Error-related negativity predicts increases in anxiety in a sample of clinically anxious female children and adolescents over 2 years.

BACKGROUND: An increased neural response to making errors has emerged as a biomarker of anxiety. Error negativity (Ne) or errorrelated negativity (ERN) is an event-related potential generated when people commit errors; the Ne/ERN is greater among people with anxiety and predicts increases in anxiety. However, no previous study has examined whether the Ne/ERN can be used as a prognostic indicator among people with current anxiety. The present study addressed this gap by examining whether the Ne/ERN prospectively predicts increases in anxiety symptoms in clinically anxious children and adolescen

[Catatonia in the elderly].

Catatonia is a syndrome characterized by mutism, stupor, immobility, negativism, posturing, stereotypy, and echophenomena. Not only patients with schizophrenia, but also patients with general medical disease, mood disorder, and substance-related disorder exhibit catatonia. In the patients with catatonia, it is recommended to examine whether they have a general medical disease. We present two catatonic elder patients. Case 1 exhibited catatonia with vascular dementia, and was revealed to have anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome. Case 2 exhibited catatonia with dementia with Lewy bodies, and was

Psychological assessment of catatonic schizophrenia.

Probably due to the rarity of the disorder and the general inability of catatonic patients to cooperate with standardized assessment, no data exist documenting the psychological features associated with catatonic schizophrenia that may appear on psychological tests. This study utilized standard assessment techniques to examine clinical hypotheses regarding the psychogenic correlates of catatonic conditions from the performance of one man on psychological tests. In accordance with previous theory, test findings indicated frequent constriction, rigidity, and negativism in conjunction with compul

Revisiting lorazepam challenge test: Clinical response with dose variations and utility for catatonia in a psychiatric emergency setting.

OBJECTIVE: Catatonia can be life-threatening unless timely identified and treated. Lorazepam's ubiquitous response has led to its universal acceptance as being the first-line management of catatonia and alludes to catatonia's neurobiological underpinnings. Lorazepam challenge test (LCT) is widely used to either confirm a catatonia diagnosis or determine lorazepam sensitivity. It has a proposed schedule for administering lorazepam. However, efficacy of recommended LCT doses lack systematic evidence, resulting in variable LCT doses used in clinical and research settings contributing to findings

[Schizophrenic defect syndromes and drive behavior].

First the terms "impulse" (Antrieb) and "schizophrenic defect" (schizophrener Defekt) are explained and defined. 49 (= 12 per cent) of the 409 schizophrenic in-patients, treated 1970-1972, had the symptoms of a schizophrenic defect. All of them showed disturbances of impulse: more than half the patients a deficiency, nearly a third an unsettled surplus, and about ten percent an alternating impulse. The deficiency as the alternating impulse usually were accompanied with a negativ mood. The surplus of impulse was bound up as equal parts with positive and negative moods. At last any kind of distu

Evolution of sensitivity to Hymenoptera venom in 200 allergic patients followed for up to 3 years.

Duration of venom immunotherapy still remains questionnable, since some patients outgrow their sensitivity. Two hundred venom-allergic patients (4 to 82 years; mean +/- SD, 37.3 +/- 14.2 years) who were first observed with systemic reactions (SRs) were investigated yearly for up to 3 years. Among these patients, 72 were allergic to honeybee venom, 83 to yellow jacket venom, and 45 to both yellow jacket and Polistes venom. At each visit patients had skin tests and RAST to venom. All patients had the same semirush protocol and a monthly maintenance dose of 200 micrograms. After 1 year of treatme

Interstitial pregnancy management: A multicentric analysis of 98 patients from the FRANCOGENT group comparing surgery and medical treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes associated with each therapeutic option for patients diagnosed with interstitial pregnancy (IP). METHODS: We conducted a multicentric retrospective cohort study within the departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics involved in the Francogent research group. Women treated for an interstitial pregnancy between January 2008 to December 2019 were included. Three therapeutic options were evaluated: surgical treatment (ST); in situ methotrexate combined with systemic methotrexate (IS-MTX); and systemic methotrexate (IM-MTX). Fluconazole and amphotericin B susceptibility testing of Cryptococcus neoformans: results of minimal inhibitory concentrations against 265 isolates from HIV-positive patients before and after two or more months of antifungal therapy.

