Perturbation and nonlinear dynamic analyses of voices from patients with unilateral laryngeal paralysis.

This study used perturbation methods (eg, jitter and shimmer) and nonlinear dynamic methods (eg, phase space reconstruction and correlation dimension) to analyze sustained voices generated by normal subjects and patients with unilateral laryngeal paralysis. We found that normal and pathological voices had low-dimensional dynamic characteristics. For nearly periodic voices, jitter and shimmer values of pathological voices from patients with unilateral laryngeal paralysis were significantly different from normal voices. For nearly periodic and aperiodic voices, the correlation dimensions of path

Computational design and nonlinear dynamics of a recurrent network model of the primary visual cortex.

Recurrent interactions in the primary visual cortex make its output a complex nonlinear transform of its input. This transform serves preattentive visual segmentation, that is, autonomously processing visual inputs to give outputs that selectively emphasize certain features for segmentation. An analytical understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of the recurrent neural circuit is essential to harness its computational power. We derive requirements on the neural architecture, components, and connection weights of a biologically plausible model of the cortex such that region segmentation, figure-

A multi-directional mass-spring-damper model for simulating nonlinear breast dynamics during physical activity.

The biomechanics of breasts during dynamic activities exhibits complex nonlinear dynamics, which cannot be accurately captured by conventional one-dimensional models. To address this limitation, a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear mass-spring-damper (MSD) model was developed to simulate breast dynamics. The proposed model integrates 16 elastic springs, 16 dampers, and 9 mass blocks to replicate tissue property heterogeneity and multi-directional displacements. Model parameters, including stiffness and damping coefficients, were optimized via iterative calibration against motion capture data fro

Enormous Lifetime Variations and Anomalous Nonlinear Dynamics of Interlayer Excitons in Reconstructed MoSe2/WSe2 Heterostructures.

Atomic reconstruction in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures leads to mesoscopic domains with a uniform atomic registry, profoundly altering the local potential landscape. While interlayer excitons in these domains exhibit strong many-body interactions, the extent and impact of quantum confinement on their dynamics remains unclear. We reveal that quantum confinement persists in these flat, reconstructed regions. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy uncovers multiple, finely spaced (∼1 meV) interlayer exciton states and correlated emission with enormous lifetime var

Finding the rhythm: Humans exploit nonlinear intrinsic dynamics of compliant systems in periodic interaction tasks.

Activities like ball bouncing and trampoline jumping showcase the human ability to intuitively tune to system dynamics and excite motions that the system prefers intrinsically. This human sensitivity to resonance has been experimentally supported for interactions with simple linear systems but remains a challenge to validate in more complex scenarios where nonlinear dynamics cannot be predicted analytically. However, it has been found that many nonlinear systems exhibit periodic orbits similar to the eigenmodes of linear systems. These nonlinear normal modes (NNM) are computable with a recentl

Nonlinear analysis of fetal heart rate dynamics in fetuses compromised by asymptomatic partial placental abruption.

INTRODUCTION: We analyzed fetal heart rate (FHR) parameters, dynamics, and outcomes in pregnancies with asymptomatic partial placental abruption (PPA) compared with those in normal pregnancies. METHODS: We examined nonstress test (NST) data acquired from 2003 to 2012 at our institution. Normal pregnancies (N = 170) and PPA cases (N = 17) were matched for gestational age, fetal sex, and mean FHR. NSTs were performed at 33-42 weeks of gestation. FHR parameters obtained from the NST and perinatal outcomes were analyzed using linear methods. Nonlinear indices, including approximate entropy (ApEn)

Nonlinear dynamic genetic regulation identifies peripheral drivers of neurodegenerative disease progression.

The dynamic genetic regulation of gene expression during the progression of common neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) remains poorly characterized, obscuring the genetic architecture of longitudinal clinical traits. Here, we present 2sGen-GPS, a two-stage genetic Granger temporal causality framework designed to integrate genetic variants, intermediate longitudinal molecular traits, and disease progression phenotypes. In the discovery stage, we utilized multivariate polynomial temporal genetic association (MPTGA) analysis of peripheral blood to identify 774,533 time-dependent cis-eQTLs (11,936 e

Dynamical analysis of a heroin-cocaine epidemic model with nonlinear incidence and spatial heterogeneity.

In this paper, we investigated a new heroin-cocaine epidemic model which incorporates spatial heterogeneity and nonlinear incidence rate. The main project of this paper is to explore the threshold dynamics in terms of the basic reproduction number R0, which was defined by applying the next-generation operator. The threshold type results shown that if R0<1, then the drug-free steady state is globally asymptotically stable. If R0>1, then heroin-cocaine spread is uniformly persistent. Furthermore, the globally asymptotic stability of the drug-free steady state has been established for the critica

Nonlinear Dynamic Complexity and Sources of Resting-state EEG in Abstinent Heroin Addicts.

It has been reported that chronic heroin intake induces both structural and functional changes in human brain; however, few studies have investigated the carry-over adverse effects on brain after heroin withdrawal. In this paper, we examined the neurophysiological differences between the abstinent heroin addicts (AHAs) and healthy controls (HCs) using nonlinear dynamic analysis and source localization analysis in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data; 5 min resting EEG data from 20 AHAs and twenty age-, education-, and gender-matched HCs were recorded using 64 electrodes. Nonlinear dynamic analysis of oscillatory repetitive movements in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.

