Sub-lethal effects of heavy metals on activated sludge microorganisms.

The effects of heavy metals, at sub-lethal concentrations, on activated sludge microbial ecosystem were investigated. Adsorption capacity and rate of copper, chromium, lead and zinc on microbial flocs were much faster than that of organic matters. Metals affected not only the adsorption rate of organic matters but also the COD adsorption capacity of the activated sludge. Effects of heavy metals, on wastewater treatment performance of a sequencing batch reactor were also studied. Metal-laden wastewater at sub-lethal levels affected the performance to different extents, depending on the hydrauli

Concentrations of heavy metals in maternal and umbilical cord blood.

Concentrations of lead, cadmium, methylmercury and total mercury were measured in maternal and umbilical cord blood using graphite atomic absorption spectrometry. Two essential metals, copper and zinc, were also determined using ion chromatography. Lead, copper and zinc were found to be lower in the cord blood whereas methylmercury and total mercury were higher in cord blood than in maternal blood. Little differences were noted for cadmium in maternal and cord blood. Significant positive correlations were observed between the concentrations in maternal and cord blood with regard to lead (corre

Studies of nutritional safety of some heavy metals in mice.

Heavy metals have been proposed as nutrient markers to allow the accurate determination of the time of passage, nutrient intake, or apparent utilization of multiple nutrients. In order to evaluate possible toxic effects of scandium, chromium, lanthanum, samarium, europium, dysprosium, terbium, thulium, and ytterbium oxides, and barium sulfate upon growth, general development, reproduction, and lactation, mice were fed different levels of these compounds for three generations. The amount of elements fed were 0,110, 100, and 1000 times the use amount. The use amounts were (in ppm2.) : Sc, 0.12;

Protective effects of ascorbic acid against toxicity of heavy metals.

Toxicity of cadmium in the young Japanese quail rapidly produced moderate growth depression, hypogonadism in the male, decreased bone ash, severe anemia, alterations of "indicator" tissue levels of several essential inorganic elements, and marked histological abnormalities of the duodenum, bone marrow, adrenal medulla, and esophageal mucus glands. Cadmium appeared to have direct effects on zinc and iron, particularly iron (III), by decreasing intestinal absorption of these elements. Small amounts of dietary ascorbic acid were protective against many of the adverse effects of cadmium. The young

Exploring the link between heavy metals detoxification and crop improvements.

Heavy metal (HM)/metalloids stresses have a detrimental effect on agriculture and the ecosystem because they impose severe strains on plants, which are sessile by nature, and cause extreme economic losses. It is imperative to safeguard crop plants from HMs to maintain sustainable agriculture and meet the global need for food from an ever-increasing population. Anthropogenic activities provide a threat to agricultural soils by contaminating them with toxic HMs, which can lead to an excessive build-up of arsenic (As), aluminium (Al), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and mercu

Heavy metals and preservatives in commercial yoghurt from northern Iraq.

Pb and Cd occurrence, as well as sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate and nitrate concentrations, were investigated in 75 commercially available yogurts from the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Validated ICP-MS and HPLC-UV methods revealed good linearity (R2 > 0.995), satisfactory recoveries (90-108%) and appropriate limits of detection. Pb and Cd levels were below maximum limits as established by the European Commission and the Codex Alimentarius. Detection of preservatives in plain yoghurt was not interpreted as straightforward regulatory compliance, as it may indicate unauthorized additive use, car

Heavy metals in fish: bioaccumulation, toxicity, and human health risk.

The problem of heavy metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems represents one of the rising global environmental and public health threats. Unlike many organic contaminants, heavy metals are non-degradable and remain in ecosystems for an indefinite period of time, accumulating in the tissues of fish and bioaccumulating within food chains by orders of magnitude higher than ambient water concentrations. This paper reviews the major mechanisms and pathways of bioaccumulation and biomagnification of five priority heavy metals, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, chromium, and lead spanning all aspects of the c

Heavy metals and emerging organic contaminants in Japanese sewage sludge.

Because of its high dependence on imported phosphorus, Japan is striving to increase the reuse of phosphorus-rich sewage sludge (via direct application or composting) in agriculture rather than using incineration. However, the occurrence and behavior of pollutants in sewage sludge may pose environmental risks and have received limited attention until now. In this study, sewage sludge collected across Japan during a single sampling campaign was analyzed for heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), extra

Heavy Metals and One Health: Current Status and Future Prospects.