Cryptococcosis, a fatal disease without appropriate treatment, is still one of the major opportunistic mycoses in AIDS patients in Argentina despite the availability of high active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). Over the last decade, drugs employed in the treatment of disseminated cryptococcosis at Infectious Diseases Hospital "F.J. Muñiz" included amphotericin B (AMB) followed by fluconazole (FCZ), due to the fact that flucytosine was not available in Argentina during this period. A considerable number of patients did not negativize cultures after 2-3 weeks of treatment as it was expected,

[Diarrhea in young calves. 4. Redox potential of the gastrointestinal tract of clinically healthy calves, and calves with spontaneous diarrhea, experimental Escherichia coli infection, and cyclophosphamide treatment].

The redox potential (ROP) dropped strongly in a calf, from two hours after birth to 48 hours of age. The drop in the colon was more strongly pronounced than that in the small intestine. -The Eh values recorded throughout the small intestine of clinically intact calves, aged between four and ten days, were more negative than those in the stomach. The most negative ROP values, which differed with significance from those of all proximal gastro-intestinal sections, were recorded from the caecum. -Intracolonic negativation of ROP in calves, during the first hours of life, must be attributed to prog

Burnout: The Resident Evil - Perspectives from the Horses' Mouth!

Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions- (1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, (2) increased mental distance from one's job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job and (3) reduced professional efficacy. Any profession where a certain amount of emotional work and empathy are expected renders a person vulnerable to being burned out. Resident doctors, who play the role of a primary care-giver and spend a great deal of time with patients, are most p

Catatonia versus neuroleptic malignant syndrome: the diagnostic dilemma and treatment.

Catatonia is a syndrome, comprised of symptoms such as motor immobility, excessive motor activity, extreme negativism, and stereotyped movements. Neuroleptic is able to induce catatonia like symptoms, that is, the neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). In NMS, patients typically show symptoms such as an altered mental state, muscle rigidity, tremor, tachycardia, hyperpyrexia, leukocytosis, and elevated serum creatine phosphorous kinase. Several researchers have reported studies on catatonia and the association between catatonia and NMS, but none were from this part of the eastern India. In our

A rare case of cytomegalovirus myocarditis complicating rejection after heart transplantation: Case report and review of literature.

UNLABELLED: A 49-year-old female with terminal hypertrophic cardiomyopathy underwent orthotopic heart transplantation. The patient developed early acute rejection. Intensifying therapy led to improvement, but cytomegalovirus (CMV) myocarditis emerged. Aggressive management, including high-dose ganciclovir and intravenous immunoglobulin, resulted in negativization of CMV and rejection markers. Cardiac function recovered, emphasizing the challenges and successful multidisciplinary approach in managing complex post-transplant complications. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To diagnose and treat complication

Oral Corticosteroid Relieves Post-COVID-19 Anosmia in a 35-Year-Old Patient.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly infectious respiratory illness caused by SARS-CoV-2. Not much is yet known about this new viral disease. In our early encounter with the COVID-19, before the pandemic and during the early days of dealing with this novel viral disease in our country, we saw some cases of anosmia in patients infected by SARS-CoV-2. In many cases, this chemosensitive dysfunction persisted after the negativization of the nasopharyngeal swab. We report effective treatment of anosmia by oral corticosteroid therapy in a patient recovered from COVID-19.

Granulated sugar for adjuvant treatment of surgical wound infection due to multi-drug-resistant pathogens in a child with sarcoma: a case report and literature review.

The use of sugar for treating wounds which are difficult to heal and positive to resistant pathogens has already been documented. The authors describe the successful treatment by direct instillation of granular sugar in the antibiotic-resistant infected surgical site wound of a child with sarcoma. Sugar instillation in the extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacter cloacae positive wound, in addition to systemic treatment with meropenem and levofloxacin, allowed culture negativization in six days and complete wound healing in 30 days. These results make the use of sugar an

ELISA test detected 42 cases of hepatic localisations, 5 of 5 pulmonary hydatidosis and 1 for 4 other localisations. The authors showed a good correlation and complementarity with different serological tests: immuno-fluorescence, indirect hemagglutination. They applied ELISA test to the post-therapeutic controls. No serological peak was detected and for 6 of 13 cases, the serology was negative between 7th and 90th day following the treatment. It is impossible
