A female patient presented with nasal septal perforation that did not respond to conventional therapeutic management. Later, because of a malabsorption problem in one of her children, she underwent analytic tests and distal duodenal biopsy, which revealed that she was suffering from subclinical/silent celiac disease. The treatment, a gluten-free diet, unexpectedly resulted in the cessation of the destructive nasal process. Four years later, the patient remains asymptomatic. Nasal septal perforation might constitute a new entity associated with celiac disease hitherto not described in the liter

Use of cocaine, by inhalation, is currently increasing in Western Countries and its use is superseding heroin in the rising generation. Young people of the third millennium use narcotics to avoid the negative conditions of daily life and to escape on "unreal" trips, as happened in the '60s and '70s for the heroin-addicted. Today, on the contrary, people addicted to cocaine want to be more competitive and "winners" and believe that cocaine can help them to reach this goal. A series of 104 patients (75 male, 29 female), aged between 16 and 54 yrs, all habitual inhaling cocaine users (> or = 10 t

BACKGROUND Nasal septal perforation (NSP) may alter nasal airflow patterns and physiology. To the best of our knowledge, no studies in the English literature have investigated the effect of NSP and its treatment on polysomnographic parameters. In this study, we aimed to investigate polysomnographic parameters in patients with NSP as well as changes in those parameters after treatment of NSP. MATERIAL AND METHODS Nineteen patients diagnosed with NSP were included in the study. All patients had baseline and post-procedure polysomnographies (PSG) after insertion of silicone septal button for clos

BACKGROUND: Septal perforation closure is still often invasive and complex, with relatively low closure rates.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to provide the first results of a case series of 20 patients with nasal septal perforations who underwent septal perforation repair by both an open and a minimally invasive technique by using a graft that consisted of temporoparietal fascia and a polydioxanone (PDS) plate without mucosal flaps. Between 2014 and 2016, we tested, for the first time, the feasibility of the insertion of this graft via a hemitransfixion incision at our institution. The rationale for t

BACKGROUND: Since 1972, patients with large nasal perforations, who were symptomatic, and who were not candidates for surgery, had the option of custom prosthetic closure at Mayo Clinic. Although septal prostheses have helped many patients, 27% of pre-1982 patients chose not to keep the prosthesis in place. Two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) sizing resulted in more of the patients choosing to retain the prosthesis. The introduction of three-dimensional (3-D) printing to the sizing process offered the potential of further improved retention by refinement in prosthesis fit.

BACKGROUND: Perforations of the nasal septum can be very disturbing for patients due to increased crust formation, nose bleeds, obstruction of nasal breathing and whistling sounds during nasal breathing. The aim of this study was to evaluate how the symptom burden can be alleviated by custom-made silicone buttons derived from an impression mold.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out to evaluate 45 patients with symptomatic septal perforations, who have been treated over a period of 8 years. The magnitude and localization of the perforations were measured on the impressio

Nasal dermoplasty is effective in controlling epistaxis in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). Skin graft take failure occurs mostly in cases of large septal perforation. The MW method was developed as a modification of nasal dermoplasty designed for patients with HHT having a large septal perforation. It seems to be a safe and effective approach and should be tried for recurrent bleeders with septal perforation.

IMPORTANCE: Numerous techniques are used for septal perforation repair, yet success rates remain variable. Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of interposition grafts of polydioxanone plates combined with a temporoparietal fascia graft for septal perforation repair.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate and describe the use of interposition grafts of polydioxanone plates combined with a temporoparietal fascia graft for septal perforation repair and the expansion of this technique to patients with more challenging comorbidities, including granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical closure of septal perforations is a challenging procedure. Various techniques exist. Each perforation proves that there is not the one precise procedure for all perforations. Nevertheless, success rates of about 90% are reported, although the procedure for closing the defect is challenging. Our goal was to evaluate the existing data.
METHODS: We performed a contemporary review of published closure rates of septal perforations on order to compare the present results in the literature. The limitations of the respective studies were analyzed.
RESULTS: We found closure ra

BACKGROUND: Nasal septum perforations from surgical submucous resection, septoplasty, blunt trauma, and substance abuse may cause epistaxis, nasal obstruction, discharge, crusting, dryness, pain, and whistling. While small symptomatic perforations are closed with local mucosal flaps, options for closure of large symptomatic perforations are limited. A local pedicled flap, the facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap was studied in patients with large symptomatic nasal septal defects.
METHODS: Patients included in the study had (1) a nasal septal defect measuring at least 20 mm in greatest dim

Nasal septal perforation (NSP) repair has evolved with the development of advanced techniques, such as anterior ethmoidal artery and greater palatine artery flaps, achieving high success rates. Traditional challenges in combining NSP repair with rhinoplasty stem from reliance on the mucoperichondrial blood supply for graft survival and the risks of cartilage absorption or infection during exposure of the L-strut framework. This article presents modified "racket-on-donut" and "boot-on-donut" techniques for simultaneous NSP repair and rhinoplasty, incorporating innovations to bilaterally cover g
