Shifting Narratives in Media Coverage Across a Decade of Drug Discourse in the Philadelphia Inquirer: Qualitative Sentiment Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The media has immense power in shaping public narratives surrounding sensitive topics such as substance use. Its portrayals can unintentionally fuel harmful stereotypes and stigma, negatively impacting individuals struggling with addiction, influencing policy decisions, and hindering broader public health efforts. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how the regional newspaper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, covered events related to illicit drug use between 2013 and 2022, focusing on linguistic patterns and themes associated with specific types of substances. METHODS: We collected

The Needle and the Damage Done: Framing the Heroin Epidemic in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

This case study focuses on the Cincinnati Enquirer's coverage of the heroin epidemic. The Enquirer started the first heroin beat in January 2016, and it could serve as a model for other news organizations. Reporters used combinations of episodic, thematic, public health, and crime and law enforcement frames in their coverage. These news frames are discussed in terms of how individualism-collectivism, geographic location, available resources, and social determinants inform journalistic and societal discussions of the heroin epidemic in terms of solutions instead of responsibility or blame.

Oil on the brain: dementia in the popular press prior to the 1906 Alzheimer case report.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Concepts of dementia precede the description published by Alzheimer. Historically, the term was misunderstood and misused by the published newspapers of the nineteenth century. We aimed to describe the historical use of the term dementia in New Zealand newspapers. METHOD: Papers Past is a project of the National Library of New Zealand that aims to digitise all New Zealand newspapers from 1839 onwards. There are 96,022,840 newspaper articles in this dataset. RESULTS: There were 1,521 newspaper articles between 1839 and 1906 in which the word dementia appeared in the conte

Peer-reviewed articles and public health: the mad cow affair in Italian newspapers.

CONTEXT: It has been suggested that early announcements of research works to be published in peer-reviewed journals may diminish newsworthiness of scientific articles, but this issue has not been widely studied. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact on the news media, in terms of volume and prominence of coverage, of a scientific article published in peer-reviewed journals about issues with relevance to public health compared with the impact of preliminary release of information on the same issue. DESIGN: Analysis of press coverage of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and bovine spongiform encephal

The effect of publicity on the reporting of toxic-shock syndrome in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) surveillance for toxic-shock syndrome (TSS) were compared; the distributions of CDC and Wisconsin cases in 1980 by calendar quarter of the initial onset were virtually identical. Among 131 cases in Wisconsin, 33 of 40 self-reported vs. 16 of 91 physician-reported cases were reported during the four-week period (September 18-October 15, 1980) following the CDC announcement of a higher relative risk of TSS among users of Rely tampons (Procter and Gamble, Cincinnati, Ohio) (P less than 0.001). Of cases with onsets during October 1, 1979-June 30,

An enquiry into scientific and media discourse in the MMR controversy: authority and factuality.

In this paper, we investigate two scientific articles at opposite ends of the MMR debate-Wakefield et al. (1998) (which started the debate) and Taylor et al. (1999)-and four media articles published to inform the public of the results of these two scientific studies. Because people need to assess truth claims about health risks, communicators seek to establish their believability in two ways: authority (i.e., the attribution of scientific claims to sources that may be perceived as believable because of their status) and factuality (i.e., the moderating, limiting, or highlighting of truth claim

Representations of mpox in UK news media during the 2022 outbreak: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The 2022 global mpox outbreak was the first to involve sustained community transmission outside endemic regions, disproportionately affecting gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). News media plays a critical role during outbreaks by disseminating information, shaping public perception and influencing health protection behaviours. This qualitative study examined how UK news media represented mpox during the 2022 outbreak, with a particular focus on public health messaging and the discursive framing of affected communities. METHODS: Using the NexisUK® database,

Phineas Gage, in his own time: A medical case reconstructed from newly unearthed nineteenth-century archives.

Phineas P. Gage's 1848 brain injury is a seminal case in the history of neuroscience, yet its nineteenth-century media coverage has remained largely unexplored. We adopted a novel methodological approach, systematically screening newly digitized newspaper archives (Newspapers.com™, Google News Archives, and Chronicling America) for articles published in the United States between 1848 and 1899, retrieving a total of 831 reports. Analysis revealed that most coverage (72.44%) occurred posthumously, questioning the relevance of later accounts and the prominence of Gage's case during his own lifeti

Post-tropical cyclone Fiona and Atlantic Canada: Media framing of hazard risk in the Anthropocene.

Post-tropical cyclone Fiona made landfall in Nova Scotia, Canada, in September 2022 with the force of a Category 2 hurricane. Using 'risk society' as an analytical framework, and Thomas A. Birkland's 'focusing event' concept, this paper seeks to understand how publics construct risk in the context of climate change and how institutions engage with those narratives. A qualitative content analysis of 439 newspaper articles from across Canada reveals that most media provide a superficial description of hazard impacts. When media are critical, they connect Fiona to climate change, other extreme ev

The impact that the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic had on news reporting in the state of Paraná, Brazil.

This study aims to analyze how influenza A (H1N1) in 2009 was reported in the state of Paraná. A total of 189 articles were analyzed in two newspapers from Paraná. Pursuant to analysis, four themes were identified: the spread of the virus; the pandemic and fear; influenza in the health service; and influenza in public policies. By studying how influenza A was reported in the media, it was possible to see the social impact that the H1N1 pandemic represented for society, presenting challenges for public institutions and ordinary citizens, who sensed that they were in a high-risk group exposed to

Media coverage and pandemic behavior: Evidence from Sweden.

We study the effect of media coverage on individual behavior during a public health crisis. For this purpose, we collect a unique dataset of 200,000 newspaper articles about the Covid-19 pandemic from Sweden-one of the few countries that did not impose lockdowns or curfews. We show that mentions of Covid-19 significantly lowered the number of visits to workplaces and retail and recreation areas, while increasing the duration of stays in residential locations. Using two different identification strategies, we show that these effects are causal. The impacts are largest when Covid-19 news stories

Challenging the myth of urban regeneration: raising the profile of problem gambling with a media campaign.

This paper is an examination of discourses challenging the myth of 'gambling' as a form of urban regeneration in Great Britain. The focus is primarily on the Daily Mail, which has continually waged a successful media campaign to "Kill the Casino Bill" and constructed a powerful public condemnation of gambling as regenerative. From an analysis of 156 gambling articles from January 2004 to December 2010 common and recurring themes emerged to dismiss gambling as a form of regeneration. These were gambling as immoral, criminal and pathological. These helped shaped discourses around which the debat

The portrayal of panic-buying and stockpiling in English newspapers during Covid, a mixed-method content analysis.

Panic-buying and stockpiling during Covid disrupted the supply chain, causing food shortages and impacting the vulnerable. The government faced criticism for its lack of food system resilience, poor communications planning, and reliance on retailers. The British media frequently reported on panic-buying during early lockdown stages in 2020 and throughout Covid. The media play an important role in communicating information to the British public during times of crisis and influence public opinion. This mixed-method study examined English media portrayal of panic-buying, analysing text and visual
