can providers and patients create a process for knowledge exchange to support recovery-oriented care?
METHOD: Participatory action research (PAR) and narrative phenomenological methodology guided the selection of methods, which consisted of an iterative process between telling stories and dialoguing about personal values related to recovery. The sample consisted of three occupational therapists, a psychiatrist, an academic-clinic

OBJECTIVE: There is a dearth of longitudinal data on outcomes in prevalent cases of psychotic illness across a range of ages and levels of chronicity. Our aim was to describe changes over time in mental and physical health outcomes, as well as patterns of service utilisation that may have influenced outcomes, in a representative prevalence sample of 641 Western Australians with a psychotic illness who, at Wave 1, were part of the National Survey of High Impact Psychosis.
METHODS: In Wave 1 (2010, 2012), a two-phase design was employed to ensure representativeness: Phase 1 psychosis screening

This study explores young people's perceptions of citizenship and recovery for individuals with severe mental health challenges using the story completion method. In this qualitative approach, participants were invited to complete an open-ended story stem about a fictional character, Billie, whose journey of recovery unfolds through their narratives. We analyzed 47 stories, with lengths ranging from 65 to 598 words (M = 253 words), applying both horizontal (thematic) and vertical (narrative progression) analyses. The findings reveal that participants often framed Billie's recovery in terms of

This study was aimed at validating the Individual Recovery Outcomes Counter (I.ROC) for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and tinnitus patients in a mental health care setting. There is a need for an accessible instrument to monitor treatment effects in this population. The I.ROC measures recovery, seeing recovery as a process of experiencing a meaningful life, despite the limitations caused by illness or disability. A total of 84 adults referred to 2 specialist mental health centers for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and tinnitus adults in the Netherlands completed the Dutch version of I.ROC and 3 other instrum

BACKGROUND: Digital or video games are played by millions of adolescents and young adults around the world and are one of the technologies used by youths to access mental health services. Youths with mental health problems strongly endorse the use of technologies, including mobile and online platforms, to receive information, support their treatment journeys (eg, decision-making tools), and facilitate recovery. A growing body of literature explores the advantages of playing digital games for improving attention span and memory, managing emotions, promoting behavior change, and supporting treat

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic elevated mental health needs among students. As such, in 2022 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) introduced the Comprehensive Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Policy to deliver mental health awareness and services to all pK-12th grade students. While transitioning back to in-person learning, an evaluation was conducted in the 2022-2023 school year to identify current practices and barriers of delivery, and identify lessons learned to support the policy in schools.
METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 30 staff members who delivered mental health services. Int

The dominant narrative in mental health policy and practice has shifted in the 21st century from one of chronic ill health to a 'recovery' orientation. Knowledge of recovery is based on narratives of people with lived experience of mental distress. However the narratives of people experiencing structural inequalities are under-represented in recovery research. Meanwhile, uses of recovery narratives have been critiqued by survivor-researchers as a co-option of lived experience to serve neoliberal agendas. To address these twin concerns, we undertook a performative narrative analysis of two 'rec

BACKGROUND: Nature-based interventions (NBIs) have been identified to support a recovery-oriented approach for people experiencing mental health issues. However, there is still limited knowledge related to how mental health service users experience their recovery process when engaged in NBIs.
AIM: To explore and explain how mental health service users experience the process of personal recovery from participating in a newly developed NBI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted using constructivist grounded theory and included 20 participants. The NBI, including equine-assisted therap

Recovery-oriented practice emphasizes collaborative, person-centered relationships. However, culturally grounded frameworks describing how therapeutic relationships support recovery in Japan remain limited. This study explored the perspectives of Japanese community mental health service users to identify relational components that facilitate recovery and develop a culturally responsive conceptual framework. Using a phenomenological-qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten service users receiving community-based care. The data were analyzed through reflexive themat

Exercise physiologists (EPs) are increasingly recognised for their role in supporting people with lived experience of mental health challenges through structured, evidence-based exercise interventions. Despite strong evidence for their impact on health outcomes, routine integration of EPs into mental health systems remains limited. This Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA)-endorsed Consensus Statement aims to define the scope, best-practice principles and integration strategies for EPs working across diverse mental health settings. Methods for development of this Consensus Statement in

Aim: There is limited information regarding asthma triggers in World Trade Center (WTC) rescue and recovery workers (RRW) or how mental health conditions affect the perception of triggers. Methods: We included 372 WTC workers with asthma. The Asthma Trigger Inventory (ATI) assessed triggers along five domains: psychological, allergens, physical activity, infection, and pollution. We administered the Structured Clinical Interview to diagnose post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression and panic disorder (PD). BACKGROUND: Youth is a transitional period from 15 to 24 years involving developmental milestones that may be adversely affected by mental health (MH) concerns. Clinical interventions tend to focus on the reduction or cure of illness-based psychiatric symptoms. However, national and international mental policy focuses on promoting well-being and self-management through personal recovery. The leading framework of personal recovery in adults is CHIME, an acronym used to denote five key processes - Connectedness, Hope, Identity, Meaning and Empowerment. The extent to which CHIME reflects the expe

OBJECTIVES: Severe weather events have mental health consequences for survivors that may change over time. We assessed post-flood mental health longitudinally in three groups of mostly middle-aged and older adults who varied in current and prior severe weather experiences.
METHOD: Predictors of central interest were age, perceived social support, state hope (including agency and pathways), recovery stressors, and prior lifetime trauma. Criterion variables included symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and worry.
RESULTS: Analyses of variance yielded significant Disas

AIMS: Incorporating consumer perspectives into mental health services design is important in working to deliver recovery-oriented care. One of the challenges faced in mental health rehabilitation services is limited consumer engagement with the available support. Listening to consumers' expectations of mental health services, and what they hope to achieve, provides an opportunity to examine the alignment between existing services and the priorities and preferences of the people who use them. We explored consumer understandings and expectations of three recovery-oriented community-based residen

BACKGROUND: The World Trade Center (WTC) attacks exposed thousands of workers to hazardous environmental conditions and psychological trauma. In 2002, to assess the health of these workers, Congress directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to establish the WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. This program has established a large cohort of WTC rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers. We previously documented extensive pulmonary dysfunction in this cohort related to toxic environmental exposures.
OBJECTIVES: Our objective in this study was to describe mental hea

This qualitative narrative study explores how adults with lived experience of mental health difficulties draw on spirituality to make meaning and support recovery. Thirty participants were interviewed and asked to share their stories of spirituality, mental health and recovery. A narrative thematic analysis approach was developed to explore the superordinate theme of meaning making which comprised three interrelated themes: (1) Reframing, where spirituality enabled participants to adopt a bigger-picture perspective, evolve interpretations over time, and validate experiences; (2) Navigating myt
