Associations of Non-Alcoholic Beverages with Major Depressive Disorder History and Depressive Symptoms Clusters in a Sample of Overweight Adults.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analysis of observational studies concluded that soft drinks may increase the risk of depression, while high consumption of coffee and tea may reduce the risk. Objectives were to explore the associations between the consumption of soft drinks, coffee or tea and: (1) a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) and (2) the severity of depressive symptoms clusters (mood, cognitive and somatic/vegetative symptoms). METHODS: Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis based on baseline and 12-month-follow-up data collected from four countries participating in the European MooDFOOD

Pathways and mechanisms linking dietary components to cardiometabolic disease: thinking beyond calories.

Calories from any food have the potential to increase risk for obesity and cardiometabolic disease because all calories can directly contribute to positive energy balance and fat gain. However, various dietary components or patterns may promote obesity and cardiometabolic disease by additional mechanisms that are not mediated solely by caloric content. Researchers explored this topic at the 2017 CrossFit Foundation Academic Conference 'Diet and Cardiometabolic Health - Beyond Calories', and this paper summarizes the presentations and follow-up discussions. Regarding the health effects of dieta

A 12-week randomized clinical trial investigating the potential for sucralose to affect glucose homeostasis.

The discovery of gut sweet taste receptors has led to speculations that non-nutritive sweeteners, including sucralose, may affect glucose control. A double-blind, parallel, randomized clinical trial, reported here and previously submitted to regulatory agencies, helps to clarify the role of sucralose in this regard. This was primarily an out-patient study, with 4-week screening, 12-week test, and 4-week follow-up phases. Normoglycemic male volunteers (47) consumed ∼333.3 mg encapsulated sucralose or placebo 3x/day at mealtimes. HbA1c, fasting glucose, insulin, and C-peptide were measured weekl

Consumer perception of sweeteners in yogurt.

Consumers are interested in products with reduced sugar, a trend which has been attributed to consumers associating high-sugar foods with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The objective of this study was to evaluate consumer perception of sugar reduction in yogurt-both conceptually and for liking of actual products. An online survey (n = 1,290) was conducted to evaluate consumer perception of sweeteners available in commercial yogurts. Participants who purchased yogurt at least once in the past 3 mo completed a series of exercises that involved demographics, agreement,

Stevia Rebaudiana: A Natural Sweetener with Therapeutic Potential.

INTRODUCTION: Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves are widely recognized for their role in producing a natural, plant-based sweetener. With increasing global concerns about sugar consumption and its impact on health, stevia has emerged as a promising alternative due to its intense sweetness and potential health benefits. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Stevia rebaudiana, with a primary focus on its pharmacological relevance and industrial applications, while also contextualizing consumer perception and market-driven demand for stevia as a healthier non-nutritive sweetener. The role of non-nutritive dietary constituents in carcinogenesis.

Very low levels of a large variety of non-nutritive chemicals occur in the diet. Among those that occur naturally are metabolites of molds (for example, mycotoxins) and bacteria (for example, nitrosamines) and natural constituents of plants (for example, pyrrolizidine alkaloids). Many of these are occasional contaminants, whereas others are normal components of relatively common foods. Some compounds (for example, aflatoxin, nitrosamines, and hydrazones) have been found to be carcinogenic in laboratory animals and mutagenic in bacterial and other systems, thereby posing a potential risk to hum

Sweetened beverage intake across moderate intake range is not associated with pregnancy-related weight change or biomarkers of glycemic control.

While sweetened beverage intake is associated with weight and glycemic outcomes in the general population, relations during pregnancy are unclear. This prospective observational study tested the hypothesis that greater sweetened beverage intake would be associated with higher pregnancy-related weight change and glucose regulation biomarkers. The Pregnancy Eating Attributes Study recruited participants with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies ≤12 weeks gestation and no major chronic illness from 2 obstetrics clinics in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Healthcare System from Novem

Non-caloric sweetener effects on brain appetite regulation in individuals across varying body weights.

