Estimating survival of dental fillings on the basis of interval-censored data and multi-state models.

We aim to compare the life expectancy of a filling in a primary tooth between two types of treatments. We define the probabilities that a dental filling survives without complication until the permanent tooth erupts from beneath (exfoliation). We relate the time to exfoliation of the tooth to the age of the child and the time to failure of the filling to the duration since the treatment. We followed up fillings at repeated examinations where information is collected regarding the filling and the tooth. Several fillings can be placed in the same mouth, possibly by the same dentist. To deal with

Functional brain network alterations in a rat model of dental malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion has been associated with alterations in central nervous system function; however, the effects of persistent abnormal occlusal input on whole-brain functional organization remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate functional brain network reorganization associated with unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) in rats. METHODS: Fourteen female rats were used, seven of which were treated with left-sided UAC at 6 weeks old and the other seven served as sham-operation controls. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired at 26 weeks ol

Craniofacial and Dental Defects in the Col1a1Jrt/+ Mouse Model of Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Certain mutations in the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes produce clinical symptoms of both osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) that include abnormal craniofacial growth, dental malocclusion, and dentinogenesis imperfecta. A mouse model (Col1a1(Jrt)/+) was recently developed that had a skeletal phenotype and other features consistent with moderate-to-severe OI and also with EDS. The craniofacial phenotype of 4- and 20-wk-old Col1a1(Jrt)/+ mice and wild-type littermates was assessed by micro-computed tomography (µCT) and morphometry. Assessing risk factors for dental caries: a statistical modeling approach.

The problem of identifying potential determinants and predictors of dental caries is of key importance in caries research and it has received considerable attention in the scientific literature. From the methodological side, a broad range of statistical models is currently available to analyze dental caries indices (DMFT, dmfs, etc.). These models have been applied in several studies to investigate the impact of different risk factors on the cumulative severity of dental caries experience. However, in most of the cases (i) these studies focus on a very specific subset of risk factors; and (ii)

Enzyme replacement therapy prevents dental defects in a model of hypophosphatasia.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) occurs from loss-of-function mutation in the tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNALP) gene, resulting in extracellular pyrophosphate accumulation that inhibits skeletal and dental mineralization. TNALP-null mice (Akp2(-/-)) phenocopy human infantile hypophosphatasia; they develop rickets at 1 week of age, and die before being weaned, having severe skeletal and dental hypomineralization and episodes of apnea and vitamin B(6)-responsive seizures. Delay and defects in dentin mineralization, together with a deficiency in acellular cementum, are characteristic. We rep

Connective tissue orientation around dental implants in a canine model.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the orientation of collagen in the canine gingival connective tissue to a titanium surface (TI), and to hydroxyapatite coatings applied by plasma-spraying (HAPS) and ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD), on the supracrestal region of dental implants after 3 and 4 months. The effects of induced peri-implantitis on the soft connective tissue apposed to the implant were also evaluated. The use of these three surface types allowed for the evaluation of the effects of chemical composition (TI vs. IBAD; same topography) and topography (HAPS vs. IBAD; simila

Classification of pediatric dental diseases from panoramic radiographs using natural language transformer and deep learning models.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate classification of pediatric dental diseases from panoramic radiographs is essential for early diagnosis and effective treatment planning. While deep learning models traditionally operate directly on image data, text-based representations generated from radiographs may provide an alternative strategy for disease classification. METHODS: This study proposed a text-driven framework in which a natural language transformer was used to generate structured textual descriptions from panoramic radiographs. These descriptions were subsequently classified for binary disease detect

Wearable Augmented Reality for Dental Implant Navigation: From Experimental Models to Clinical Application-A Scoping Review.

Background: Accurate three-dimensional positioning of dental implants is fundamental for long-term prosthetic success. While static guided surgery and traditional dynamic navigation present intrinsic limitations related to physical bulk or hand-eye coordination (the "look-away" phenomenon), Augmented Reality (AR) via Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) promises to overcome these barriers by superimposing virtual holograms directly onto the surgical field. Objectives: The aim of this scoping review is to map the existing literature to evaluate the positioning accuracy, workflow efficiency, and ergonom
