Infections with Mycobacterium microti, a member of the M. tuberculosis complex, have been increasingly reported in humans and in domestic and free-ranging wild animals. At postmortem examination, infected animals may display histopathologic lesions indistinguishable from those caused by M. bovis or M. caprae, potentially leading to misidentification of bovine tuberculosis. We report 3 cases of M. microti infections in free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus) from western Austria and southern Germany. One diseased animal displayed severe pyogranulomatous pleuropneumonia and multifocal granulomas

Infection is a clinically relevant complication associated with intracardiac devices. Atypical mycobacteria, particularly Mycobacterium fortuitum, have been increasingly implicated in cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) infections. We present a case of M. fortuitum CIED infection in a patient with ischaemic cardiomyopathy occurring approximately 3 weeks after insertion. The recognition and adequate treatment, including device removal, tissue sampling and the determination of antimicrobial sensitivities, are essential in the proper management of these patients.

UNLABELLED: Tuberculosis is a major public health problem worldwide. Our study aimed to investigate epidemiological and demographic characteristics of tuberculosis infection and resistance to antituberculous drugs in Iasi County in 2009.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We have analysed the epidemiological parameters for 687 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, new cases confirmed by microscopy and cultivation on Lowenstein Jensen. First and second-line antituberculous susceptibility testing was done for 130 strains, using agar proportion method and absolute-concentration method.
RESULTS: The number of

MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM complex (MAC) consists of nontuberculous mycobacteria that cause disease in immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. The organisms are ubiquitous in the environment, and acquisition occurs through ingestion or inhalation of aerosols from soil, water, or biofilms. Disease may manifest as disseminated infection, soft tissue infection, chronic pneumonia, or hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Nontuberculous mycobacteria are increasingly associated with pulmonary disease, with MAC being the most common nontuberculous mycobacteria to cause pulmonary disease in the United States. P

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 64 year old man complained about progressive pain in his right upper leg and pelvis since 4 weeks without any history of trauma. He noticed a reduced general health status for several months with weight loss and subfebrile temperatures. The patient's medical history revealed several malignant tumours and recurrent infections with atypical mycobacteria and herpes viruses.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory findings showed signs of chronic inflammation. Multiple disseminated osteolytic bone lesions, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and multiple splenic lesions were

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is an important pathogen that can cause chronic lung disease in immunocompetent patients and disseminated disease in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Treatment of MAC with antituberculosis drugs was unsatisfactory, but the introduction of the newer macrolides, clarithromycin and azithromycin, and of rifabutin has greatly improved the outcome of treatment regimens for MAC. However, these agents are also associated with many new treatment-related adverse effects and potential drug-drug interactions. Rifamycins [rifampicin (rifampin) m

This review examines an important bacterial infection in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Despite occasional infections with bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Salmonella, and Nocardia in patients with AIDS, the primary problems of AIDS and invading bacterial infections center around mycobacteriosis. A unique feature of AIDS has been the common identification of disseminated infections with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare. The following discussion examines our present understanding of this group of organisms and how they interact with the compromise

Mycobacterium chelonei is a facultative pathogen which exists as a saprophyte in the environment and rarely produces clinical manifestations in humans. We describe a 62-year-old woman, long-term treated with low-dose steroids for severe asthma, who presented sporotrichoid-like lesions on one leg. These lesions appeared two months after a cat-scratch and were present for six months. Histological examination showed acute inflammation with polymorphonuclear infiltration without tuberculoid granuloma nor caseation necrosis. Ziehl-Neelsen stains were negative. Mycobacteria were found by direct exam

Populations of Eurasian badgers (Meles meles) with tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis infection) are a significant reservoir of infection for cattle in Ireland and the United Kingdom. In this study the distribution of infection, histological lesions and gross lesions was determined in a sample of 132 culled badgers from naturally-infected wild populations. Badgers were culled when an epidemiological investigation following a tuberculosis breakdown in a cattle herd implicated badgers as the probable source of infection. The definition of tuberculosis infection was based on the isolation of M. bo

Mycobacterial infections of the cardiovascular system are rare and only a few reports provide detailed pathological information. This report presented a rare case of asymptomatic myocardial mycobacterial infection identified at autopsy. The patient died from pulmonary thromboembolism. The Myocardial mycobacterial lesions were found during the histological examination. Although myocardial tuberculosis was considered highly probable, real-time quantitative fluorescence PCR tests for Mycobacterium tuberculosis on paraffin-embedded heart and lung tissues were negative. This report discusses the pr

An 84-year-old female with metastatic left breast cancer underwent a venous port insertion for chemotherapy. The port was inserted using standard techniques with image guidance under local anesthesia. She presented after 36 days with evidence of infection. A limited bedside ultrasound demonstrated free fluid surrounding the port. The port was subsequently removed the same day, at which time pus was expressed from the subcutaneous pocket. The culture from the pus grew Mycobacterium abscessus. She required removal of the port and wound debridement, wound dressings and a prolonged course of antib

Considerable measures have been implemented in healthcare institutions to screen for and treat tuberculosis (TB) in developed countries; however, in low- and middle-income countries, many individuals still suffer from TB's deleterious effects. TB is caused by an infection from the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) bacteria. Symptoms of TB may range from an asymptomatic latent-phase affecting the pulmonary tract to a devastating active and disseminated stage that can cause central nervous system demise, musculoskeletal impairments, and genitourinary compromise. Following M. tb infection, cytok

A gentleman in his 60s with end-stage kidney disease status post kidney transplantation on prednisone and tacrolimus presented with generalised weakness for 7 days, associated with altered mental status. Investigations revealed pancytopenia, acute kidney injury, hypercalcaemia, decreased parathyroid hormone (PTH) and normal calcitriol levels. CT of the chest showed multifocal lung opacities suspicious for malignancy. Bronchoscopy with biopsy yielded no malignant cells, and bronchoalveolar lavage specimens grew Mycobacterium kansasii The patient was treated with bisphosphonates, calcitonin and

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Mycobacterium abscessus pulmonary disease (PD) is challenging with frequent side effects and uncertain rates of success.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients at our center with at least one respiratory sample positive for M. abscessus between 2014 and 2019. Electronic health records were reviewed to determine factors associated with M. abscessus infection and clinical outcomes.
RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients were identified including 24 with cystic fibrosis (CF), 10 with bronchiectasis, two with chronic obstructive PD (COPD), and one with asth

The association between achalasia and no tuberculosis mycobacterial lung infection is well described in the literature. MycobactériumFortuitum is often responsible, and the clinical's presentation is an aspiration pneumonia resistant to usual antibiotic therapy. We report the case of a 15 year-old patient with the history of Allgrove syndrome. The chest imaging showed right lung congestion; the diagnosis was bacteriological and MycobactériumFortuitum resistant to rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide and ethambutol was isolated. The patient was treated by the association cotrimoxazole, cipro

Mycobacterium marinum infection of the hand is rare. We report the case of a 39-year-old man with M marinum infection that resulted in a chronic soft tissue infection, extensor tendon synovitis, and arthritis of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. The cause was probably tropical freshwater fishes.

Mycobacterium chelonae can cause numerous infections, including lung disease, local cutaneous disease, osteomyelitis, joint infections and ocular disease. With the exception of lung disease, these syndromes commonly develop after direct inoculation. The most common clinical presentation in immunocompetent individuals is skin and soft tissue infection. We present a case of M. chelonae infection of the parotid gland that was successfully treated with clarithromycin monotherapy. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of M. chelonae parotitis in an adult.
