Identification of Burkholderia pseudomallei Near-Neighbor Species in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Identification and characterization of near-neighbor species are critical to the development of robust molecular diagnostic tools for biothreat agents. One such agent, Burkholderia pseudomallei, a soil bacterium and the causative agent of melioidosis, is lacking in this area because of its genomic diversity and widespread geographic distribution. The Burkholderia genus contains over 60 species and occupies a large range of environments including soil, plants, rhizospheres, water, animals and humans. The identification of novel species in new locations necessitates the need to identify the true

Q fever cases in the Northern Territory of Australia from 1991 to 2006.

Q fever (infection with Coxiella burnetii) has been uncommon in Australia's Northern Territory, with no reported cases until 2002. Since then, twelve cases of Q fever have been reported, representing a much lower notification rate than in surrounding Australian states. Three cases were identified in Central Australia during 2006, prompting this review of clinical and epidemiological features of all notified Northern Territory cases. Three patients required Intensive Care admission, 1 died, 5 had moderately severe illness, 2 were treated as outpatients and 2 were excluded as unlikely Q fever ca

Scrub typhus in the Northern Territory: exceeding the boundaries of Litchfield National Park.

Scrub typhus is recognised as an important differential diagnosis of fever, rash and sepsis in patients with a history of travel to Litchfield National Park in the Top End of the Northern Territory. All confirmed scrub typhus cases to date from the Northern Territory have visited the Park, but the presence of similar rainforest pockets elsewhere in the Top End suggested further infectious locations might be identified with increased tourism. We report a case of serologically confirmed Orientia tsutsugamushi infection in a man who had not been within Litchfield Park, but had visited another dis

The 1990-1991 outbreak of melioidosis in the Northern Territory of Australia: clinical aspects.

From November 1990 to June 1991, 33 cases of acute melioidosis were diagnosed in tropical Northern Territory, Australia during an exceptionally wet monsoon. Eighteen (55%) were alcoholic, 16 (48%) diabetic and only 4 (12%, all survivors) had no risk factors. Twenty-seven (82%) were considered recent infection, with an incubation period of 3-21 days (mean 14) documented in eight cases with presumed cutaneous inoculation. Fourteen patients presented with pneumonia (4 septicemic) and of 11 others with septicemia 4 had genitourinary foci. Three of 4 with splenic abscesses required splenectomy. Thr

Improving Access to Cancer Treatment Services in Australia's Northern Territory-History and Progress.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia's most sparsely populated jurisdiction with the highest proportion of Aboriginal people. Providing cancer care to the NT's diverse population has significant challenges, particularly related to large distances, limited resources and cultural differences. This paper describes the developments to improve cancer treatment services, screening and end-of-life care in the NT over the past two decades, with a particular focus on what this means for the NT's Indigenous peoples. This overview of NT cancer services was collat

Crusted scabies; a 2-year prospective study from the Northern Territory of Australia.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is listed as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization. Crusted scabies affects vulnerable and immunosuppressed individuals and is highly contagious because of the enormous number of Sarcoptes scabiei mites present in the hyperkeratotic skin. Undiagnosed and untreated crusted scabies cases can result in outbreaks of scabies in residential facilities and can also undermine the success of scabies mass drug administration programs. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Crusted scabies became a formally notifiable disease in the Northern Territory of Australia in

An outbreak of Salmonella Muenchen after consuming sea turtle, Northern Territory, Australia, 2017.

An outbreak of Salmonella Muenchen gastroenteritis occurred in a remote coastal Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia. There were 22 people sick (attack rate 55%); 7 had laboratory confirmed S. Muenchen infection; 2 required medical evacuation and admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). We conducted a descriptive case series to investigate the outbreak. All cases ate meat from a single green turtle (Chelonia mydas). The animal's pre-death stress, improper butchering, insufficient cooking and the unsatisfactory storage of meat all likely contributed to the outbrea

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections in the Northern Territory of Australia 2017-2022.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections (BSIs) cause significant morbidity and mortality. In Australia's Northern Territory (NT), MRSA BSI prevalence is disproportionately high. Vancomycin remains standard therapy despite toxicity and complex monitoring requirements. AIM: To evaluate demographics, clinical management and outcomes of patients with MRSA BSI in the NT, with a focus on health inequities. METHODS: This multi-centre retrospective observational study analysed MRSA BSI episodes in hospitalised adults between 2017 and 2022 at the Royal Da

Australian Football League clinics promoting health, hygiene and trachoma elimination: the Northern Territory experience.

Australia is the only developed country to suffer trachoma and it is only found in remote Indigenous communities. In 2009, trachoma prevalence was 14%, but through screening, treatment and health promotion, rates had fallen to 4% in 2012. More work needs to be done to sustain these declining rates. In 2012, 25% of screened communities still had endemic trachoma and 8% had hyperendemic trachoma. In addition, only 58% of communities had reached clean face targets in children aged 5-9 years. Australian Football League (AFL) players are highly influential role models and the community love of foot

Meningitis and a febrile vomiting illness caused by echovirus type 4, Northern Territory, Australia.

In July 2007, a cluster of meningitis cases caused by an echovirus 4 strain was detected in 1 indigenous community in the Top End of the Northern Territory of Australia. Illness was characterized by fever, vomiting, and headache. Over the next 4 months, additional cases of meningitis and the fever and vomiting syndrome emerged in other indigenous communities and subsequently in the major urban center of Darwin. We describe the epidemiology of 95 laboratory-confirmed meningitis cases and conclude that the epidemic fever and vomiting syndrome was caused by the same enterovirus. Nucleotide sequen

Measuring the excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Northern Territory, Australia.

This study aims to assess whether there was any excess mortality among the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A time-series analysis using death data (1997-2023) was applied separately to the monthly and yearly death counts to develop an excess mortality surveillance model (using Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA)) for the NT population. Excess mortality was calculated by comparing expected deaths with actual deaths. In 2022, there was a statistically significant excess mortality of 193 (p < 0.01), c

Tobacco Smoking-Attributable Burden of Disease in the Adult Northern Territory Population, 2014-18.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is an important preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. Smoking rates are higher in the Northern Territory (NT) among Aboriginal peoples living in remote areas. Understanding smoking-attributable mortality and burden of disease in the NT population is important for building awareness and implementing targeted public health strategies. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the impact of tobacco smoking on mortality and morbidity in the NT Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations aged 30 years and above between 2014 and 2018. SETTING: NT, Australia. PARTICIPANTS:

Rapid chronic kidney disease progression in younger, First Nations patients in the Northern Territory.

This 6-year retrospective cohort study investigated the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among Australian First Nations patients in remote Northern Territory. We found that younger patients (age less than 50 years) were at a higher risk of progression to kidney replacement therapy or death compared to older adults. The results indicate a need to target early CKD intervention efforts to younger patients at risk of rapid progression.

Complete Mitochondrial Genome for Lucilia cuprina dorsalis (Diptera: Calliphoridae) from the Northern Territory, Australia.

The Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina dorsalis, is a major sheep ectoparasite causing subcutaneous myiasis (flystrike), which can lead to reduced livestock productivity and, in severe instances, death of the affected animals. It is also a primary colonizer of carrion, an efficient pollinator, and used in maggot debridement therapy and forensic investigations. In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of L. c. dorsalis from the Northern Territory (NT), Australia, where sheep are prohibited animals, unlike the rest of Australia. The mt genome is 15,943 bp in length,
