Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the eyelid: a case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical features, therapeutic method, and histopathological findings of a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the lower eyelid and review the literature about the mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from the eye. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: An 88-year-old man developed a painless, indurated nodule in the left lower eyelid for two years and ulceration of the skin existed for a year. He underwent tumor resection and reconstruction of the eyelid. By histopathology, tumor cells showed an admixture of epidermoid and mucus-secreting cells, which

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is most commonly found in the parotid gland. It rarely occurs in the larynx and hypopharynx. There are only 32 reported cases from these areas. A case of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hypopharynx is presented. Although the initial impression was squamous cell carcinoma, glandular structures were found in metastatic lymph nodes in the neck specimen, and after mucicarmine stains were positive, the final diagnosis was changed to mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This case illustrates the difficulty in diagnosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma, especially in unexpected locations. Di

Histological types of laryngotracheal tumors induced in Syrian golden hamsters by nitrosomorpholine and nitrosopiperidine.

The chronic oral administration of nitrosomorpholine (NM) and nitrosopiperidine (NP) to 360 adult Syrian golden hamsters of both sexes resulted in the induction of a high incidence of laryngo-tracheal tumors, which in the group treated with 0.01% solution of NM affected up to 80% of the males. A total of 232 different laryngo-tracheal tumors were found. 36 of these were located within the supraglottic and glottic larynx, 62 were within the subglottic and glottic larynx, and 134 arose within the trachea. Among the laryngeal supraglottic and glottic tumors there were 18 squamous cell carcinomas,

"Low grade" mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the bronchus with "high grade" biological behavior.

A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the bronchus with low grade histologic features exhibited an aggressive biological behavior. All gross, microscopic, and ultrastructural features were those of a morphologically low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Grossly, the lesion was an exophytic endobronchial mass; microscopically, it contained sheets of monomorphic cells with well-formed mucus glands, no mitoses, and no necrosis; and ultrastructurally, it consisted of numerous goblet cells and mitochondria- and glycogen-rich cells with well-formed microvilli. However, the patient developed widespread

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the salivary gland: problem cases.

Among 582 fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of major and minor salivary glands performed between 1974 and 1990, lack of cytological histologic correlation was noted in 21 cases. Of these, the cause in 10 FNAs was inadequate cytological sampling of the lesion. [One case of malignant hemangiopericytoma was tentatively diagnosed as a monomorphic adenoma on FNA, a polymorphic T-cell lymphoma was diagnosed as granulomatous inflammation on aspiration biopsy, a benign lymphoepithelial lesion was diagnosed as a reactive lymph node, a branchial cleft cyst was called benign mixed tumor (BMT), one ca

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid gland showing marked ciliation suggestive of its pathogenesis.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid gland is a rare tumor first described by Rhatigan et al. in 1977. Its pathogenesis is still controversial. With regard to its most likely origin, some authors have suggested that it arises directly from follicular epithelium whereas others have proposed that it arises from ultimobranchial body (diverticulum from the fourth pharyngeal pouch) remnants, also known as solid cell nests (SCN). Herein is reported a unique case of thyroid mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patient, a 67-year-old man, presented with a non-tender thyroid mass and vocal cord fixation. T

Local recurrence of sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia in the upper lip: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia is a rare morphological variant of thyroid carcinoma associated with Hashimoto's disease. To date, only three such tumors have been reported in the minor salivary glands. We describe the first case, to the best of our knowledge, of recurrent sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia in the minor salivary glands of the upper lip. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old Japanese man was referred to our hospital with a mass in his median upper lip of four years' duration. An examination of his median upper lip revealed a we

Fluorescence in situ hybridization for detection of MAML2 rearrangements in oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinomas: utility as a diagnostic test.

Oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma poses diagnostic challenge because of its histologic overlap with other oncocytic salivary gland lesions, including Warthin tumor. Although the prognostic value of the t(11;19) MECT1-MAML2 fusion gene has been established in mucoepidermoid carcinoma, its diagnostic use in discriminating oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma from histologic mimics is unexplored. We evaluated the translocation status in 14 cases of oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma using a MAML2-11q21 break-apart probe spanning the entire chromosome region of the MAML2 gene and correlated these f

[A case of primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from the common bile duct].

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the bile duct is an extremely rare tumor. Seventeen cases originating from intrahepatic bile duct and 2 cases from common hepatic duct have been reported in the English literature. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from the common bile duct has not been previously reported. A 68 year-old man was admitted due to obstructive jaundice. Computed tomography showed a malignant tumor of the common bile duct located in the intrapancreatic segment. Filling defects of the distal common bile duct was seen on endoscopic retrograde cholangiogram. Under the impression of bile duct

Primary cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the anterior neck.

Cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma is quite rare. We describe a case of extrasalivary cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the head and neck region. The theories dealing with the origin of these tumors in the sweat and salivary glands are discussed, and the literature concerning these lesions reviewed. We believe this to be the first description of an extrasalivary mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the head and neck region or other sites that normally contain mucous glands.

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid gland. Its clinical behavior is determined by the relative ratio of mucous and epidermoid cells with pathologic high-grade tumors containing a greater proportion of epidermoid cells. Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rarely reported variant with unclear long-term clinical behavior. A 23-year-old female was found to have a deep lobe parotid mass on imaging studies. Preoperative evaluation was non-diagnostic. Intraoperatively, the tumor was found to be adherent to the lower division of the facial nerve and portions

Invadopodia Related-Proteins Expression in Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the expression of invadopodia-related proteins in mucoepidermoid carcinoma and their influence on this tumor's invasiveness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-seven mucoepidermoid carcinoma grading samples were evaluated for the expression of Tks4, Tks5, cortactin, and MT1-MMP and compared to 10 control samples of normal-looking salivary glands by immunohistochemistry. For in vitro analysis, immunofluorescence identified the expression of invadopodia-related proteins in the mucoepidermoid carcinoma cell line. Invadopodia formation and invasion assays were perf

Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland: Clinicopathological observation and literature review.

Warthin tumor (WT)-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma resembles the histologic pattern of WT and pathologists unaware of this possibility may misdiagnose it as WT with squamous and mucous epithelium metaplasia or WT malignant transfer into mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The present study reported a case of a 41-year-old Chinese female with a solitary mass in the left parotid gland. In this case, microscopic observation revealed prominent lymph node stroma and multiple cystic structures similar to those seen in WT. However, it lacked the two layers of oncocytic epithelial tissue characteristic of WT. Fur

Mucoepidermoid-adenosquamous carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx: a report of 21 cases and a review of the literature.

Twenty-one cases of mucoepidermoid-adenosquamous carcinoma (MEC/ASC) of the larynx and hypopharynx were collected and reviewed from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology tumor registry from 1945 to 1979. This is the largest series of such lesions in this location reported to date. In addition, the literature was reviewed and 32 previous cases noted. The overall five-year survival was 77%, although low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma had a better survival than did adenosquamous-high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Primary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Lacrimal Sac -  a Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal sac tumors are very rare and are often missed because patients present with features consistent with chronic dacryocystitis. Squamous cell carcinoma is the common-est lacrimal sac malignancy. Although primary mucoepidermoid carcinomas of the lacrimal sac are rare, they are locally aggressive. Furthermore, their proximity to vital structures and the skull base makes them potentially life-threatening. Multidisciplinary management is required, and wide excision followed by chemoradiation is the recommended treatment. CASE: Here, we report a 65-year-old male who presented wit

[A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus].

A 19-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with anterior mediastinal cystic tumor. Subtotal thymectomy with the tumor was performed. The tumor was localized inside the thymus without outer infiltration. It weighed 145 g and measured 9 x 8 x 5 cm. The cut surface was cystic and spongy, partially with a solid focus. Pathological findings of the solid area was compatible with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus. The histogenesis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus was discussed.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the ascending colon: report of a case.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare entity. The present case is the first report of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the large bowel. A 71-year-old man was admitted to our hospital to undergo surgery for a recurrent chordoma of the hip. A barium enema and colonoscopy were carried out to assess whether there was any relationship between the recurrent chordoma and the rectum. An ulcerating tumor was thus identified in the ascending colon. A radical right hemicolectomy was carried out. In the resected specimen a 3-cm ulcerating lesion was observed. The tumor consisted of P

Treatment of tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma by argon plasma coagulation during pregnancy.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the tracheobronchial tree is a rare airway tumor (<1% of all lung tumors). In adults, the majority of primary tracheal tumors are malignant. Management during pregnancy is complex and requires weighing maternal and fetal prognosis. Reported cases describe surgical resection following cesarean section. We report the first case to be treated by Argon-Plasma Coagulation (APC) in pregnancy. A 35-year-old Caucasian woman G1P0, at 27 weeks of gestation was admitted to the emergency department because of hemoptysis and severe dyspnea. Bronchoscopy and biopsies diagnosed pr

A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma with clear cell components occurring in retromolar region.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas in the minor salivary glands usually originate in the palatine gland, and their occurrence in the retromolar region is rare. We report a rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma with clear cell components occurring in the retromolar region. The patient was a 63-year-old woman referred to our hospital with the chief complaint of a painless mass in the right retromolar region initially found during treatment at a local dental clinic. The 20×10-mm mass was well-defined, elastic, and flexible. The surface of the mucosa was healthy. The mass was clinically diagnosed as a ging
