BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Moebius sequence (MS) is a rare paralysis of the VI and VII cranial nerves. Craniofacial changes, which can hinder tracheal intubation considerably, are seen in approximately 90% of the patients.
CASE REPORT: A male patient, 2 years and 5 months old, with MS, underwent flexible bronchoscopy for evaluation of laryngotracheomalacia. Comorbidities: bronchospasm and interventricular communication. Anesthesia was induced with sevoflurane in 100% O2, followed by venoclysis. A number 2.5 laryngeal AMBU mask was inserted and the fiberbronchoscope scope introduced through th

The authors studied the MRI findings of three patients with Möbius syndrome. Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by complete or partial facial diplegia accompanied by other cranial nerve palsies. MRI demonstrated brainstem hypoplasia with straightening of the fourth ventricle floor, indicating an absence of the facial colliculus. These MRI features suggest the diagnosis of Möbius syndrome and correlate with the clinical and neurophysiologic findings.

The surgical goal in Mobius patients is far more modest and differs from patients with unilateral developmental facial paralysis. It is impossible to restore a true smile in these mask-like, expressionless faces. Despite sophisticated microneurovascular transplantations, movement can only be restored along one vector and enhanced firmness in the cheeks, thus multiple differentiated facial animation is not achievable. A detailed neurological evaluation can identify possible motor donors or residual function, which can be used for additional dynamic restorations. Due to the multiple cranial nerv

The combination of Moebius and Poland anomalies is rarely described in the literature. While some authors believe this association is an independent syndrome, others think that Poland, Moebius and Poland-Moebius syndromes are variations of the same condition. We report a case of Poland-Moebius syndrome in a 6-year-old girl who presented with bilateral convergent strabismus, the inability to abduct her eyes beyond the midline and brachydactyly of her right hand. Oral manifestations included incompetent lips and an abnormal tongue. Other facial features included hypoplasia of her mandible and he

INTRODUCTION: Facial asymmetry during crying in neonates is an important entity which might be due to an underlying true paralysis of the facial nerve or due to the benign overlooked diagnosis of congenital absence of the depressor angularis oris muscle (DAOM).
CASE REPORT: We report a full-term newborn delivered by normal spontaneous vertex delivery with uneventful pregnancy and Apgar score of 9 and 10 at 1 and 5 minutes respectively. His parents are first-degree cousins with 4 living normal siblings. His birth weight was appropriate for his gestational age. His initial neonatal assessment w

The prevalence of congenital ocular malformations has been described to vary from 0.04 to 6.8 per 10,000 live births. The nuclear mutations identified in chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia harbor multiple mtDNA deletions that include POLG mutations, PEO1 mutations, OPA1 mutations and RRM2B mutations. In Kearns-Sayre syndrome, the spontaneous mitochondrial deletions vary from 1.3 to 8.0 kb subunits of the oxidative phosphorylation enzymes and several t-RNA genes are affected. Oculopharyngeal muscle dystrophy is both autosomal dominant and recessive form. Congenital fibrosis of extraoc

We describe a child with a severe form of Moebius syndrome comprising VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI and XII cranial neuropathies with septo-optic dysplasia, severe hypopituitarism and behavioural features of autism, which we propose to describe as Moebius-plus syndrome. In addition, we illustrate the importance of a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to both diagnosis and management for patient outcomes when such complexity arises.

Moebius syndrome (MS) is a rare congenital neuromuscular disorder characterized by weakness or paralysis (palsy) of abducens and facial nerves, or other cranial nerves which may be affected. Diagnosis, treatment, and dental management of MS patients are focused on treating manifestations like malocclusion, while catering to associated extraoral (neurologic, dermatologic, ocular) complications, aiming to improve their quality of life. Here, we report the case of a 9-year-old female patient with MS who underwent orthodontic camouflage using combined orthopedic-orthodontic therapy using a high-pu

AIM: To review orofacial disabilities and their consequences in children with Moebius syndrome (MBS).
METHOD: We retrospectively analysed the records of 32 patients (21 males, 11 females) with non-progressive bilateral facial and abducens palsies who had been examined before 6 months of age.
RESULTS: All facial muscles were severely involved in 17 patients; in the 15 others, partial movements were found in the lower face. Most patients (n=24) were unable to smile. Patients frequently presented with congenital trismus (n=20) and drooling (n=18). Additional palsies involved cranial nerves IX a

