Opioid use disorders and the prescription of long-acting medications for their treatment have increased dramatically over the last decade among pregnant women. Newborns who experience prolonged in utero opioid exposure may develop neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Until recently, much of the focus on improving care for NAS has been on pharmacologically-based care models. Recent studies have illustrated the benefits of rooming-in and parental presence on NAS outcomes. Single center Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives demonstrate the benefits of non-pharmacologic care bundles and symptom prio

BACKGROUND: To describe amplitude-integrated encephalogram (aEEG) characteristics of neonates with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
METHODS: This is a prospective observational study. Newborns exposed to prenatal opioids and their gestational matched controls were included. A single-channel aEEG was obtained using Olympic 6000 CFM monitor. The background activity (continuous/discontinuous), the amplitudes (μV) and the presence of sleep-wake cycle (SWC) were documented.
RESULTS: A total of 59 infants, 23 with NAS and 36 controls were enrolled. All aEEG were completed within 48 hours of lif

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic in the United States has reached unprecedented proportions with far-reaching impacts on the most vulnerable population. The number of neonates born addicted to opioids has grown exponentially over the last several decades, leading to increased neonatal intensive care unit admissions and rising healthcare costs. Recent studies have yielded mixed results regarding which medication is most effective at relieving the symptoms of opioid withdrawal and reducing the weaning timeframe for babies with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
PURPOSE: To explore and compare t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In general populations, prenatal food insecurity negatively affects maternal and infant health. Our aim was to estimate and test the association between prenatal food insecurity and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) severity.
DESIGN/SETTING: Single-site prospective cohort design. Women receiving opioid agonist treatment with methadone or buprenorphine were interviewed (including demographics and food insecurity) during the third trimester at the combined obstetric/opioid use disorder treatment clinic at Boston Medical Center (BMC) in Boston, MA, USA, a large urban safety

BACKGROUND: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a postnatal drug withdrawal syndrome that can occur after intrauterine opioid exposure. Adverse neurobehavioral outcomes have been documented in infants with NAS; however, educational outcomes have not been thoroughly examined. We analyzed Tennessee data to understand the need for special educational services among infants who are born with NAS.
METHODS: By using Tennessee Medicaid and birth certificate data, infants who were born in Tennessee between 2008 and 2011 with a history of NAS were matched (1:3) to infants who were born during the sa

Parents of infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in the NICU may have questions about the long-term consequences of prenatal exposure to methadone, both asked and unasked. Although the signs of withdrawal will abate relatively quickly, parents should be aware of potential vision, motor, and behavioral/cognitive problems, as well as sleeping disturbances and ear infections so their infants can be followed closely and monitored by their pediatrician with appropriate referrals made. Furthermore, this knowledge may inspire parents to enroll their infants in an early intervention program

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) refers to a newborn neurological, gastrointestinal and/or respiratory disorder if a newborn was exposed to psychoactive substances in the intrauterine period. NAS is difficult to diagnose due to unreliability of the data on addictive substances use during pregnancy, limited possibilities of the prenatal exposure diagnosis and postnatal substance detection, which all lead to diagnostic dilemmas.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to indicate the problems in patients with early NAS diagnosis in the maternity ward and the importance of clinical

Forty years have elapsed since investigators first appreciated that tidal volumes measuring less than the physiologic dead space can produce reliable ventilation when delivered at high frequencies. Of all high frequency ventilation techniques, high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is the most well studied and is the most commonly utilized in clinical practice today. In HFOV, small volume oscillatory vibrations are superimposed on continuous distending pressure in a manner that allows efficient CO2 elimination during continuous alveolar recruitment. By preserving end-expiratory lung vol

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown an increased vulnerability among males to adverse outcomes during the postnatal period. Most children exposed to opioids and other medications in utero develop neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), yet individual predisposition for NAS is poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: This investigation examined the role of neonatal sex in the postnatal period for neonates exposed to standardized opioid maintenance treatment in utero with a focus on NAS regarding severity, medication requirements, and duration.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data collected in a p

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the use of opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) during pregnancy has been a topic of much debate among clinicians. A frequent consequence of such therapy is neonatal abstinence syndrome in the newborn infant. This study aimed to investigate whether follow-up of these neonates was in line with national recommendations.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: All maternity units in Norway were asked whether they treated neonates born to mothers in opioid maintenance treatment (OMT). 14 out of 42 maternity units treated these patients in collaboration with neonatal units, while 28 units

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is an escalating global health challenge driven by rising illicit drug use during pregnancy, a condition that remains underreported due to the non-specificity of symptoms and limited access to toxicological testing. This case series explores the clinical complexities and systemic hurdles in managing NAS within a resource-limited setting.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reviewed 23 neonates clinically diagnosed with NAS at two level III neonatal care centres in Sri Lanka over 18 months. A majority of mothers were aged below 25 years (70%), 86.9% disclosed

Breastfeeding offers many benefits to both mother and baby. Breastfeeding is generally recommended for mothers of infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) unless some associated risk outweighs the benefits. Evidence indicates that infants with NAS who receive human milk require less pharmacologic treatment and have shorter hospital lengths of stay. Perhaps the greatest barrier to breastfeeding for women with opioid dependence is the inaccurate and inconsistent information they receive from different sources, including health care professionals. The American Congress of Obstetricians and
