Overcoming barriers to the recruitment of nurses as participants in health care research.

Adequate participant recruitment is critical for the successful execution of research studies involving human subjects. Participant recruitment can be particularly challenging when the intended study participants are health care providers as opposed to patients. Discussions of the challenges and successful strategies associated with provider recruitment are limited, particularly regarding providers other than physicians and settings outside of primary care. Using a case study format, we present our experiences recruiting inpatient nurses into a study which involved focus group methodology at a

Violence against psychiatric nurses: sensitive research as science and intervention.

Psychiatric nurses are frequent victims of workplace violence, much of which is perpetrated by patients. In a review of literature on prevalence, perpetrators, and impact of violence on psychiatric nurses, we note that workplace violence is a virtually normative experience for the nurse, rather than a rare occurrence. Verbal violence and sexual harassment, like physical violence, are common experiences; in contrast to physical violence, these are often initiated by co-workers. The emotional impact of violence on psychiatric nurses is studied less often than frequency of exposure; we discuss hy

A review of research by nurses regarding tobacco dependence and mental health.

The prevalence of tobacco use and dependence among those with psychiatric and/or substance use disorders is exceptionally high, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this review is to discuss the findings conducted by nurses regarding smoking and mental health. A search of the available literature since 1950 resulted in a review of 17 studies authored or coauthored by nurses. Most study designs were descriptive with only one investigator reporting the results of a small clinical trial. In addition to documenting smoking patterns in this population, investigators f

The cognitive processes employed by undergraduate nursing OSCE assessors: A qualitative research study.

OBJECTIVES: The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is an assessment format commonly used to assess undergraduate nursing students. However, in spite of its prominence, relatively little research has been conducted into how OSCE assessors form judgements about student performances, and whether divergent processes of judgement formation have the potential to negatively impact the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of awarded scores. This qualitative study aimed to uncover the cognitive processes which assessors employ when assessing OSCE performances. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: In

[Patient classification systems. Nursing workload from the perspective of applied research (part I)].

This article describes in two parts the basic principles of categorising nursing data into Patient Classification Systems (PCS) and related findings of nursing research. PCS are used to group patients into classes by using some specified criteria or indicators, e.g. needs of a patient, functional status or different nursing activities. They are often applied to constitute staff requirements. Since the large number of available classification systems differs in terms of development procedures and use of resulting data, it was rarely possible to compare different PCS with each other until now. A New Situation-Specific Theoretical Framework to Guide Ectopic Pregnancy Research in Nursing.

Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a serious and increasing health concern that remains poorly understood despite identified risk factors. This article introduces the N-GEM Theoretical Framework, a novel approach that integrates genomic, epigenomic, environmental, and microbiome factors to address the complex and multifactorial etiology of EP. By offering a comprehensive and dynamic model, the N-GEM framework supports the development of personalized prevention strategies and can enhance early detection methods. This situation-specific theoretical framework not only positions nursing at the forefront of

Research Priorities in Correctional Nursing Practice: Results of a Three-Round Delphi Study.

Correctional nursing has been recognized as a specialty since 1985, but research to describe and support nursing practice in the criminal justice system has been sparse. The development of a research agenda can stimulate the research necessary to provide an evidence base for specialty practice development. A three-round Delphi study was undertaken to elicit a prioritized list of research topics to guide future research efforts for meaningful results. Six predominant themes emerged from an analysis of top research questions generated by a panel of 18 correctional nursing experts. Research prior