BACKGROUND: Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital condition which presents not merely with 6th and 7th nerve palsies, but involves gaze paresis associated with craniofacial, limb, and other abnormalities. Heterogeneity is well known in patients with Möbius syndrome and rather than being of familial inheritance based on rare cases, it is much more recognized as a sporadic syndrome. We report an infant with features of congenital Möbius syndrome associated with cardiac rhabdomyomas in the absence of tuberous sclerosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational case report of an infant seen at a terti

BACKGROUND: Moebius Sequence (MS) is a rare disorder defined by bilateral congenital paralysis of the abducens and facial nerves in combination with various odontological, craniofacial, ophthalmological and orthopaedic conditions. The aetiology is still unknown; but both genetic (de novo mutations) and vascular events in utero are reported. The purpose of present study was through a multidisciplinary clinical approach to examine children diagnosed with Moebius-like symptoms. Ten children underwent odontological, ophthalmological, obstetric, paediatric, orthopaedic, genetic, radiological and ph

We report a 6 years old male child, presented with difficulty in swallowing, crying and smiling from early infancy and recurrent episodes of cyanosis on exertion for about 2 years. He had facial dysmorphism, clubbing and polydactyly and right sided lower motor neuron type of facial nerve palsy. On examination and relevant investigations findings were consistent with Moebius syndrome and Taussig-Bing anomaly. Moebius syndrome comprises of congenital facial nerve palsy with or without palsy of the other cranial nerves and the associated organ system malformations. Taussig-Bing anomaly is a rare

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a pharmacogenetic skeletal muscle disorder characterized by a hypermetabolic state after anesthesia with succinylcholine and/ or volatile anesthetics. Various neuromuscular syndromes are associated with susceptibility; however, Moebius syndrome has not been reported. Dantrolene is the drug of choice for treatment. Recurrence may occur in up to 20% of cases after the initial event treatment.
CASE REPORT: Male infant, fi rst twin, 7 months old, weighing 6.5kg and presenting with Moebius syndrome was admitted for clubfoot repair. The pati

As publications on craniofacial anomalies, malocclusions and dental complications recognised in patients suffering from Moebius syndrome are scarce, the authors of this paper decided to discuss the above aspects in broader terms along with the possibilities offered by orthodontic treatment. The etiology of Moebius syndrome has not hitherto been discovered, however the opinion prevails that it is brought on by multiple factors and conditions. In the analysed case, Moebius syndrome was diagnosed only when the patient was 6 years old. Based on the clinical examination, typical characteristics of

Möbius sequence is a rare congenital disorder usually defined as a combination of facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. Some studies suggest that psychosocial and psychiatric problems might be increased among affected persons. So far, there have been no studies on the self-perception of children and adolescents with the sequence. Seventeen participants with Möbius sequence (9 male, 8 female) aged 9-15 (mean: 11.59) years were studied. None of the probands was mentally retarded or had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Participants filled out well standardized German questi

INTRODUCTION: Moebius syndrome is an infrequent congenital, non-progressive disorder that is defined by facial palsy (usually bilateral) and oculomotor compromise. Its clinical spectrum is variable but it affects other cranial nerves and is associated with multiple malformations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report the clinical, neurological and neuroimaging features and the progress of 20 patients (16 males and 4 females) who satisfied diagnostic criteria for Moebius sequence.
RESULTS: Ages at the first visit ranged from 9 days to 23 months. Births had been normal in 50% of the patients. Facial

Ankyloglossia superior is an exceedingly rare congenital condition that consists of a connection between the tongue and hard palate. This abnormality is considered part of the ankyloglossia superior syndrome when found with other malformations such as limb deformities, gastrointestinal malformation, and cleft palate. Ankyloglossia superior can also be associated with other known syndromes. We have presented the case of a female infant born with multiple malformations, including partial agenesis of the feet and hands, micrognathia, a lack of expression of the facial muscles, convergent strabism