Water resources are being continuously contaminated by heavy metals. The levels of these metals are increasing exponentially due to various factors such as natural calamities, anthropogenic activities, rapid industrialization, overuse of pesticides, agricultural runoff, and overpopulation. Heavy metals are elements that have a high atomic weight and densities at least five times greater than that of water. Metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, mercury, and arsenic are non-biodegradable and tend to accumulate in the bodies of humans and animals, posing health risks such as gastrointes

Analysis of the association between blood heavy metals and tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a common symptom among adults in the United States. Increasing evidence indicates that prolonged exposure to heavy metals and excessive intake of trace elements from environmental pollution can increase the likelihood of hearing loss. Although studies have reported associations between heavy metals and hearing loss, the relationship between heavy metals and tinnitus remains uninvestigated. After accounting for the complex survey design, we assessed cross-sectional data on blood lead, cadmium, mercury, selenium, and manganese levels in 4950 participants from the National Health and

Relationship between heavy metals and miRNAs in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive cancers, characterized by poor prognosis due to the late diagnosis and chemotherapy resistance. Both genetic and environmental factors, including heavy metals exposure are involved in PDAC development. In this study, we evaluated the association between a panel of miRNAs and metals with PDAC, and subsequently assessed their correlation using Spearman's test to investigate potential biological links. miRNA expression was analysed in the serum of PDAC patients (n = 37) compared to healthy controls (n = 20), as well as in tumou

Effect of Endosymbiotic Bacteria on Fungal Resistance Toward Heavy Metals.

Most studies on metal removal or tolerance by fungi or bacteria focus on single isolates, without taking into consideration that some fungi in nature may be colonized by endobacteria. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the tolerance and removal of diverse metals with two fungal species: Linnemannia elongata containing Burkholderia-related endobacteria and Benniella erionia containing Mollicute-related endobacteria. Isogenic lines of both species were generated with antibiotic treatments to remove their respective endobacteria. Experiments involved comparing the isogenic lines and w

Impact of Heavy Metals on Human Male Fertility-An Overview.

Heavy metals are endocrine disruptors which interfere with processes mediated by endogenous hormones of the organism, negatively affecting endocrine functions. Some studies have correlated heavy metal exposure with male infertility. However, the number of studies conducted on humans are limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge on how heavy metals influence human male fertility. Hence, three distinct databases were consulted-PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science-using single keywords and combinations of them. The total number of identified articles was 636. Ne

Serum concentrations of heavy metals in women with endometrial polyps.

Endometrial polyps are one of the common reasons of abnormal uterine bleeding in women. Industrialisation, urbanisation and increased air pollution cause increased heavy metal exposure. Heavy metals that have oestrogenic effects in human body are named as metalloestrogens. The aim of this study was to investigate the serum metalloestrogen levels such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), aluminium (Al), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni) and Cu/Zn ratio and their possible relationship with the occurrence of endometrial polyps. Eighty women with abnormal uterine bleeding were divided into two groups: 40 women diagnos

Leaching mechanisms of heavy metals from fly ash stabilised soils.

Fly ash is an industrial waste material that is repurposed as a soil stabiliser worldwide. In Thailand, many ground improvement projects utilise mixtures of cement and fly ash to stabilise weak soils. In this study, leaching mechanisms of arsenic, chromium, lead, and zinc from cement and fly ash stabilised soils were investigated in the laboratory. Leaching tests were performed, with different leachants and pH conditions, on cement and fly ash stabilised soils used for soil improvement in road embankment construction projects in Northern Thailand. The results suggested that chemical compounds

Kidney and heavy metals - The role of environmental exposure (Review).

Heavy metals are extensively used in agriculture and industrial applications such as production of pesticides, batteries, alloys, and textile dyes. Prolonged, intensive or excessive exposure can induce related systemic disorders. Kidney is a target organ in heavy metal toxicity for its capacity to filter, reabsorb and concentrate divalent ions. The extent and the expression of renal damage depends on the species of metals, the dose, and the time of exposure. Almost always acute kidney impairment differs from chronic renal failure in its mechanism and in the magnitude of the outcomes. As a resu

Age-Related Uptake of Heavy Metals in Human Spinal Interneurons.

Toxic heavy metals have been implicated in the loss of spinal motoneurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease (ALS/MND). Motoneuron loss in the spinal anterior horn is severe in ALS/MND at the time of death, making this tissue unsuitable for examination. We therefore examined spinal cords of people without muscle weakness to look for any presence of heavy metals that could make these neurons susceptible to damage. Spinal cord samples from 50 individuals aged 1-95 y who had no clinical or histopathological evidence of spinal motoneuron loss were studied. Seven μm formalin-fixe

Concentration and speciation of heavy metals during water hyacinth composting.

The Tessier sequential extraction method was employed to investigate the changes in heavy metals speciation (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cd and Cr) during water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) composting. Results showed that, the contents of total metals concentration were increased during the composting process. The largest proportion of metals was found in the residual fraction which was in more stable form and is consequently considered unavailable for plant uptake. Reducible and oxidizable fractions of Ni, Pb and Cd were not found in all trials during water hyacinth composting. The concentrati