Sucralose, a widely used non-caloric sweetener, provides sweet taste without calories. Some studies suggest that non-caloric sweeteners stimulate appetite, possibly owing to the delivery of a sweet taste without the post-ingestive metabolic signals that normally communicate with the hypothalamus to suppress hunger. In a randomized crossover trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02945475 ), 75 young adults (healthy weight, overweight or with obesity) consumed a drink containing sucralose, sweetness-matched sucrose or water. We show that acute consumption of sucralose versus sucrose stimulate

Sucralose and the Gut-Immune Axis: Emerging Evidence Linking Dysbiosis, Barrier Alterations, and Implications for Colitis and Colorectal Cancer Immunotherapy.

Sucralose is one of the most widely used non-nutritive sweeteners and has long been considered metabolically inert and safe within established acceptable daily intake levels. However, emerging evidence suggests that chronic exposure to sucralose may alter gut microbial composition, epithelial barrier function, mucosal inflammation, and immune responses. This review examines current experimental and clinical evidence on the effects of sucralose on the gut-immune axis, with particular attention to its potential implications for colitis and colorectal cancer (CRC). Preclinical studies indicate th

Postingestive Modulation of Food Seeking Depends on Vagus-Mediated Dopamine Neuron Activity.

Postingestive nutrient sensing can induce food preferences. However, much less is known about the ability of postingestive signals to modulate food-seeking behaviors. Here we report a causal connection between postingestive sucrose sensing and vagus-mediated dopamine neuron activity in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), supporting food seeking. The activity of VTA dopamine neurons increases significantly after administration of intragastric sucrose, and deletion of the NMDA receptor in these neurons, which affects bursting and plasticity, abolishes lever pressing for postingestive sucrose deliv

Impact of monk fruit sweetener on liver architecture, oxidative stress, and enzyme markers in adult Wistar rats.

BACKGROUND: Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) such as monk fruit sweetener (MFS) are increasingly adopted as sugar alternatives due to their high sweetening potency and low caloric content. Despite their widespread use, the metabolic and hepatic safety profiles of these agents remain underexplored. This study investigates the effect of MFS on the liver histology and key biochemical markers; alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in adult male adult Wistar rats. METHODS: Twenty adult male Wistar rats were assigned into four groups (n=5/group).

Artificial sweeteners are related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Microbiota dysbiosis as a novel potential mechanism.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a systemic and wide-spread disease characterized by accumulation of excess fat in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. Artificial sweeteners (ASs) or sugar substitutes are food additives that provide a sweet taste, and are also known as low-calorie or non-calorie sweeteners. Recently people consume increasingly more ASs to reduce their calorie intake. Gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem where 1014 microorganisms play several roles in host nutrition, bone mineralization, immune system regulation, xenobiotics metabolism, proliferation

Long-term consequences of prenatal saccharin exposure: evidence of sex-specific molecular programing in the prefrontal cortex and behavior of adolescent rats.

INTRODUCTION: Certain events that occur in early life, such as changes in nutrition, can induce structural and functional modifications in brain development, leading to behavioral programing in the offspring. These effects depend on the timing, intensity, and duration of exposure, and may contribute to chronic disorders in adulthood. Artificial non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS), such as saccharin, have recently been proposed as potential developmental disruptors. Saccharin consumption during pregnancy is discouraged, as it can cross the placenta and accumulate in the fetus. METHODS: In this stud

Is there an "optimal" diet for prevention of inflammatory bowel disease?

Nutritional epidemiological studies have evolved from a focus of single nutrients to diet patterns to capture the protective role of healthy diets on chronic disease development. Similarly, in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a healthy diet may be protective against its development in individuals with genetic susceptibility, but the definitions of the optimal diet pattern deserve further exploration. Hence, this review article presents evidence, mainly from prospective cohort studies, for the role of diet quality based on adherence to dietary guidelines, traditional and modern diet patterns i