Uncertainty exists on whether Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) patients have similar degree of impairment during motor tasks. We investigated this problem by analyzing nonlinear dynamics of repetitive movements in 21 control subjects, 33 mild-moderate PD patients, and 18 ET patients. Accelerometer signals were recorded during finger tapping and unbounded forearm movements between two points, and processed with moving average filtering to generate a new signal consisting of the temporal distance between consecutive cycles. We calculated: mean interpeak interval (slowness), int

Chaotic and Stochastic Components in an Influenza Surveillance Series: Nonlinear Dynamics and Predictive Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Chaotic dynamics has been the subject of both theoretical and empirical research in epidemiology, with the most recent research strongly focusing on SARS-CoV-2. However, few empirical studies have been undertaken with respect to influenza, even though evidence of chaos has also been found in influenza surveillance data. Furthermore, empirical studies on chaos are focused on reconstructing hidden attractors in epidemiological time series to filter out noise; however, dynamical noise affecting chaotic dynamics can have relevant epidemiological features that are, in this way, left unr

Nonlinear fractional stochastic delay modeling and computational analysis of herpes simplex virus type II dynamics.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a widespread infection responsible for painful blisters and ulcers. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 519.5 million people aged 15-49 years (13.3%) worldwide are infected with herpes simplex virus type II (HSV-II), the primary cause of genital herpes. In this study, we develop a nonlinear stochastic fractional delay differential equation (SFDDE) model to describe the transmission dynamics of HSV-II in a human population. The population is divided into susceptible [Formula: see text], exposed [Formula: see text], asymptomatic [Formula: see t

Nonlinear modes coupling and chiral nonequilibrium dynamics in bosonic magnetic ladder under a harmonic trap.

The bosonic magnetic ladder, a universal and the simplest model to reproduce the coupled effects of orbital magnetic field and optical lattices, provides an ideal platform for studying spin-orbit coupling, quantum phase transition and chiral topological states of matter. Here, considering both the on-site and rungwise interactions, the ground-state and chiral nonequilibrium dynamics of the bosonic magnetic ladder under an external harmonic trap are studied analytically and numerically. The threshold for the ground-state transition from the zero momentum state to the plane wave state is obtaine

Nonlinear Dynamics of Thick Hybrid Composite Laminates Subjected to Low-Velocity Impact and Various Preloading.

The composite primary structures of railway vehicles endure not only mechanical loads including tension, compression, bending, and torsion, but also external impacts, such as by the crushed stone in ballast. In the present study, the low-velocity impact response of preloaded hybrid composite laminates with different thicknesses is examined using a finite element method based on a progressive damage model. The hybrid plate consists of carbon fiber-reinforced unidirectional and woven prepregs. The progressive damage model, based on the 3D Hashin model, is validated by experiments on hybrid lamin

Discrete Stepping and Nonlinear Ramping Dynamics Underlie Spiking Responses of LIP Neurons during Decision-Making.

Neurons in LIP exhibit ramping trial-averaged responses during decision-making. Recent work sparked debate over whether single-trial LIP spike trains are better described by discrete "stepping" or continuous "ramping" dynamics. We extended latent dynamical spike train models and used Bayesian model comparison to address this controversy. First, we incorporated non-Poisson spiking into both models and found that more neurons were better described by stepping than ramping, even when conditioned on evidence or choice. Second, we extended the ramping model to include a non-zero baseline and compre

Do the Nonlinear Dynamic Acoustic Measurements, Nonlinear Energy Difference Ratio and Spectrum Convergence Ratio, Correlate with Perceptual Evaluation of Esophageal Voice Speakers?

BACKGROUND: The acoustic assessment of phonation after total laryngectomy is challenged by signal aperiodicity which makes frequency-based acoustic measures less reliable. This is important for patients who use esophageal voice since voice samples mostly include type III (highly aperiodic) and 4 (chaotic) signals. As such, using non-linear measures, which are better suited for aperiodic phonation, may be useful to investigate the relationship between acoustic signal characteristics and perception of esophageal voice quality. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether nonlinear dynami

Nonlinear dynamics of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer integrating experimental data: A novel spatial modeling approach.

Oncology research has focused extensively on estrogen hormones and their function in breast cancer proliferation. Mathematical modeling is essential for the analysis and simulation of breast cancers. This research presents a novel approach to examine the therapeutic and inhibitory effects of hormone and estrogen therapies on the onset of breast cancer. Our proposed mathematical model comprises a nonlinear coupled system of partial differential equations, capturing intricate interactions among estrogen, cytotoxic T lymphocytes, dormant cancer cells, and active cancer cells. Nonlinear measures of heart period variability: decreased measures of symbolic dynamics in patients with panic disorder.

Time series of heart period are not linear and recent studies illustrated the importance of using nonlinear methods to quantify the complexity of these time series. We compared different techniques to quantify the nonlinear complexity of these time series in patients with panic disorder and normal controls and correlated these measures with spectral powers in different bands of interest. Twenty-four hour ECG was recorded in 23 normal controls and 29 patients with panic disorder by using Holter records. Time series of heart period were analyzed by using approximate entropies, slopes of 1/f scal
