Perceived Health Risks Among Firefighters; The New Jersey Firefighter Health Survey.

OBJECTIVE: There is a growing literature on the risk of chronic disease among firefighters, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. However there is little information on firefighter's perception thereof. METHODS: Firefighters attending a union convention in New Jersey completed a survey with four domains: firefighting experience; perceived additional risk for chronic diseases (six-point Likert scale); cancer screening history; demographics, and risk behaviors. RESULTS: Among 167 enrolled firefighters, all were men and 86.6% active career. Median perceived risk ranged from high ri

Work-Related Unintentional Injuries Associated With Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the occurrence of work-related injuries after Hurricane Sandy potentially related to response and recovery. METHODS: Emergency and hospital discharges (patients aged 18-65 years) with a diagnosis of unintentional injury were obtained from the New Jersey Department of Health. Work-related injuries were identified as those with a workers' compensation payer or other work-related codes. Counties were categorized as high-, medium-, or low-impact areas. Poisson regression analysis was used to compare the rate of work-related injury the year following Sandy landfall

Urinary mycoestrogens, body size and breast development in New Jersey girls.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive research and interest in endocrine disruptors, there are essentially no epidemiologic studies of estrogenic mycotoxins, such as zeranol and zearalenone (ZEA). ZEA mycoestrogens are present in grains and other plant foods through fungal contamination, and in animal products (e.g., meat, eggs, dairy products) through deliberate introduction of zeranol into livestock to enhance meat production, or by indirect contamination of animals through consumption of contaminated feedstuff. Zeranol is banned for use in animal husbandry in the European Union and other countries,

Experimental infection of Didelphis marsupialis with vesicular stomatitis New Jersey virus.

Although vesicular stomatitis has been present for many years in the Americas, many aspects of its natural history remain undefined. In this study, we challenged five adult Virginia opossums (Didelphis marsupialis) with vesicular stomatitis New Jersey serotype virus (VSNJV). Opossums had no detectable antibodies against VSNJV prior to being inoculated with 10(6.5) median tissue culture infective doses (TCID(50)) of VSNJV by two routes; intraepithelial/subepithelial (IE/SE) inoculation and scarification in the muzzle (SM). Clinical response was monitored daily and animals were tested for viral

Rabies in a dog imported from Iraq--New Jersey, June 2008.

Rabies vaccination and stray dog control have led to successful control of canine rabies in the United States. The number of rabid dogs reported decreased from approximately 5,000 in 1950 to 79 in 2006, when the canine rabies virus variant associated with dog-to-dog rabies transmission was declared eliminated in the United States. On June 18, 2008, a mixed-breed dog, recently shipped from Iraq into the United States, was confirmed to have rabies by the Public Health and Environmental Laboratories of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. A total of 24 additional animals in th

Meteorological effects on adult mosquito (Culex) populations in metropolitan New Jersey.

For two metropolitan New Jersey counties, monthly average adult mosquito (Culex) catch from New Jersey light trap data sets covering multiple decades is related to a number of meteorological factors. From June through August climatological conditions accounted for between 40% and 50% of the variation in average catch. In general, high monthly precipitation totals both in the month corresponding to the catch and the previous month were associated with increased trap catch. However, individual heavy rainfall events tended to reduce catch. Warm temperatures exerted a positive influence on mosquit

New Jersey high school students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding AIDS.

In 1988 a questionnaire was administered to 1,793 urban and suburban New Jersey high school students to survey their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to the acquisition of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Knowledge about the disease was high, but exaggeration of risk from social contacts was common. Although fear was associated with misperceptions, it was not always dispelled by knowledge. Nearly half (49%) of all participants reported having used condoms, indicating that condom use is somewhat familiar and acceptable to them. Over 80% thought that condoms offer some protec

Genetic diversity of enzootic isolates of vesicular stomatitis virus New Jersey.

The RNA genomes of 43 vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) isolates of the New Jersey (NJ) serotype were T1-ribonuclease fingerprinted to compare the extent of genetic diversity of virus from regions of epizootic and enzootic disease activity. Forty of these viruses were obtained from Central America during 1982 to 1985. The other three were older isolates, including a 1970 isolate from Culex nigripalpus mosquitos in Guatemala, a 1960 bovine isolate from Panama, and a 1976 isolate from mosquitos (Mansonia indubitans) in Ecuador. The data indicate that extensive genetic diversity exists among virus

Adult Measles Outbreak in New Jersey: The Dangers of Declining Vaccination Rates.

This case highlights a rare presentation of measles in an unvaccinated adult male in New Jersey, emphasizing the risks posed by declining vaccination rates. The outbreak linked to this case illustrates the public health dangers of vaccine hesitancy and insufficient immunization coverage. A 32-year-old male presented with five days of worsening fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and a spreading maculopapular rash. Physical examination revealed petechial lesions on the soft palate, a lacy-patterned rash, and tachycardia. Laboratory findings included thrombocytopenia, electrolyte imbalances, hype

Analysis of Maternal and Congenital Syphilis Rates at a New Jersey University Hospital.

Syphilis and congenital syphilis (CS) cases have been rising in the U.S. and internationally since the 2000s. Social factors have been shown to increase the risk of CS transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to increased syphilis transmission. We aimed to quantify the rise in congenital syphilis (CS) rates at a large urban hospital and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CS rates. We completed a retrospective chart review of 61 pregnant women with a positive test or previous diagnosis of syphilis at an urban academic hospital between 1 January 2016 and 1 June 2022. Maternal

Predictors of enacted, internal, and anticipated stigma among PLHIV in New Jersey.

This article describes findings from the first statewide implementation of the People Living with HIV (PLHIV) Stigma Index in the United States. The goals of the study were to identify sources of stigma and contributing factors as a means of developing stigma-reduction interventions in New Jersey. Based on a sample of 371 PLHIV, the study found high levels of internal and anticipated stigma, particularly feelings of self-blame, anger, low self-esteem, fear of gossip, and fear of lack of sexual intimacy. Forty-nine percent of participants stated that they had experienced gossip in the past year

New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome sharing repository: methods and sample description.

BACKGROUND: Tourette Syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by chronic motor and phonic tics. Affected individuals and their family members are at an increased risk for other neuropsychiatric conditions including obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. While there is consistent evidence that genetic factors play a significant etiologic role, no replicable susceptibility alleles have thus far been identified. DESCRIPTION: Here we discuss a sharing resource of clinical and genetic data, the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome Sharing Reposi

Linkage study of cancer risk among lead-exposed workers in New Jersey.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic studies have illustrated a possible association between occupational exposure to lead and cancer, specifically cancers of the kidney, lung, stomach, and nervous system. We performed a linkage between two New Jersey databases: the Adult Blood Lead Epidemiology and Surveillance System (ABLES) and the New Jersey State Cancer Registry (NJSCR) for 1985-2001 to ascertain the risk of cancer in lead-exposed workers and to evaluate the usefulness of this type of linkage. METHODS: A cohort of 3192 men from the ABLES database met the selection criteria before the linkage. AUTOM

Clinical findings of West Nile virus infection in hospitalized patients, New York and New Jersey, 2000.

Outbreaks of West Nile (WN) virus occurred in the New York metropolitan area in 1999 and 2000. Nineteen patients diagnosed with WN infection were hospitalized in New York and New Jersey in 2000 and were included in this review. Eleven patients had encephalitis or meningoencephalitis, and eight had meningitis alone. Ages of patients ranged from 36 to 87 years (median 63 years). Fever and neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms predominated. Severe muscle weakness on neurologic examination was found in three patients. Age was associated with disease severity. Hospitalized cases and deaths were
